Tweens are on the brink of the (sometimes terrible) teens. If not already, they’ll soon experience big changes in their brains, bodies, and skin. Skin can become oilier in the T-zone between the ages of 10-12, and those first, pesky pimples might pop up, too. It’s also a time when confidence tends to dip. Combined, this makes the tween years the perfect time to teach your tween a skincare routine.

“Taking control of their self-care for a tween is a crucial part of healthy personal development, and for girls, self-care is an important opportunity to create a connection of doing something good for their bodies,” explained Kimberly Grustas, Founder/Owner of Good For You Girls, a company focused on clean skincare products for girls. “Establishing a routine helps girls feel in control at a time that often feels a bit out of control for them. Sebum production starts at around age 9 so learning healthy habits washing their face will help keep excess oils and bacteria at bay. Girls especially need to take ownership of their bodies as tweens before the start of their menstruation.”

Teach your tween a skincare routine by following four easy guidelines.

Keep it simple.

Don’t overwhelm your tween with a complicated routine. Instead, keep it simple with three steps: cleanse, tone, and moisturize

Keep it gentle.

Choose gentle, clean products that keep the skin hydrated. Avoid exfoliating and abrasive scrubs.

Stick to three steps.

Step 1: Cleanse

Wash twice a day, morning and night, to improve skin health and unclog pores. Choose a gentle, clean cleanser with a light lather. No need for a washcloth, which can irritate skin: splash face with lukewarm water and use fingertips to apply cleanser. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel.

Step 2: Tone

80’s moms might remember alcohol-based, astringent toners that left skin a dry mess. Today’s toners are supplements, giving skin extra nutrients and providing balance. Choose a gentle spray toner that adds an extra touch of moisture.

Step 3: Moisturize

Teach your tween the importance of SPF, and choose a moisturizer that also provides protection against harmful UV rays. The Extras: Makeup, Exfoliation & Acne

Keep the focus on skin health and self care.

Healthy skin is beautiful skin, and maintaining a glowing complexion goes beyond a skincare routine. Teach your tween that drinking plenty of water and maintaining healthy sleep and eating habits are the keys to caring for the human body’s largest organ, your skin.
