If you’ve been spending any amount of time at the beach this summer, you might have noticed that your hair needs a little bit of TLC. Sun, wind, and salt water can all be harsh on your hair and your traditional shampoo and conditioner routine just aren’t enough to rehydrate tresses during the summer time. We’ve gathered a few simple ways to add moisture and shine back into your damaged hair.

One of the simplest ways to rehydrate hair is to take a tablespoon of coconut oil or olive oil and work it through dry hair. You can use your fingers if your hair is short and fine. Or, if you have longer hair, you may need to use a comb and work it through each section at a time. Don’t use too much or it may be difficult to wash out. Start slowly and work your way up if you are not sure.

If you have the time, a hot oil treatment is a wonderful way to relax and pamper yourself while returning moisture to your hair. Find a treatment at your local store or heat one or two tablespoons of coconut or argan oil (depending on how long your hair is). Work it through your hair thoroughly and cover your hair with a plastic shower cap. Wait about 20 minutes before removing the shower cap. Wash your hair as you normally would. To help hydrate your hair even more, sit out in the sun while the shower cap is on. The heat will help the moisture work deep into each strand of hair.

If your hair is brittle, you may want to try an avocado hair mask. This one is very easy to make. Just peel and mash a fresh avocado until it’s completely smooth and then apply it to your damp hair (not wet hair). For a healthy boost, you can also add a tablespoon of raw honey to the mixture. Let it sit in your hair for 30 to 60 minutes under a plastic shower cap before washing it out in the shower. Be sure to get the mixture completely out of your hair. Your hair should feel soft and hydrated when it’s dry.

One of the most important things that you can do to take care of your hair is to use a conditioner each time it’s exposed to salt air or chlorine from the pool. By keeping on top of this, your hair won’t become as dry and damaged.
