We have talked about how to make our mac & cheese and biscuits, but did you know you can easily make your own granola bars as well? Making your own granola bars from scratch is actually very simple and will even save you some money. Wouldn’t it be great to know exactly what is going into your food? When you make your granola bars from scratch there are no hidden filler ingredients or preservatives. You will know exactly what is going in your mouth when you bite into these yummy treats.
Here are a couple of my favorite homemade granola bar recipes.
Chewy Chocolate Chip Bars
These bars are very comparable to the Quaker Chewy Granola bars in chocolate chip.
- 4 1/2 cups rolled oats
- 1 cup all-purpose unbleached flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2/3 cup butter, softened
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
This is a very easy one to make. Simply add all the ingredients into the bowl and mix. No need to worry about the order just dump and stir. Grease a 9 x 13 pan and then gently press the mixture into pan.
Bake at 325 degrees for 20 minutes. Once the granola is cooked you will want to let it cool for 10-15 minutes before cutting into bars.
Nutty Fruit Bars
This recipe is a little more involved, but definitely worth the effort.
- 2½ cups rolled oats
- 1 cup shredded coconut
- 1/2 cup raw sunflower seeds
- 1/2 cup wheat germ
- 1/2 cup slivered or crushed walnuts
- 1 cup dried fruit (or raisins)
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup honey
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Spread the rolled oats, coconut, sunflower seeds, wheat germ, and walnuts on a baking sheet. Bake for approximately 20 minutes. Stir mixture every 5-10 minutes. After 20 minutes remove from oven and stir in dried fruit. Move the oat mixture to a greased 8 x 8 baking dish.
While items are baking, melt butter, honey, and brown sugar in a small pan. Simmer for 20 minutes then add vanilla extract. Pour the hot mixture over the oat mixture in the 8 x 8 pan. Stir until all of the oat mixture is covered. Press firmly into the bottom of the baking dish. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool for 15 minutes then cut into bars.
