Many of us are so used to using pre-packaged foods that we forget how simple it can be to make some of these items from scratch. I have been guilty in the past of reaching for the little round tubes of pre-made biscuit dough, but why? Is it easier? Is it cheaper? The answer is no on both accounts. Making your own biscuits from scratch is actually incredibly simple, fast, and very inexpensive. In fact, you can make organic biscuits for about the same price per serving as you would conventional pre-packaged biscuit dough.

Here are a couple of my favorite homemade biscuit recipes.

Super Simple Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups unbleached flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 4 tablespoons butter (softened)
  • ¾ cup milk
  • Dash of salt (about ½ teaspoon)

Mix dry ingredients together then use hands to rub butter into the dry mixture. Add the milk gradually stirring until dough has formed. Knead dough for approximately 2 minutes then roll out. You can either drop about 2 large spoons full of dough onto a baking sheet or you can use a round cookie cutter (or top of a small drinking glass) to form “perfect” circles.

Bake at 400 degrees for 12-14 minutes.

Tea Biscuits

Use above recipe for “super simple biscuits” but roll the dough out thin and use a small circle shaped cookie cutter (or the top of a glass baby food jar) to cut the dough into small circles. Bake at 400 degrees for 12 minutes. You will now have mini tea biscuits that are perfect served with a little bit of jam or butter. These make a great tea party addition.

Honey Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups unbleached flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ cup plus 1 tablespoon butter (softened)
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • Dash of salt (about ½ teaspoon)

Mix dry ingredients thoroughly. Add in butter with hands until dough is slightly crumbly. Now mix in milk and honey. Stir until dough has formed. Knead for approximately 2 minutes. Roll out to about ½ inch thick. Cut into small circles with round cookie cutter, biscuit cutter, or top of a glass. Cook at 450 degrees for 10 minutes.

Easy Cheddar Biscuits

I love cheddar biscuits and make these a lot at our house. They are always a hit and taste very similar to Red Lobster’s cheddar biscuits.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup self-rising flour
    • Don’t have self-rising flour? Put 1 tablespoon of baking powder in the bottom of a 1 cup measuring cup then fill with regular unbleached flour.
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½-1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise.

Mix the flour and milk until runny dough has formed. Now add in the mayonnaise and stir. Once the mayonnaise has been stirred into dough add in the cheese. The dough will be very thick. Fill muffin trays with 2 large spoons full of dough. Cook at 425 degrees for 14 minutes.

Still not fast enough for you? You can mix the dry ingredients and have pre-made biscuit mix ready for use at home. Just double, triple, or quadruple the dry ingredients of any of these recipes and store in an airtight container until you are ready to make your biscuits. Then simply add in the “wet” ingredients for even faster biscuits made from scratch.
