It’s time to check your list and start your Christmas shopping if you haven’t already. While you probably won’t forget a gift for the kids or your significant other, what do you do about gifts for unexpected visitors?

I don’t know about you, but it never fails that someone unexpected stops by with a gift for me or one of my children. And, I always feel as though I’m obligated to have something to give in return. So what do you do if your personal trainer, your pet sitter, or your next-door neighbor stops by with a gift?

You can always keep a generic set of candles, a gift basket of bath and body products, or an address book and journal handy. But, sometimes it’s nice to have a few unique gifts that they might not already have at home. Of course, you will probably want different types of gifts on hand in case the recipient is a child, teen, man, or woman.

Kids might enjoy a board game or card game along with a box of microwave popcorn. Or, for the artistic child, why not gift them a box of cookie cutters and a container of play dough? Teenagers might enjoy a box of the latest nail polish colors or a new set of makeup brushes. Or, a new pair of earbuds and a $5 gift card for music will work as well.

If you plan on having a few gifts for unexpected adult visitors, you could consider a variety of different types of gifts. Someone who loves to cook might enjoy a gift box of Himalayan salt or a selection of hot sauce. A few bags of high-quality coffee and a mug make a wonderful gift for almost anyone. Or consider a small box of succulents and a book on growing them.

There are lots of different unique gifts that you can consider keeping on hand during the holidays. But, don’t feel that they all need to be purchased. If you’re a crafty type of person, why not make up a few jars of your homemade jam? Perhaps make a jar of bath salts with some dried rose petals from your garden.

Of course, there is no rule that you have to reciprocate when you’re given an unexpected gift. You can simply accept the gift and thank them for their thoughtfulness. Or, you can respond and suggest that you both go out to lunch together or for coffee soon after the holidays. Either way, plan now for those unexpected guests.
