Many people dream of heading to California for some surf and sun during summer break. Or perhaps they want to visit New York City for a tour of all the Broadway shows. Perhaps even a jaunt to Florida to visit the theme parks. But what about the lesser-traveled states? We’re starting a new feature where we’ll be showcasing some of the other states in the United States.

First up … the 37th state.  Don’t know which that is?  How about a few hints:

  1. This state is ranked 37th in population.
  2. It’s located in the midwest, on the Great Plains.
  3. This state is a major producer of beef, pork corn and soybeans.
  4. It is bordered by South Dakota to the north and Kansas to the south.
  5. Still don’t know?  This hint may give it away – It’s capital is Lincoln.

You guessed it – Nebraska!  Nebraska may not be the first state to come to mind when thinking of vacations, but there are many things to see and experience.

Swim and Splash

Family fun abounds in Beatrice at the Beatrice Big Blue Water Park.   There’s more to do than just swim – there are volleyball courts, a bathhouse, a 9,000 square foot zero-depth pool, a youth pool complete with bubbler and toys, a couple of diving boards, a 124-foot loop water slide and an 8-foot wide river slide.  Pack your swimsuit and sunscreen, and enjoy a great day in the water.

Kick up Your Cowboy Boots

If cowboys and horses are your thing, you’re in luck!  In Ogallala you can visit the Front Street and Cowboy Museum. There’s a western stage show during the summer months, a museum, gift shop, steakhouse and a saloon.  Enjoy the day the 1880’s way.

A dude ranch is the perfect place to start a new family tradition. The 1+1 Ranch invites you to experience the old west & life as a Cowboy on a Real Working Ranch. Guests can participate in all ranch activities and can spend up to six hours a day in the saddle.

Travel Like Lewis & Clark

A road tour is the perfect way to experience Nebraska. Exploring Lewis & Clark follows the path these historical explorers traveled back in the early 1800s.  The tour starts on the Winnebago Indian Reservation, in Winnebago, where you can explore everything things such as tribal art and culture.  Along this tour are farmers markets, herds of bison, and the Kreycik Riverview Elk Ranch, located in Niobrara.  This is a working ranch, and you’ll get to ride in a covered wagon right through herds of bison, elk and fallow deer, and even better, you’ll have the chance to hand-feed the bison.  The tours range from 2 to 2 1/2 hours.

Another stop on the trail is the Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park.  At one point millions of years ago, The Great Plains we covered by a huge volcanic eruption, resulting in the deaths of a huge multitude of animals such as camels, horses and prehistoric animals.  This fossil bed has been uncovered, and the fossils are there for public viewing.  This park boasts a visitor’s center, trails and exhibits.

As you travel this historic trail, there are many other places to visit ranging from hotels, to vineyards and a doll museum.

Nebraska is filled with family activities. Do you have any to share? See you next month as we travel to another state!
