Let It Snow: 4 Snow-Inspired Recipes
February 25, 2013
Many families from the north are probably sick of looking at all the snow. However, here in Oklahoma, we are getting our first real snow of the season. As a child, snow ice cream was a must anytime that the weather turned frigid. But now there are more unique recipes that use the icy slush. So – whether you are dreaming of the greener days ahead or relishing in the newly white landscape – take a break for a snow-inspired recipe.
Traditional Snow Ice Cream
As a child, snow ice cream was one of the first things I thought of when I woke to a ground covered in freshly fallen powder. This is a traditional that uses fresh snow to make a tasty vanilla treat.
Ingredients:
- About a gallon of snow
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
- It’s simple. Just mix and serve. Depending on the consistency that you would like, you can reduce the amount of milk used in the recipe.
Trick for securing clean snow: Place a bowl outside so that snow collects in the clean bowl as it falls.
Variations:
Leave it to Paula Deen to come up with a snow ice cream recipe that uses condensed milk. If you want a snow ice cream with a little twist, check out her condensed milk snow ice cream recipe here.
Maple Snow Taffy
I found a unique maple snow taffy that is very simple to make. It only requires snow, maple syrup, and salted butter. Mix the butter and maple syrup together to make a maple-butter decadent syrup, then pour it over the snow to harden it into a taffy like maple delight. Check out the recipe here and enjoy.
Snow Cones
As the name suggests, snow cones are perfect when made with real snow. Use any of your favorite snow cone recipes and replace the shaved ice in the recipe with snow. Here are three of my favorite recipes:
- Mango Strawberry Snow Cone by Tyler Florence
- Raspberry-Blueberry Snow Cone from Epicurious
- Snow cones for the adults. Beer Snow Cones from Betty Crocker.
Snow Infused Adult Beverages
From margaritas to daiquiris, many adult beverages require shaved ice. Instead of using shaved ice, replace the ice with snow. If you are sick of the snow you can make a margarita and pretend you are lounging on the beach.
These are just a few of my favorite ways to use the freshly fallen snow in some tasty recipes. What is your favorite snow-based recipe? Are you ready for greener days, or still enjoying the snow?
