When I was a little girl, my mother used to spend an entire week each spring deep cleaning every room and every corner of our house. As much as I admire the way the house looked after all her work, I don’t have time to deep clean my own house. These quick spring cleaning tips will help you freshen your home without requiring a week of work.

Clean the Windows

Cleaning your windows will really brighten your home. When windows are dirty, they filter out the sunlight and make your home look dingy. I use a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water with a drop of lemon or orange essential oil. Just spray on the windows and wipe off.

Declutter It

Nothing makes your home look messier than piles of clutter on every surface. If you aren’t in the habit of decluttering, begin with areas that people see when they visit: the kitchen, living room, entertainment area, and dining room. Eliminate piles of magazines, old junk mail, dusty artificial flowers, wicker baskets that haven’t been emptied in months, etc. Don’t just put things in a box or a closet and forget about them. Deal with them now.

Walls & Woodwork

Take a look at your walls and woodwork. Are fingerprints and smudges making your wood trim look dirty? Use a soft cloth dipped in the same cleaning solution you used for your windows and clean your walls and woodwork. Focus on light switches, doorways, and other high traffic areas.

Vacuum Everywhere

While you may not have time to move every piece of heavy furniture in your home, you can at least move the smaller pieces and anything else that’s on the floor. To freshen your carpets, sprinkle baking soda lightly on the fabric, allow it to sit for an hour, and then vacuum. You can add a few drops of lavender or rose essential oil to the baking powder if you want to freshen the air at the same time.

Light Fixtures

Are your light fixtures filled with dead bugs and dust? If so, it’s time to clean them. Carefully take them down, empty them out, and then wipe them carefully using a soft cloth. Now is the perfect time to replace any dead bulbs. If any of your lamp shades are too dirty to get completely clean,  consider replacing them. You’ll be surprised at what a significant impact this will make.
