Most new homes boast large walk-in closets, but there are still many houses and apartments that have little closet space. Big or small, there is always something you can do to organize the clutter that winds up in closets of all sizes. Four ways to get your closet into better shape:
Pegboard
This is the simplest way to make room for small items. Hang a pegboard on a blank wall or on the back of the closet door. Using different size pegs, you can hang scarfs, purses, hats, ties, and even jewelry. Hang matching scarfs and purses together. Or a necklace and bracelet. Everything will be right there at your fingertips next time you it.

Extra Rod
There are many different ways to install an extra clothing rod in your closet. The biggest problem will be if your current rod is not high enough to allow for an extra rod (this won’t be an issue in a kid’s closet with smaller clothing). If you have time and are handy with a drill and a saw, you can install a permanent rod by using a wooden dowel and wall brackets.
The easiest solution is to buy a double hang closet rod. You can get one at your local hardware store for under $10. This horizontal rod comes put together with two vertical rods on the sides and hooks to hang over your existing rod. You’ve just doubled your closet space.
Shelves
Most closets only have one shelf right above the clothing rod, and it’s easy for the clothing you stack there to devolve into a jumble. Consider installing a second, higher shelf to hold those items you seldom use. At the very least, purchase stackable bins to organize and hold more items.
Make Use of Every Inch
If you have enough rod space, get some hanging canvas shelves. They’re great for storing sweaters, jeans, and bulkier items. Shoe bins are perfect for keeping shoes in pairs and off the floor. Use wire baskets, plastic containers, or bins to organize clothes, shoes, bags, and handbags.
Make your closet a happy space. Add some pops of color with paint or bright clothing bins. Color coordinate your clothes so you can find items easily. And don’t forget—if you haven’t worn something in the past year, it’s time to toss it!
