How to Stay Safe in the Summer Sun
May 16, 2017
As temperatures grow warmer, most of us spend more time out-of-doors. There are trips to the beach or the pool with our kids. We plan vacations to enjoy national parks or to visit an amusement park. We work in the garden, enjoy barbecues with friends, and go to the park for a picnic and a walk on a summer afternoon. Enjoy the fine weather—but don’t forget these sun-safety tips.
Wear Sunscreen
It’s important to apply sunscreen whenever you go out of doors. It doesn’t take long for sun to damage the skin. Often missed places include feet, the back of the leg, and the back of the neck. Don’t forget to re-apply sunscreen if you are out of doors for any length of time.
Remember Your Face
Some people avoid applying sunscreen to the face because they’re already wearing make-up, but today many foundations and face moisturizers include sunscreen. Check labels and find a product you like, then use it every day.
Wear a Hat
Wearing a hat serves several purposes when it comes to sun protection. It’s tough to apply sunscreen to your head, so a hat will help protect your scalp; it will also prevent your hair from sun damage. If your hat has a broad brim, it will also protect your nose and face from being burn. Look for a hat with neck coverage for maximum protection.
Protect Your Feet
Everyone loves to wiggle their toes in the sand, but if the temperature is high, wear sandals to protect the soles of your feet.
Drink Extra Water
It’s easy to become dehydrated when you’re out in the sun all day. Bring along a reusable water bottle and keep it filled with water. If the temperature is very high, fill half the bottle with ice cubes and the other half with water. As the ice melts, your water will stay cool.
Eliminate Scented Products
I love scented products, but I don’t wear them when I’m outside. Scents can attract bugs like bees, wasps, and mosquitoes. You don’t want to become a magnet for every flying pest in the area when you’re outside. Instead, choose unscented soaps, shampoos, and body lotions.
