20 Best Cameras For Night Sky Photography (2022 Updated)

Note: I was given this camera to use for a few weeks prior to its release. Executive Summary I’m astonished that this relatively inexpensive camera has the same autofocus system found on Canon’s top of the line mirrorless cameras costing between five and six thousand dollars.

This inclusion means that the chance of getting not just keeper images, but superb ones is much better than systems lacking such an advanced system. There’s nothing to be done for an out of focus image.

This camera will, if the user does their part, reduce these to a bare minimum. You can set the autofocus to track people, animals or vehicles for example. If set for animals, the autofocus is fast enough to track the eye of a bird in flight.

The accuracy and speed of this camera have to be experienced to be appreciated. Description This is a very light, small and handy camera. Please see the images posted with this review. I’ve put the R10 next to first a Canon DSLR – the 5D2 with a 50mm f/1.

4 lens. The difference in size is enormous. The difference in weight is even more so. The other comparison is the R10 next to a Leica Q2M. The Leica is known for being a lightweight easy to handle camera.

The Q2M is actually larger if not as thick. The large hand grip makes a sure hold easy. Set to mechanical shutter, the noise is so low that it’s not audible if the camera’s outside. Setting to electronic shutter makes it utterly silent.

The quiet shutter means you can operate in stealth mode for street or other candid photography. Being mirrorless, there is no shutter jitter at all. I’ll include some very casual images I shot including a close up of a crepe myrtle bloom.

Each of the images is a 100% crop just as it came out of the camera. All have acceptable quality considering they were all done using the supplied kit lens. I don’t have the EF-RF adapter yet so can’t try, in time for this review, any of the higher quality lenses I have access to.

While these images are all right, there’s no doubt that this camera will do better if equipped with higher quality lenses. I could go on for pages about how enjoyable using this camera is, but I’m limited to space so I’ll cut to the good and not so good.

Good and Not So Good The video works well but will not output in any of the video raw formats making the R10 less than ideal for making graded videos. Don’t get me wrong. These videos can be graded but lack the dynamic range of the flatter, raw, output.

There is no headphone jack for monitoring the sound level of videos – a surprising lack. This means sound will have to be leveled in the edit stage. The rated fps burst mode seems accurate in my testing but the buffer fills up quickly.

As an apparent compensation, the system can be set up to run at half cock so when you press the shutter you get not only the image at the shutter press but a half second before because the shutter press will make the whole series record onto the chip.

This means if you are a bit slow on the shutter, you will still ‘get the shot as it happened’. I didn’t expect such sophisticated systems on an entry level prosumer camera. The small body means low weight and an unobtrusive camera overall but it also means that, coupled with the full size RF mount, thicker lenses such as fast RFor EF lenses will leave little space between themselves and the handgrip.

The supplied 18-45mm kit lens is all right for utility but it won’t deliver satisfaction if you wish more reach, a faster lens for lower light and/or higher quality images. Then again, the kit lens can’t be beaten for low weight.

It also means that, unlike heavy, ungainly DSLRs, I’ll be much more likely to take this camera with me than dealing with a relatively huge DSLR. I can fix a good deal of error in post but I can’t fix an image I missed because I didn’t want to lug a huge, heavy camera with me.

The kit lens uses Canon’s STM technology meaning it is ideal for video. This camera will also use other Canon STM lenses such as the ‘pancake’ ones which offer compactness in accordance with the handiness of this camera.

Conclusion I’ve barely touched on many of the sophisticated elements Canon has packed into this small camera. It’s marketed as an entry level prosumer but has the features of cameras costing many times as much.

That Canon chose to include its most sophisticated processor and autofocus system at this level surprised me but it’s a boon to the buyer who isn’t up to spending five or six times as much money and who’ll end up with a heavier, bulkier camera for having done so.

Tip: the manual that comes with this camera is really a quick start guide. A full manual is available, along with a good deal of other useful downloads, from the Canon sites worldwide. It seems for this price, Canon is selling its top of the line autofocus system and throwing in a camera and lens for free.

It’s that good. I tried this with a few EF lenses using the supplied adapter. It worked perfectly but was a bit heavy. I’m planning on buying this camera for myself but will get the 18-150mm lens rather than the 18-45mm lens I tried.

I’ve had my EOS R after I saved up and pushed passed the desire to settle for a RP. I’m glad i did since I would’ve out worked the RP in a short period of time. I’ve shot Concert, Engagement, Wedding, Private Portrait, and Event Photography besides hobby level photography and this camera has always delivered very well.

Only thing I can see this suffering with is speed on occasion with FPS so if you are shooting sports/auto it may lack a tad. It does work for some birding just be good on timing shots. The sharpness and clarity is on par with R6/R5 all day as I have personally compared and edited shots with the R5 directly for events both wedding and Concert.

This camera is an underdog. Now that Canon is growing its Mirrorless line. It seems to be less generous with Full frame Mirrorless. Now the price point has been replaced with well equipped crop sensor cameras.

If you want full frame you’ll want to snag a discontinued RP or R otherwise pony up the hiked up prices of the R6 and R5. Using adapted glass on the R has been an absolute blast with the Drop in filter EF/RF adapter.

Highly recommended. Seems to work well the most with Canon/Sigma EF glass especially Sigma ART glass. Tamron can be touchy and even occasionally throw error codes. Battery life is excellent. Carrying 4 batteries is more then enough for an exhausting shoot day.

I never use all 4. Can hit 3 tops usually. AF speed is very good on EF glass and works good enough for paid events. RF glass is insanely fast on this camera even on the Dual Pixel V1 system. I’ve personally loved the performance of the 100mm Macro RF, and 70-200 2.

8 RF. Only cons I think are apparent are: -Lack of Dual card slot (At least 2 SD would be nice) -Lack of IBIS -Touch Slider usage is poor to useless (Disabled on my camera) -Slow FPS (Desirable if you shoot birds/Automobiles) Pros outweigh the cons all day and I can always recommend the R.

Especially since the Video specs are STILL very good even compared to newer cameras. I honestly could never recommend the RP because of the Dynamic Range but with the R the Dynamic range is very good and has recovered shots very well.

The price difference being small from RP to R makes the R the obvious choice for me. I’ll be keeping this camera for good and it’ll become my new B camera if I find a proper A camera replacement.

This camera is NOT perfect, but that is expectable for an entry-level mirrorless camera. What I DISLIKE about the camera: 8-bit 4:2:0 color: colors look great right out of the camera, but they fall apart with intense color grading.

Specifically, this camera does have slog-2 and slog-3 color profiles BUT they are practically unusable because the bit depth isn’t sufficient enough to prevent banding in the sky, for example, when using these more aggressive log formats.

(This is fixed in the newer generation of the camera, the Sony Alpha a7 IV, which notably costs $500 more. ) Rolling shutter performance: this camera does not have the best rolling shutter performance; rapid side-to-side movements cause noticeable rolling shutter distortion.

(However, this isn’t noticeable when doing filming without rapid horizontal movement. Only really shows up when filming from a fast-moving vehicle or aggressively jerking/panning the camera horizontally.

) What I LOVE about the camera: EXTREMELY sharp 4K footage. The footage is oversampled from 6K without binning (it scales the image down rather than removing rows/columns of pixel which retains more of the sharpness of the 6K footage.

) Even though I can’t use log color profiles because of the not-so-great color bit depth, I can love using the built-in less aggressive cinematic color profiles such as cine2 which looks amazing right out of the camera or with zero to minimal color grading.

This is a personal preference, but I am in love with the body design of the camera. The metal body design of the Sony Alpha series cameras makes them so much more visually appealing than their competitors.

I use this camera for making low-budget indie-type films, and it has exceeded my expectations for what I expect a $2000 camera to be able to do. In conclusion, this camera is amazing! (I purchased it in September 2021, and I wish I would have waited a bit longer before purchasing it, as I would have rather paid the extra $500 for the newer generation, the Sony Alpha a7 IV, which released a month after I bought the a7 III.

I was just unfortunate with the timing of the purchase, and this isn’t anything against the camera itself. ) Note about the kit lens: The 28-70mm f/3. 5-5. 6 kit lens is a great starting-point for only $200, but if you want better picture quality, you will probably end up selling it and looking for a nicer lens! I’ve spent weeks researching which lenses to buy, and here are some notable discoveries I’ve made.

(I HIGHLY recommend you take some time to watch some reviews though to make sure these lenses are what you’re looking for. REMEMBER TO BUY FULL-FRAME LENSES NOT APS-C CROP SENSOR LENSES. ) My favorite lens to use with this camera: Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.

8: PROS: – considered by many to be the sharpest Sony lens ever – super compact and light-weight, perfect for gimbal shooting – aperture opens up wide and lets in about 4x more light than the kit lens at the widest aperture, so it’s great for low light filming and has more intense background blur – 55mm focal length on a full-frame sensor is very similar to what the human eye naturally sees.

There exists a saying, nifty fifty, referring to how useful the 50mm focal length is, and 55mm is barely any different from that; if anything, I prefer the slightly more compressed look; it makes it better for portraits, too.

it also zooms in to about an 83mm lens when using the APS-C/Super 35mm crop mode feature on the camera, which is even better for portraits, but you do lose a bit of image resolution. – is a Sony native lens so the autofocus is amazingly fast CONS: – is not a zoom lens – no optical image stabilization (OSS) – not weather sealed – expensive (about $1000 brand new but you can buy it for around $600-650 used, like new).

I got this model as an upgrade from the original A7. Focus is significantly faster, eye tracking is very accurate defaulting to face tracking if eye is not detectable. Colour accuracy is the same as the rest of Sony cameras I’ve used, more or less, as I need to do some corrections as usual in Lightroom.

Video is significantly better, 4k capability, an upgrade from 1080p on my previous one. As it is E-mount it can use all my previous lenses and adaptors. Lightweight and more compact than other it is perfect for travels.

Another convenient factor is the fact that it has 2 SD card slots. Usb-c makes transfer significantly faster. Connection to mobile through app is very convenient to transfer photos, edit and share immediately.

Can be used as webcam and charged at the same time if one is interested in live streaming or video content creation. Doesn’t overheat while used for extended amount of time: 1+h. If you are familiar with other Sony cameras then the menu is the same, no ore complicated or better than before.

I bought this camera a couple of weeks ago at a very competitive price. Been looking to go full frame and mirrorless for sometime as I had had my old cropped sensor DSLR for about 9-10 years. All the write ups on this full frame mirrorless camera are good and as it is an ‘old’ model you can get at reasonable price.

The reviews are correct, it is a great camera although I haven’t taken many shots yet, around 50, but it does take a great photo. Having moved from a different manufacturer to Sony it still feels a bit strange.

I would assess the camera 4/5 stars. Now I know that moving from one make to another is always going to be a bit difficult as manufacturers use different systems. However, I do have to say that the menus are extensive and I didn’t find the handbook that helpful.

Thankfully You Tube came to the rescue. I have found that Sony have their own training site which I have now started using.

Usually purchase from B&H but had to track my R3 down earlier this year from a local shop due to the supply constraints, so forgive the lack of “Verified Buyer” title. I’ve spent 6 months with the R3 now as a professional videographer and photographer.

I must say that from a video performance standpoint the R3 is likely the premier hybrid mirrorless on the market, outclassing even the R5C and other manufacturers offerings. Why? Despite lacking many video centric features, the R3 performs where it counts – 6K 60p internal raw, on a stacked BSI sensor (Canon’s finest) with extremely low rolling shutter (I’ve measured it to be ~9.

5ms readout in 6k30p raw). It also delivers what I believe to be the highest dynamic range of any Canon mirrorless, and excellent IBIS performance especially with recent updates is the icing on the cake for handheld shooters.

Gorgeous 4K at 30/60/120p in both a full frame or crop region, all with full AF capabilities. The rear display is far and away the best available on a MILC, at over 4 million dots. It’s crisp and beautiful for monitoring your footage.

The digital hotshoe lets you run XLRs, or use the excellent Canon digital shotgun mic. I could go on for a while. This camera truly feels like a mini-C500 when it comes to video. It’s puzzling that this camera has received as little attention in the video world as it has.

The body size is just right and what Canon should have used for the R5 with dual ergonomic grips and less bulk than the 1DX MIII but enough heft to balance the heavier, longer RF lenses. Eye Control focus point selection makes a return after two decades.

Pluses vs. R5: Higher capacity E-19 battery, built-in GPS, less grain and noise at high ISO, dual grip, AF-On Smart Controller button. Presumably less risk of overheating, but I haven’t had an opportunity to compare.

Negatives vs. R5: Lower resolution limits cropping (but less than you’d think). No 8K video. $$$ price. Pluses vs. 1DX MIII: Mirrorless features like silent operation and electronic viewfinder with exposure simulation, Flip-out, hinged LCD screen.

30 fps (Is this really necessary?) Negatives vs. 1DX MIII: Lacks strap slot in base; to use a hand grip, you need screw-in anchor. Shorter battery life. Only one CF Express slot. The second slot is for an SD card.

No explanation for the latter except a deliberate marketing decision by Canon to keep the 1 series distinctive. Even so, this camera is a 1DX MIII killer. Here’s what I’ve gleaned from a couple of weeks of use: Completely silent operation with electronic shutter is startling.

I actually turned on the artificial shutter sound to serve as confirmation that it was shooting. I’ll be sad to say goodbye to the satisfying machine gun shutter sound of the 1DX MIII. Well suited to back button focusing.

Assign the AF-On Smart Controller to initiate Eye Control focus point selection. Fine tune the selection by sliding your thumb. Then, depress and hold button to lock focus point and track motion. Reassign the adjacent AE Lock button to Eye Detection and the Set button to recenter focus point, and you can choose between focusing methods and put the focus point exactly where you want instantly without fumbling for controls.

Eye Control focus is more accurate than in the old EOS 3, and the viewfinder shows the focus point location, but it’s still a work in progress. You must assure that your eye is centered in the viewfinder, and the focus point is jittery rather than steady.

The ER-hE eyecup improves Eye Control, but it’s very bulky, blocks the top of the LCD screen, and has to be removed if you want to flip the screen out. The R3 includes the R5’s third control dial, which facilitates Manual Exposure/Auto ISO shooting.

One dial each for aperture, shutter speed, and exposure compensation. Reassign ISO to the lens or EF-RF adapter control ring for those rare occasions when you need to shift from Auto ISO. Be careful with the rubber Multi-function Shoe cover.

It only took 3 days for it to slide off unnoticed and be lost. Note that the AD-E1 shoe adapter is only required for accessories that have incompatible waterproofing skirts. Older Speedlites like the 550EX and some third party devices work without it.

The reviews I read online all seemed to culminate into one main point about the Canon RP: It’s a good but not great camera designed for a very specific and small demographic. I felt confident that I fit into that group, namely in that I needed a new secondary body, and this body fits my needs perfectly.

Besides all of the subjective comparisons and compliments I can give it, objectively the RP does fit very well into a new groove of its own. As an entry-level, full-frame, mirrorless camera, it doesn’t do everything perfectly, but it does what it does very very well.

Every shot I’ve taken, I love. Weighing in at just under what-I-expected pounds, it’s light and small enough to carry around anywhere. As a sub-four-digit-price-tag body, I’m comfortable taking it to a lot of places I would NEVER take my R5.

I recently shot a wedding with the R5 on one hip and the RP on the other, and the shots are comparable. Yes, the R5 has higher dynamic range and more post-processing latitude and more front-end features and higher resolution and 4x file sizes and yada yada yada, but the RP is so comfortable and fun to use that it cannot be overlooked as a useful body.

If you’re a beginner to full-frame and/or mirrorless cameras, or if you’re a pro in need of a secondary body that doesn’t cost you the arm you need to hold the lens, the RP is a great buy that I guarantee you won’t regret.

TL;DR- It’s light, it’s comfortable, it’s cheap, it works well, it’s Canon, it’s not perfect but it’s great at what it was designed to do, it keeps up with the competition, I didn’t have any buyer’s remorse on this one, and I don’t think you will either.

As a route into full frame photography and the EOS R system this is a fantastic camera choice. Yes, it’s an older camera, but for the price and the included 24-105 RF kit lens you can’t go wrong. The camera is small for a full frame camera, but I found it to be easy and comfortable to use.

The Canon menu system makes it easy to navigate around the settings and controls; I found it very intuitive. One of the things I like most is the sharpness and quality of the photos straight out of the camera.

Compared to my older crop sensor camera the images from the Canon EOS RP are crisp and the colours are beautiful. I love the Canon colour technology. Before deciding on this camera I compared it with other full frame cameras.

For me, this was an introduction to full frame and the EOS R system. I decided that I would rather invest in quality RF lenses and upgrade the camera body in the future. It’s not a flagship camera, so don’t expect it to be.

I think this camera is perfect for everyday photography. In my opinion, the sensor is great and the photographs it takes look professional. The video quality is also very good, with its fully articulated screen, the EOS RP will probably make a for a good video camera for YouTubers.

I found the battery life of this camera to be ok. I get about 250-300 photos from the supplied battery. I didn’t have a higher expectation on battery life, so, I found it to be reasonable. The battery level can drop rapidly when the indicator reaches the 50% mark.

I would recommend buying spare batteries so you don’t get caught out if the battery level depletes quickly. If you are looking for an excellent camera that can create sharp, colourful and beautiful images at a sensible price, the Canon EOS RP can deliver that.

If you are undecided, do a little bit of research and decide if this is the camera for you. If you want to invest in the impressive RF lenses and upgrade the camera body later, in my opinion, this is an excellent choice.

This is a highly capable full frame sensor camera with features that allow easy control of the shooting parameters. There is a trade-off between size and weight in going from APS-C sensor to full frame and I decided to accept the bigger camera in exchange for the better photo quality and convenient controls.

Note that most of the added weight and size is in the lenses, not so much the camera body. The camera also fit in my hand better than the Canon M50. I already have an S110 pocket camera and my daughter has an APS-C type so the RP adds some professional level quality that I am enjoying.

There is a lot to learn in order to make full use of all of the camera’s features, which you can learn from online tutorials and the full manual available online. I also want to point out that if you are buying a camera at this price point and capability level you should be reading professional reviews with sample photos, such as Imaging Resource.

YouTube reviews can be useful too, but may be biased and in some details I have found just wrong.

I’ve used lensrentals. com for about 10 years to rent lenses but this was my first time renting a camera. I was asked to photograph a wedding and only have crop sensor cameras so I wanted to rent something better and I’ve been intrigued by the mirrorless cameras.

It came with a fully charged battery plus the charger. I put the battery and my SD card in and took one test photo of my cat in the kitchen and immediately fell in love with this camera. (I shot on aperture priority at 2.

8, auto ISO, which ended up being 25600, then took a photo with my 70D aperture set at 2. 8, and the auto ISO was 6400 and that image looked noisier than the one taken with the R6. ) Some people had said there was a slight learning curve with a mirrorless camera so I watched some YouTube videos and looked up info about the R6 on websites.

Lens Rentals also included a double sided laminate guide, which I sat down with the camera and went through each section so I could physically see and get a feel for the menu options, etc. Having used Canon products for over 20 years, it felt very familiar and I was pretty comfortable.

I had also heard it might take time for your eyes to get used to the electronic view finder, but I was fine with it. I’m not used to just using a screen to capture the shot so I really only used the screen when I was doing playback to make sure my settings were good.

There are some advanced settings that I didn’t really get to explore in the 4 days I had it but I hope to be able to buy my own in the near future. I rented this with the control ring adapter plus the 24-70mm f/2.

8L II, 70-200mm f/2. 8L IS III, 85mm f/1. 8, and didn’t have any issues. (I didn’t rent the RF lenses because I was using my camera as a second camera so I wanted to be able to use the lenses with both cameras.

) I used the 85mm f/1. 8 to photograph my niece’s cheer expo with and the 24-70mm f/2. 8L II was on the R6 all day for the wedding, it was a great combo. Customer service was great as usual. My order arrived a day early so I got to explore it for an extra day which was a plus.

Finally! I’ve been a photography enthusiast for many years. I’ve made a little money, but never enough to justify buying the dream gear. I had always shot on crop factors (40D, 7D, 80D, etc) to save a bit of money, while jealous of those walking around with whatever 5D was the top dog at the time.

My first foray into mirrorless was another brand that looks retro and is relatively small in the hands. I was happy to have the mirrorless capabilities, but it was never quite accurate enough in the autofocus world and I always had a little bit of trouble getting the colors I wanted in Lightroom.

Then came the R6. I was so happy I held on to my Canon glass. It had all the button familiarity of my 7D, but with the performance I had only dreamed of. Eye focus is insane. Touch screen auto focus selection is incredible.

To be able to capture my son playing soccer running full speed down the field with my old 70-200 and lock on his eye and capture as many frames as I want (all in focus at 2. 8) — incredible. Did I wish it had more megapixels? Kind of.

For the times I want to crop really tight, yes. But for the speed at which my aging laptop can still whip through the RAW files, no. And honestly, I have cropped tight enough on a few images that I was a hair nervous printing at a 16×20 size — but then only to realize they printed beautifully.

I’d buy it again in a heartbeat.

One year after buying this camera, I am updating my review from 3 stars to 4. I hesitated on changing the review of the “value” but decided it is more positive than negative. The camera is very expensive, and I stand by my original assessment that it has awful documentation (bordering on useless), it is difficult to learn functionality because the settings menu is extremely long and unintuitive, and yes I still must occasionally go online to ask photographers how to perform certain functions.

The $100 adaptor to connect to standard Canon lenses, like the 50 mm (by way of example) will NOT correct for back-focus issues, so you are required to buy the more expensive lens manufactured for the EOS line.

The learning curve for this camera takes months. The maximum built-in exposure time is 30″ which for astrophotography is inadequate. The camera must be changed to bulb mode, or manual mode, and a hardware or software intervalometer is required for exposures requiring greater than 30″.

That said, the signal-to-noise ratio is phenomenal at 1600 ISO. And it can be used for day-time photography as well. I’m going to keep it for at least another 6 months, maybe a year.

This is a great camera, but it looks like Canon just listened to YouTube noise makers and not to the silent world by discontinuing DSLR cameras. The reasons and EVF is dark first and lights up, not necessarily to the correct brightness.

The LCD screen goes blank at times. In the single point focus mode, the focus point is not small enough, therefore it often gets confused. In the eye focus mode, it misses eyes a number of times. The spot metering circle is too large, probably like partial area metering boxes rather than spot metering.

Not sure by transforming to a mirrorless world, we have to compromise so many things. I am not particularly crazy about burst rate, since I don’t shoot sports, but, so much automation is generally for photography challenged people, rather than experienced photographers.

No offense meant to anyone. Other issues are if you leave the camera on, the sensor is constantly exposed and perhaps bad for life of sensor and it could destroy a few pixels. I am sure Canon’s sensors are of high quality, and this is probably one of the advanced sensors, but the sensors if accidently exposed to constant bright light, could destroy.

These is a warning about this in the manual. Therefore, I prefer DSLRs. I could list a number of things, but I was hoping for 5D Mark V and it certainly does not seem to be coming. Therefore my suggestion to Canon is to take a survey from its existing customers on what kind of products they would like, rather than listen to YouTubers.

This is the camera that I originally wanted. I could only afford the RP but I finally got the camera I wanted. The only differences I see between the R and the RP is more features on the R. The bigger battery, sensor cover, a few more megapixels, to mention a few.

I only take pictures so I can’t comment on the video side of either camera. The picture quality so far to date on either camera is great. One would be hard pressed to see a difference. One more feature is the guide for manually focusing.

I really like that a lot as sometimes my eyes deceive me. All in all I am very happy with both cameras with the R being my main shooter and the RP being my backup or walk about camera because of its smaller size.

I am not a professional. I do not have a need for the latest or greatest specs. Most don’t! Spend your money on glass for your camera. Lenses are a bigger bang for the buck than any body. Learn your camera inside and out, the pros and the cons.

The fun for me is figuring out how to take that impossible shot with what you got in your hand!.

I bought this as an insurance replacement for my damaged A72 and it betters the A72 in just about every respect. The larger grip makes handling the camera easier and the simplified button layout on the rear is welcome.

The ability to move the focus point when using spot focusing is enabled full time on the A73 (it needed to be selected each time on the 2) which is a great improvement, though I’m still getting to grips with the focus point selector joystick.

Being able to ‘tie’ the spot meter to the focus point is also really useful. The action of the Exposure Compensation button has been stiffened so it is less prone to moving accidentally and the front and rear selector wheels are more prominent and so easier to find when using the viewfinder.

The shutter sound is much quieter than on the M2 and the ability to go to silent shooting has been useful for wildlife work. The longer battery life is an absolute godsend and I have not felt the need to take a spare battery with me at all so far.

The eyecup is more ergonomic too and doesn’t keep detaching from the viewfinder, as it did on the M2. Image quality is superb and anecdotally, I would rate it as better then the M2. Downsides? The menu system is still quite complex but once set up to your liking, it isn’t necessary to go there too often unless you like to tweak a lot – in which case, familiarity would undoubtedly be achieved soon enough.

Charging from a computer now takes forever so the mains unit has to be used – this would have been better with a longer cable so the camera doesn’t have to sit on the floor during charging; I got round this by swapping the lead for a longer one but feel one of adequate length should really be supplied at this price point.

Images below taken with a variety of lenses (24-105G, 70-200G, 90MacroG) though I shoot in RAW and process in Lightroom so not sure how helpful they are in demonstrating in camera image quality!.

Oh, the adventures we have been on together and the stories I’ve captured. This camera has been my baby for the past two years. My escape, my muse, my friend. I’ve been able to capture images and stories of my close friends, family, and clients along with preserving my own history.

I bought this camera for school in 2019. When I first got it I started taking portraits of people on campus. I ended up getting into my first photo exhibition, won some awards later on in my second year, and even got a contract to work for my school.

The build quality looks professional and the images have kept up with my work for two years now and still are running strong. I love how I can break it down or build it up with mods like an extra battery pack, flash trigger, and full-out cage for video production.

It works well on a gimbal because it’s lightweight. I can throw it in my camera bag for travel and snap it on a 50mm or 35mm. I love the feel of the shutter button and the sound. I can also go into silent shooting mode with a push of a button.

I’ve made prints on Epson printers and they look fantastic when printed with adobe RGB profile. If you are looking for a mirrorless system that is extremely versatile in both video and professional photography work this is the camera to get.

My clients have been happy and I enjoyed having this camera as my partner for the past two years. Thank you, Sony for making a wonderful camera. The cons: The menu system takes a bit of a learning curve.

The app is kinda slow and clunky. No flap to cover the sensor when swapping out the lens so dust can get in. Feels kinda small in hands without a grip. Needs a good lens for it to shine. I was getting chromatic aberrations with the low-end lens.

The screen doesn’t flip out and is hard to see on harsh sunny days.

The camera has a complex set on menus, but the basic functioning is excellent. It is not designed for standard photography ,being optimized for astrophotography. It works quite well for daylight work, however, it adds a bit of reddish coloration to daylight photos.

This is due to the modified filter on the sensor. Another minor issue is that some vignetting shows up on lenses that are designed to be used in DX format cameras. Again this is to be expected. I have not been able to work with it as much as I would have liked to, but all imagery has been very good so far.

I have only been able to do a modest amount of astrophotography with it so far. But the results are far better than I was able to achieve with a D7000 Nikon camera. All in all an fine piece of equipment and very satisfactory for my purposes.

Pros: Image quality is excellent at 36mp as expected. Pro camera which is not so hard to use but some knowledge of camera settings is definitely required if your thinking of getting one. Cons: Camera is still pricey to say it’s been out for some years.

However you are still getting what you pay for. It’s hard to point out any bad points.

Pros: Designed for astronomy and does a much better job of recording feint nebulae than a standard camera. It can also be used for normal photography with excellent colour reproduction and sharpness.

Has a lovely shutter action – quiet and smooth. Cons: Nothing.

I have been a Nikon user since 1985 and have been using a Nikon D300 since 2008. It has served me well and has never let me down. I never found the 12mp sensor it has as a hindrance to the photos I’ve taken.

As time went by I did miss the superior high ISO performance the newer models offered. I’ve been reluctant to upgrade as the mirrorless revolution is quickly replacing DSLR’s. I’ve been on the fence as to where to go with my next camera for a couple of years now.

The problem I had is I have 7 nikon lenses that are still perfectly capable but would be handicapped if I went mirrorless and used an adapter. I never felt using an adapter is what I wanted to deal with and replacing my lenses with the current mirrorless versions would cost me a small fortune.

After plenty of personal debate and the current instant rebate offering I decided to stick with dslr’s and purchased the Nikon D850. The 45mp resolution is more than I really need but the price of the D850 isn’t much higher than the 24mp D780 at this point.

All in all it’s a better all around camera; better build quality and much more. So far, so good. It is very similar in operation to my old D300 that transitioning to it was seamless. It really is the best all around dslr that Nikon has made.

Finally a competitor to Canon’s highly regarded 5D series. The resolution is incredible and the color is gorgeous. All other functions are highly refined and the mirror/shutter mechanism is well damped and super smooth.

What more do you want from a camera? B&H’s service was top notch and I had the camera in my hands the next day. Mirrorless may be the future but dslr’s have proven reliability and still much to offer in the years to come.

I bought this camera a few months ago as an upgrade to my D750 but waited until now to rate it to have some real experience to be able to report on. There is nothing I dislike about this camera. Here is why I love it vs.

the D750 which I loved to use too: Features: I use photo stacking for Macro and find the Nikon set up on the D850 easy to use. There are other features I have yet to explore. Focus Area Coverage: It is much wider than the D750, so it is easier to use off center focus points.

I always thought this was the worst thing about the D750 so am happy this was improved here. Build Quality / Weather Sealing – the D850 is a more solid camera that is a bit larger. Viewfinder – Excellent size and coverage.

AutoFocus – fast and accurate Image Quality – Excellent – so far I have not seen a big improvement over the D750 but have not tried making any large prints. – The only downside to this camera is the huge Raw file sizes which load up your computer memory.

I’m going to try Raw Lossless Compressed to reduce file size. Overall, this is the best camera I’ve ever owned.

Widely regarded as one of the best non-Pro Nikon DSLRs in recent years, building on the strengths of the already-good D7000. Spend time searching the specialist web sites for reviews about the D7200 and they’ll almost unanimously rave about this model.

Not perfect though. Lack of a flip screen will prove a hindrance for those keen on ‘staged’ photography – such as product, landscape or macro work – where the camera may tripod mounted or otherwise positioned ‘out-of-hand’ meaning getting your eye to the viewfinder requires some contortions on the photographer’s part, would perhaps be better looking at a camera offering that specific facility.

(That said, it is possible to connect your mobile phone to the camera via wifi and use that as a viewfinder. Bit of a faff but doable, so all is not lost. ) However, for an in-hand camera, those looking for a low cost entrance into the world of DSLR photography can do much worse than tracking down a good condition, low shutter oount* unit at a comparatively low-cost when compared to something new.

(* For the D7200, Nikon Claims a shutter life expectancy of 150,000 aotuations). I don’t feel qualified to really offer tips or recommendations, but here are a couple of findings I’ll pass on in the hope someone will benefit: 1) When Choosinga camera, spend as much time – if not more! – investigating lens.

The camera body with its many functions and tricks can only go so far. Lenses are an equally – and often more – important item in the kit bag. 2) Get a sling strap. It won’t improve your photos, but it will make walking around for hours at a time with a zoomed-up DSLR a much, much better experience.

3) Learn how to use your DSLR properly. Seriously; if you aren’t interested in realising the benefits that understanding how manually controlling depth of field, shutter speed, focal points, ISOs, etc, etc can really bring your subject to life, then save some money and buy a decent point-and-shoot compact camera instead.

Pictures can be just as good and you’ll likely have more of them as, being compact, there’s a greater Chance you’ll have your camera with you. Your bank balance will thank you, too :).

The camera does a great job of focusing and exposing right out of the box, and the kit lens has plenty of zoom range for most general photography, plus it is stabilised. The camera feels really good in the hand, and all the controls are easy to get at if/when you want to.

Battery seems to last for ages and only takes a couple of hours for a full charge. The picture quality is lovely – and I’m quite fussy. There’s even a pop-up flash to subtly fill in portraits shot against the light, and it works well left to itself with no fiddling needed.

The camera’s well-shaped grip means you can pick it up quickly and securely with one hand, and turn it on with a finger while bringing it up to your eye; there’s no waiting for it to fire up or for a motorised lens to extend like with a compact camera.

If you wear glasses note that it’s just possible to see all four corners of the viewfinder picture without moving around, but only just. It’s an easy camera to use and understand even without looking at the manual, and I think it would be as good for a beginner as for an enthusiast.

And it does a great job on its own in ‘auto’ if you just want to take pictures without diving into the technical stuff. All in all, ‘Highly Recommended’, and this kit from Harvey Norman is really good value.

Had been undecided between D750 and D810 for a while. After reading lots of reviews and weighing my personal preference on image quality, colour fidelity and it’s native ISO of 64 for high contrast landscape shooting.

D810 was my final pick and it does meet my expectation with stunning image contrast I have not been able to capture in my previous D5100 and the current D7100. I am not a pro but often being amazed by the stunningly beautiful images printed in BBC Natural History Series Books of my collection.

I know D810 is not the camera for those gorgeous BBC wildlife shootings but really wanted to get a pro camera for great images. D850 is very attractive but costs more than twice what I could get a used set of D810.

I’d been too used to scene modes and most of the time using only Auto mode in my cropped sensors and I did not pick up much of the photography skills until D810 came on board since it’s a pro-grade camera and I am now forced to make settings, adjust exposures, apertures, ISO and so on which I find it a fun to do so and the best thing is I can get the exposure and colour I like from settings.

Happy with D810’s capability of sharpness, the colour accuracy, and the beautiful bokeh on fast bright lenses! The attached are taken with Nikkor 24-120mm F4 VR and Sigma 85mm F1. 4 EX DG.

I’ve owned this camera for about a week, and so far it’s great. I’m only a photography hobbyist, and this is great for my current capabilities and understanding of photography. I’ve used it on a couple of photo walks with folks around my neighborhood, and it’s very light/portable.

It’s the perfect size to put in one of those Patagonia Atom sling bags to keep at the ready. The battery lasts a long time and charges quickly. I’ve kept it in manual mode the whole time I’ve had it, and being able to change the ISO on the fly is a completely new concept for me, as I’ve only shot film until owning this camera.

Being able to change the ISO, the shutter speed, and the aperture all with the same dial is a very handy feature. Before I figured out how to do that, I was changing all those settings on the touch-screen like a scrub.

The screen is great, and it’s very easy to move into different positions. The screen even automatically turns off when you bring the camera up to your face so you don’t accidentally change any settings with your nose.

The menus are also very straightforward. The camera ships with Japanese as the default language, but in spite of that, I was able to find my way to the ‘change default language’ and switch it to english.

The lens it ships with is great too. It’s good for shooting up-close subjects, but you’ll need something bigger for subjects further away. Overall, it’s a good amateur-level camera. I haven’t truly put it through its paces yet, but I’m looking forward to it.

My aging Nikon D5200 has a lot of shutter actuations, an increase in hot pixels, and a cracked but functional LCD screen. I was ready to go mirrorless, but I could not find something that would match up with an all-in-one lens.

I would have liked to continue using a Tamron 18-400, but I was open to a mirrorless compatible lens if it could offer a similar range of coverage. I did not, so I looked at Nikon’s SLRs. Weight has become important to me; the D5600 was the lightest.

Similarities with the body and menus to the D5200 were also a plus. My prior lenses remained usable. Having opted for the D5600, I found that almost none were in stock. It is now labeled an older product.

Nikon may have discontinued its manufacture. Bodies alone were not available, so I took a gamble with a kit lens and body combo. The gamble is that there is no manufacturer warrantee, only a limited warrantee by the seller, because the products were not produced for our region.

I got a shock when I turned on the camera; the menus were in Asian pictographs. I did find one line that was in Roman letters -Language. Once I selected that and English I was ready to continue my set-up.

The D5600 works, and is compatible with my lenses. However the New Nikkor 18-55 lens is not reverse compatible with my D5200. When the 18-55 is put on the D5200, the message Lens not attached appears.

I note the my ML-L3 infrared remote does not work on the newer D5600. I did buy a corded remote instead. So far the gamble has worked. I may go mirrorless and or full frame later, but for now I can wait for the right all-in-one zooms to develop.

If I find any other issues with the D5600, I’ll update this review.

Small, lightweight and excellent IQ. I shoot exclusively in Manual mode, and RAW files only. I process all of my files in third party editing software, so my skill level may be slightly above the target consumer.

Still, I find this body a worthy addition to my kit, it’s a great little camera. Intuitive touchscreen, and a minor learning curve in adjusting settings like ISO and aperture, but it’s quite simple. I’m sure full auto is fine, but I never use it.

I also never use the video function, so I cannot comment on that, either. It’s still a winner, especially if one has smaller hands and/or needs a lightweight kit.

YO!!! This is a really good start up camera for anyone honestly, I use mine for videography and photography most of the time. The weight of the camera is do-able, the way canon has made the body fit to the grip of your hand is very useful.

Overall the functions and setting are really easy to learn and excel in. Let’s talk about the quality that this camera can bring, no lie, the standard lens that come with the t5i body is only okay, I would recommend you save to buy a better lens that suits your work.

However the body of this camera has been great to me so far, the durability is has been holding up after intense usage. I get really great shots with this camera and it’s the only camera I have. I really like the touch screen feature and the screen clip back it really helps too when you want to take selfies.

I occasionally vlog with this camera too! So if youre looking to do a little of what I do such as photography, videography and you’re on a budget, i would totally recommend this camera.

I’ve had my canon T5i camera for around 4+ years. I love it. It’s my first professional camera. It has lots of different settings. It also had a lcd monitor screen on it which is awesome to have when recording or previewing your photos.

I would highly recommend this camera.

Pros: I like the touch screen, can set up on a tripod and do all operations from the touch screen. Particularly like, you can focus at any point on the screen by touch, then tap to take the picture. Beautiful colour rendition and photos.

24m pixels provides larger files, ideal for landscape at low iso, so no noise. 5 frames/second, the standard of the old film days, is adequate for action photography. 19 point autofocus. I like the self timer function, you can set it to take up to 10 photos, this is great for astro photography for stacking images, you don’t have to touch the camera thereby avoiding blurry images.

Improvements in noise control by a few more stops, so on balance 24m pixel makes use of the improved image quality. My 7 year old 7D could get noisy at iso 320 for example, bear in mind noise control is harder to control on a much faster 7D camera, the somewhat slower speed of the 760D enables better noise control.

Accurate autofocusing, live view assist is great for critical focusing. Lots of nice touches and improvements. Like the scene modes, great for point and shoot, fun photography. A great camera for the enthusiast/advanced amateur, all rounder, looking for an improvement in controls and digital performance, not necessarily professional grade performance for specific interests, also more budget friendly.

Great as a second/backup camera also. Cons: A few of the buttons are to sensitive, too few iso selections, seems like some iso levels are missing. If your into sports or bird photography, this will lack a little on the autofocus modes and shooting rate, 5 fps a little slow.

Feels a little plasticky, but then I have been used to using a 7D. Like the touch screen, but worried it could easily get broken off, so I take a lot of photos with the screen closed. Its much better to use the viewfinder anyway.

Not used the movie mode, so can’t comment.

This is a great camera. I purchased it for my microscope, without the lens. The USB connection to the computer brings up the live view easily, and saves the shots automatically. The image on its screen is better than what I see on the computer.

I made the adapter to the microscope and have the shutter controlled by another computer through the external shutter wire to do time lapse photography. The camera is still new to me but everything seems great.
