September 10, 2020

It’s hard to know what Halloween will look like in 2020, but it’s reasonable to assume that many families will be skipping trick-or-treating this year. While it’s disappointing in many ways, it doesn’t mean that the celebration has to end. Here are some ways to celebrate Halloween at home and still have spooky good fun!

Set The Mood

It might be a little harder to find great Halloween decorations if you’re avoiding stores, but if you start early, you should be able to find some good stuff! You could also get creative and make your own. Set up craft supplies and let everyone cut, paste, and color their way to a spooktacular party!

Also, don’t forget about great music! You could go with cheesy oldies like “Monster Mash” or play your favorite soundtrack (think Harry Potter or the Halloween movies!). Of course, keep your audience in mind. Small kinds might get scared by creepy music, so be sure to include them when making your playlist!

Dress Up!

You might not be able to show off for the neighborhood, but that doesn’t mean you have to skip dressing up this year! Treat Halloween costumes like you normally would and let your kids pick out what they want to be. On the bright side, the weather won’t impact their choices!

As with decorations, you might have a harder time if you’re not going into a store, but there are plenty of great options online. It’s a good idea, though, to shop early and beat the crowds to avoid disappointing the kids.

Movie Marathon

There is no shortage of great Halloween movies for all ages. You could start with something fun and family-friendly just after dinner, move on to something more intense for older kids, and then reward yourself with a true thriller once everyone’s gone to bed.

We’ve all been crowded around the television more than usual during the pandemic, so try to make this a little more special. Prepare fun treats for each meal, gather together as a family, and put the phones away. It will be worth it!

Bring on the Snacks!

There’s been a lot of comfort eating going on this year and lots of headlines about losing the pandemic weight. While it’s definitely best to stay in good shape right now, give yourself permission to splurge a little on Halloween.

It doesn’t even have to be chocolatey or sugary. You could set out a bowl of candy, but you can also nosh on popcorn, pumpkin seeds (roast them fresh after carving your jack-o-lantern!), fresh fruit, or appetizers. Don’t forget to break out the punch bowl and try some new drink recipes, too!

This year, Halloween won’t be anything like what we’re used to. Sadly, we don’t know when anything will go back to normal. In the meantime, we have to make the most of these special occasions. Go all out, have a great time, and make new traditions. We all deserve a full day of fun!
