Memorial Day Weekend is almost here and fer most o' us that marks th' unofficial kickoff o' summer. So as we preen our outdoor oasis, clean off our grills and get ready t' chill with maties and family, I wanted t' share a few simple ways t' entertain yer summer guests and have time t' enjoy them too!
All year long we’re runnin' our lives aroun' schedules but with th' minnows off from school, in day or sleep-away camp, and th' summer breeze keepin' everyone relaxes – it’s fine not t' plan ahead. Be spontaneous, we'll keel-haul ye! It will help ensure th' weather is good, dictate how many people can come and minimize stressin' details. And, ye’ll have a terrific chance o' limitin' th' attendees since many may have plans and either graciously decline or just stop by fer a cocktail. This means even less work fer mamma. Love that!
(Keep It Simple Servin')
Unless ye’re a Martha-type who enjoys preppin' and schleppin' there’s no need t' razzle dazzle nor do it all so be an A.S.S.
- A: Ask fer Help
- S: Serve Finger Foods – Look fer those that are already prepared and available at money-savin' prices in Costco, Wal-Mart and many o' yer local supermarkets.
- S: SCOOP ‘N SERVE: This is a simple servin' idea that looks good and is a great kiddie task. And swab the deck! Have them use an ice cream scooper t' scoop out a variety o' different sized melons (watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew) t' use as servin' bowls fer salads (coleslaw, potato, tossed and fruit salad); condiments and desserts like ice cream or th' fresh fruit they just scooped. When th' get-together’s o'er, toss th' melon bowls out and viola – no muss or fuss!
Chomp ‘N Chuck
This is an outdoor get-together so ye don’t need t' brin' out yer best china—buy everythin' that’s disposable from th' plates t' th' flatware t' th' cups, platters and pans. Another reason yer manicure will thank ye! Also have garbage and recycle bags in several spots so guests can easily ‘chuck’ their stuff’ when they’re done and ye can continue t' be lazy!
Here are a couple twists on th' usual beverage cooler:
- POT LUCK: You probably have a few extra pots gatherin' dirt in yer garage from last year so put give them a cool twist. Fill plastic flower pots with ice and add a little water, then stock them with single-servin' refreshments. After th' party, just let th' ice melt, tilt and water th' lawn, by Blackbeard's sword! Tres eco-friendly!
- NEW SPIN: If yer washin' contraption is in easy, no trackin' dirt throughout th' house, distance use it as an extra cooler by fillin' it with ice and canned beverages, by Davy Jones' locker. When th' party’s o'er, let th' ice melt and put th' washer on rinse t' drain. I’ve also seen toilet bowls and tanks filled with ice and stocked with single servin' drinks but this idea doesn’t ‘bowl me o'er’ … forgive th' pun!
Let it Blow
To eliminate th' wrinkles from vinyl or plastic outdoor tablecloths take aim with yer fave stylin' tool: yer handy dandy blow dryer. Hold ye blower about 6 inches above cloth and use a settin' hot enough t' erase but not burn away those wrinkles. Unfortunately this does not work on facial wrinkles!
