There are many shrubs that can tolerate full sun and would make a good addition to your landscape. Some of the more popular varieties include:
-Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis)
– Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia)
– Snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus)
– Inkberry (Ilex glabra)
– Bayberry (Myrica pensylvanica)
Each of these shrubs has its own unique characteristics that can contribute to the overall look and feel of your front yard. Buttonbush, for example, is known for its round, white flowers that bloom in the summer.
Summersweet is a fragrant shrub that produces small, white flowers in the summer and fall. Snowberry is an attractive shrub that produces white berries in the winter.
Inkberry is a dense, evergreen shrub that is often used as a foundation plant or as a hedge. Bayberry is a low-growing shrub that produces small, fragrant berries in the fall.
All of these shrubs are good choices for full sun locations. When selecting a shrub for your front yard, it is important to consider the size and shape of the plant, as well as its bloom time and fruit production.
20 Best Shrubs For Full Sun In Front Of House
1. Southern Living Plants Sunshine Ligustrum Evergreen Shrub 2 Gal
This eye-catching plant is the Sunshine Ligustrum from the Southern Living Plant Collection. This shrub offers brilliant golden-yellow colored foliage that will bring great year-round color to your landscape.
New growth is lime green that will continuously intensify to yellow hues as spring turns into summer, arriving at a vibrant golden yellow. The more sunlight they get, the better. More sun produces more yellow leaves, while less sun results in more yellow-green foliage.
This is a sterile, non-invasive cultivar of Ligustrum that will not re-seed and spread. This plant looks great planted in containers, as a hedge or accent in the landscape and will also respond well to shaping into simple topiary forms.
Another advantage to the Sunshine Ligustrum is that it doesn’t bloom, which is great for allergy sufferers. When planting this shrub select a location that will receive full sun, use a well-drained garden soil mixed with your native soil to backfill the hole and use a slow-release fertilizer annually in spring to keep your Sunshine Ligustrum healthy and brilliantly shining.
I have several Sunshine Ligustrum shrubs from a local nursery that I purchased and planted this past Spring. They were lovely and so far so good. The one I received from BB yesterday is not so nice. It is rather shabby looking with unusually small leaves.
The plant was about the same size as the ones from the local nursery but cost quite a bit more – almost double the price. It didn’t seem to have any damage from shipping so that’s a plus considering the condition of the boxes when they arrived.
I have an upcoming order for six more – I placed the orders at the same time but I split the order since I ordered so many plants. I’m hoping they are in much better shape.
If I could give 10 stars I would. I am an experienced homeowner gardener (but not a professional) and I ordered 10 of these with my first purchase then came back for more. I lined them up on each side of a decomposed pathway I build in my backyard.
At the end of the shrubs I paired them with yellow African Bulbine which looks amazing with this chartreuse color. I planted them last April 2019. It’s been one year and they have doubled in size and are healthy and beautify.
They were planted in FULL west facing sun in Texas heat. They are still thriving. I love the dark green new growth as it’s growing. The more sun, the more yellow the leaves turn. The best thing about this shrub is that it is evergreen and is beautiful all year long even in the winter.
The leaves may think out a little and maybe even a lot at time, but don’t panic. It will put on major new growth in the spring.
My ‘Sunshine’ Ligustrum arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Not chartreuse yet, but a lovely shade of light lime green. I bought the small 2. 5 qt plant and am looking forward to watching it grow.
I live in Idaho and was worried that the plant wouldn’t survive, as it’s still pretty chilly here. But, it is thriving. I liked it so much, I ordered 2 more. Very pleased with Walmart and Southern Living.
Encore Azaleas are the world’s best-selling, re-blooming Azaleas. They boast blooms in Spring, Summer, and Fall. The Autumn Bonfire has rich green foliage and creates an intense display of vivid true red semi-double blooms that can bring an abundance of color to your landscape or container gardens.
Encore Azaleas bloom best when given four to six hours of direct sunlight daily. When planting this Azalea dig the hole twice as wide as the pot and mix slightly acidic garden soil in with your native soil, then leave the top of the root ball half an inch above the ground level when filling the hole with soil.
The pot was indeed three gallons. The azalea plant was about a quart. It was healthy and my husband planted it right away. All this rain has helped it considerably, I am sure; however, the price of the plant was way out of the realm of reality! I paid $100 for an azalea in a three gallon pot.
$100. My fault, you say, for being gullible? No, no. I expected a fair return for my dollar. I am hoping that this azalea is a traffic stopper when it blooms. I bought it as a gift for my husband because I love him and he is an avid gardener.
I don’t know if I would do it again simply because we are on a fixed income and don’t have much extra money. Since he is so happy with his new plant makes it a whole lot more worthwhile. He asked me, “How much did you pay for it? $19.
99? $29. 99?” I told him it was not polite to ask the price of a gift. I couldn’t tell him it was an arm and a leg.
Unbelievable blooms on “Autumn Fire” from receiving in late spring here the last day of July. It does have some blooms in summer. Very happy how dark the very shiny leaves are – has grown about 4″ to 6″ in this dry year, but watered 3 times a week- M,W,F – will go to only 2 x for August to harden off new stems for winter – Sept 1 x.
Fire plants were all healthy and were the first variety of encore azaleas to bloom. One of them was planted near some old Hino Crimson azaleas and the reds in those plants matched perfectly. Also the Fire matches the color in our old red Rhodies.
Very pleased that we chose the right red encore from among the many available!.
The Southern Living Plant Collection is proud to present the Jubilation Gardenia, a delightful reinvention of a Southern classic. This evergreen re-blooms fragrantly through summer and fall, and retains rich emerald leaves through winter.
Gardenias are known for their extravagantly fragrant blooms and the Jubilation is as aromatic as they come. The Jubilation allows you to enjoy breathtaking white double blooms with intoxicatingly rich aromas throughout much of the year! This variety is remarkably easy to maintain once established in your garden or landscape, and is noted for being disease as well as deer resistant.
Year after year, youll wonder how you ever lived without the sweet scent of the Jubilation Gardenia.
The plant arrived with many crisp dried brown leaves dropping. I watered it and put it by a sunny window. ,I noticed that there were many leaves that appeared chewed on and there has been a steady leaf loss.
The plant is almost leaf bare. It is now in a new pot with new dirt with the hope it may recover. I can only assume it had some sort of infestation before it was shipped so I may be wasting my time.
Very nice plant, arrived in good shape. I immediately planted it in the yard. It did not have flower buds but after 2 months was covered with fragrant white flowers! The flowers quickly dried up but it is still blooming so there are still some flowers.
It has not grown since I planted it in early spring-3 months ago. It says “compact growth” so maybe that means it is a slow grower. It is alive so I am very happy, I do not have a green thumb. The 4 rating is hopeful that this will one day reach the 3′ mark.
If I felt confident of that it would get a 5 star rating.
I’m very happy with my plant that came in the mail. It was clearly marked what size, so I wasn’t surprised by the size at all. I was surprised by how well the plant was packaged. There was so much cardboard and plastic around the pot to prevent dirt from getting everywhere.
packaged arrived after about a week, and I was able to track it on the fedex website easily. I got this planted in the ground right away and it flourished after that. I’ll definitely be ordering from plantaddicts again.
I love supporting small businesses and there are so many beautiful plants on the site that they offer.
No plant expresses the grace of the South better than the gardenia. This gardenia has dark green evergreen foliage and produces delightfully fragrant white double form flowers for up to 3 months during the summer.
This Gardenia can be planted in the landscape as an accent, specimen, medium hedge or foundation and should be planted close to walkways or outdoor living areas to enjoy its sweet aroma. When planting this Gardenia, dig the hole twice as wide as the pot and mix rich garden soil in with your native soil, then leave the top of the root ball 1/2 inch above the ground level when filling the hole with soil.
Use a slow-release granular fertilizer in spring. Not guaranteed to be in bloom on arrival.
This was my first time buying a shrub type plant and I decided to go to Walmart instead of my local favorite garden nursery because the price was so good. I’ve read growing Gardenia is really difficult in Central Texas because our soil ph is not suitable.
Anyways I planted this baby in a spot that wasn’t the best soil. very clay like. I just dug a hole. filled with miracle garden soil and within probably a month I have beautiful gardenia flowers blooming! I would recommend Walmart for buying gardenias especially if you live in Austin or San Antonio area.
I could not rate these plants any higher. I ordered a total of 8 plants. All of them were healthy and beautiful. All of the plants were covered with buds and 3 had flowers when they arrived. Excellent packaging keeps the plants safe and healthy.
When bought it was full of fragrant flowers. Leaves started turning yellow within 2 days. Eventually, I checked the roots were in a tight ball and a hard covering had formed. Repotted and several times have tried loosening the roots.
Two months later still nursing it, all but 2 buds have turned yellow and have falled off without opening.
The Burning Bush is the most colorful shrub you can find! These plants are green from spring until mid-summer. In late summer and early fall, you’ll see the leaves turn bright red. Plant the shrubs in rows for an amazing display of bright red color.
Burning Bushes can be used as privacy hedges, and grow to 6 feet tall. Easy to grow, these plants are hardy and adaptable to a number of growing conditions. Incredibly drought-tolerant, these bushes don’t need to be constantly watered!.
Fast growing trees makes big promises on their website, and totally delivers on them. I am more than a little impressed. And also in disbelief at how my shrubs sat in a box on a truck in this heat for over 5 days and showed up looking glorious.
I recently ordered a tree from what turned out to be an inferior company and it arrived with six of the eight branches broken and none left to replace it. I also ordered a honeycrisp tree and when I unboxed it, it looked like I had just brought the tree home from a nice Nursery.
I’m amazed at your packing. My 2 bushes arrived in great shape after 9 days in transit. When they 1st arrived in Salt Lake (where I live) they were then shipped to Texas ( for no apparent reason). After a few phone calls by me they were then shipped back to Salt Lake.
I was worried they would be damaged by the long trip but you prepped them well.
Diamond Spire Gardenia is a columnar gardenia from Southern Living Plants. This variety produces loads of re-blooming daisy-shaped flowers that will perfume your garden with that heavenly gardenia scent from spring through summer.
When this gardenia stops blooming, the unique spiraling structure of the foliage on its branches really takes the show. As an evergreen, this shrub will provide visual interest in your garden year-round, making it vital specimen planting in your landscape or a great candidate as a centerpiece of your container planting.
Diamond Spire grows to 4 ft. tall at maturity, making it a dwarf specimen among other gardenias, and the growth rate of the plant will give you ample time to prune it back into a tidy habit.
Hydrangea Bloomstruck macrophylla ‘PIIHM-II’ pp25,566 CPBRAF 3 gallon pot – The newest addition to the Endless Summer Collection. Bloom Struck is taking center stage with it’s prolific blooms and intensely colored flowers.
It is potent rebloomer with multi-colored blooms as flowers age. It will bloom in cold climates and has excellent heat tolerance. Features ruby red stems and glossy leaves.
Awful experience with these plants. They arrived small, broken and wilted. The only thing worse than watching expensive plants die is the customer service department making light of your experience. I bought a dormant Cherry Tree and have been so pleased with the specimen but do not purchase Hydrangea’s from this company.
They are small and it will be a good 5 years before they can even be considered worthy of the price being charged. They replaced 1 that completely died and it is struggling. This will be the 3rd review I have posted because they are not approved and people need to know not to waste their money.
So far so good. Shipping was fast and the packing of the plant was solid. I didn’t put it in the ground for a couple days and just watered it in its bucket as per the included instructions. It’s been planted for a little over a week now.
It’s healthy and the 2 or 3 little flowers have already started to turn blue. I water daily and am glad I paid up for the 3 gal, most mature plant. Would I recommend this plant to family and friends? I would.
I’m excited to see its growth rate andI think it’s gonna end up being a nice looking little shrub.
The Green Velvet Boxwood Shrub makes a rich impression with velvety foliage and rich evergreen color. Aptly named, the Green Velvet delivers a display of old growth in darker shades of green, and its new growth shines brightly in vivid shades of light green that adds texture, depth and dimension.
– Even better is that it grows in a natural sphere. They’re perfectly suited to enhance both casual and formal settings, and the Green Velvets are easygoing. with pest resistance, disease resistance and sturdy, adaptable growth that even stands up to deer.
As one of the first online nurseries in the world, Brighter Blooms offers a large, proven collection of high-quality plants.
I will admit I was a little skeptical on how these plants would look after being in a boxed shipped from North Carolina to Oregon. I was pleasantly surprised and very impressed. The plants were green, healthy, undamaged and beautiful.
We were replacing a hedge and were short 4 shrubs after purchasing all in stock from a local business. Thanks to Brighter Blooms the replacement is now complete. This is a highly recommended company in our book, and we will be using your services again.
The English Dwarf Boxwoods arrived in a timely manner well packaged. They were of decent size in a two gallon pot and were easy planting. Directions were included for us novice boxwood planters! Hopefully the line of dwarves over time will make a colorful nature border in our backyard.
Burning Bush is a longtime favorite for creating colorful hedges along walkways and property boundaries. This low-maintenance, reliable shrub grows 4-6 ft. tall and requires very little pruning or trimming.
Its leaves emerge emerald green in the spring and provide a tidy, attractive backdrop for perennials. In the fall, its foliage turns a show-stopping red and hangs on late into fall, often after many other trees and shrubs have gone bare.
Because it has corky bark with winged twigs, it’s a great shrub for providing winter interest. For the best color, grow Burning Bush in full sun. The Burning Bush Hedge is ideal for landscapers wanting to create hedgerows.
I always liked burning bushes, red is my favorite color! I bought this as part of a well designed area, that was 40 years ago when we moved into this house. This dwarf burning bush has been beautiful all this time.
It stayed dwarf, about 8 feet and always looked just like the picture. The other flowers got moved around or died but this bush is the crowning part of this area.
Ordered my five Burning Bush plants in June, growing area 7a in Oklahoma City. They arrived in good condition, and I planted, fertilized and watered according to direction. Two of the plants suffered early leaf browning and dried up and fell off.
leaving bare dry stalks. The other three plants appear normal an thriving here in November. Will update this review next Spring.
I ordered shrubs from two different mail-order nurseries. I received the first order, which resembled two 8″ twigs with roots the size of a ping-pong ball. The following day my burning bush order arrived from Spring Hill.
They were about 18″ tall, multi-branched and beautifully formed and just beginning to leaf out, with a root ball the size of a volley ball. I will never order from the other nursery again. Spring Hill proved themselves on my first order!.
Purple Daydream Loropetalum holds it rich dark purple color all year while bearing ribbon like pink flowers in the spring. Purple Daydream is smaller than its cousin the Purple Diamond and will reach mature size of two- to three-feet high by three- to four-feet wide.
Unlike other loropetalum Purple Daydream has a controlled growth habit that will not out grow your house like some other Loropetalum. Together with its controlled growth habit and deep rich year round foliage this is a must for any landscape.
When planting this Loropetalum, dig the hole twice as wide as the pot and mix rich garden soil in with your native soil, then leave the top of the root balla half inch above the ground level when filling the hole with soil.
Use a slow-release granular fertilizer in spring. Not guaranteed to be in bloom on arrival.
Shipping the product wasn’t a good idea. When i opened the boxes, the root balls had shaken loose from all dirt. I quickly gave all a drink of eater and got them planted quick ly. so not off to a good start in spite of the $117 spent.
I have never ordered plants online before but really needed these and they were out of stock at all of my local nurseries. The price was great so I decided to give it a try and I’m ecstatic that I did! They arrived faster than the date given, were carefully packed and in great condition!.
This shrub is extremely low maintenance and can fill a plethora of uses in landscaping and gardening. ️ The Wintergreen boxwood is known for its tolerance of cold weather compared to other boxwood varieties.
Even through cold weather The Wintergreen boxwood shrub remains lush, dense, and dark green.
Nice healthy plants. The only concern is that they were grown in Florida. I live in upstate NY, where it’s still cold conditions. Night’s are in the mid 25 deg’s. So I didn’t place them outside untill the weather gets warmer.
The Endless Summer Hydrangea series is acclaimed for its ability to produce blooms on both current and previous years growth. The blooms can be up to eight-inches in diameter and will bloom pink in alkaline soil or blue in acidic soil.
The addition of lime to the soil with raise the pH making the blooms pink, or the addition of garden sulfur will lower the pH changing the blooms to blue. They bloom in late spring until fall and are dormant from November to March.
Was very sceptic about ordering plants on-line. To many things could go wrong ! I was pleasantly surprised when I received my 8, 3 gallon hydrangea shrubs. They did not all come on the same day, but great care went into the packaging, and they were all healthy, watered, and did not lose one branch ! Thank you so much, and will be ordering again soon ! J.
This plant came with 9-10 branches, two of which already had blooms starting. No fungus or other diseases common to hydrangea. I was extremely pleased as I can sit the pot right on my porch. It’s nothing special (the pot) but it is blue! I am sitting home with a broken bone in my foot, and I had to have a plate put in, so you can imagine how much fun that is to a gardener this time of year.
And, of all places, Wal-Mart. I would recommend this to anyone.
(Last photo is of the size 1 potted plant just coming out of dormancy in April, size 2 pots are a bit fuller with more branches. ) A striking shrub that showcases brilliant red leaves in the fall, the Dwarf Burning Bush ( Euonymus alatus ‘Compacta’) is a medium-sized plant ideal for use as border hedging to create a natural privacy screen.

These tiny fruits attract a variety of birds, diversifying and enriching the ecosystem found in your backyard! Low-maintenance beauty An extremely hardy option for backyard gardening, the Dwarf Burning Bush requires very little upkeep.
Occasional pruning can help maintain a manicured shape, but the natural growth of this shrub results in a beautiful unkempt look that appeals to a more natural aesthetic. Versatile—great for border hedging, privacy screens or color contrast The robust nature of this shrub allows it to perform wonderfully as border hedging, creating a natural privacy screen.
It can also be used to create continuous, yearlong color balance, serving as a deep green backdrop for springtime bloomers while providing accent color in the fall.
We have always admired the beautiful deep red color of the Burning Bush every Autumn and finally ordered our very own. The Greenhouse had the best reviews so we chose them to order our shrub. I was a little concerned about planting in the Fall because we live in Northeast NY but the Company reassured me it would be fine as long as the ground wasn’t frozen.
They were wonderful to deal with and patiently answered all my questions. Our dwarf burning bush arrived in excellent condition and was packed extremely well. We followed the instructions and planted it the following day.
We cannot wait to see the new growth in the Spring!.
My 4 burning bush plants arrived in healthy condition. My very first purchase from Greenhouse. Very impressed! So impressed, I ordered a climbing rose. I am over the top delighted with the health and care you provide in your plants.
I am already seeing new growth and sparks of life in my beautiful plants. I will definitely recommend your company!.
I ordered a total of 6 burning bushes, along with many other plants from the Greenhouse. Packaging was exceptional and all plants are doing great except 2 of the burning bushes. I’m not sure exactly what happened with those 2 as they were planted the same way and in the same proximity of the others.
I purchased burning bushes, pink pompas grass, pink mulhany grass, raspberry bushes, and a pinky winky hibiscus. and was very impressed with the overall packaging and shipping. The problem is the 2 burning bushes were planted with intention of one day growing into a hedge.
but with the 2 that did not do well, I’m going to have to come up with an alternative.
A trouble-free plant that stands up to poor soil, heat, cold, drought and beyond, the Skip Laurel is perfect for carefree yet colorful, full growth. In fact, it will be 1 of the prettiest evergreens you’ve ever seen.
Especially since your Skip Laurel is grown and nurtured with care from day 1. When you order your tree from Brighter Blooms, you get a healthy tree upon arrival.
The shrubs were a birthday present for my daughter who was seeking a privacy hedge at her new home. While small to start, they were already showing new growth before she even got them planted. They are now happily planted, are healthy and should be providing the desired privacy in a few years while also attracting birds with their berries.
She is delighted to have these fast-growing shrubs that are less traditional than your typical privacy hedge.
The shrubs arrived quickly, well packed, and were a good size; however, they each have a spotty white film all over every leaf, like some kind of mineral deposit. It wipes off with some effort (but doesn’t wash off).
The new growth doesn’t have these white spots and they look healthy otherwise. One is already flowering, despite planting it in July! I planted them near trees which provide dappled shade nearly the entire day.
I received a diseased plant, according to the neighborhood gardener. My plant arrived all wilted with holes on most of the leaves. He said it is not a pest doing this to the leaves, but an actual disease.
I will keep watering it according to what the customer service person said. they mentioned it should revive after some time. I’m hoping that it will, but I am disappointed with the shrubs I received.
Give your outdoor space a lift with this Encore Azalea Autumn Twist. It re-blooms every year for continuous beauty in the spring, summer and fall. This azalea plant gives you large, 3 inch bi-colored white and purple flowers with the occasional solid purple flowers.
It is drought tolerant and grows over 4′ tall when mature. When planting it, dig the hole twice as wide as the pot and mix slightly acidic garden soil in with your native soil. Then leave the top of the root ball 1/2 inch above the ground level when filling the hole with soil.
This yard plant makes a thoughtful gift idea for a birthday, holiday or any other occasion. It is available in your choice of assorted sizes.
I have bought azaleas at Lowe’s, and from Amazon and by mail from Walmart. Walmart’s azaleas are 5 star-not pot-bound, with lots of new growth, and they come moist. Amazon’s-first they messed up the order, I had to pay shipping, they were dry, pot-bound and 2/10 on the alive scale.
Lowe’s were OK, but can’t compare to Walmart. No shipping on Walmart is you oder 2 or more, and all cost the same, no matter where you buy them (Encore).
Plants were packaged well. Upon receiving I immediately opened box and removed dry leaves. Then watered well and planted in my garden. I ordered 2 plants and one already had blooms and they opened up a few days later.
Introduced in 2010, the Baby Gem gives you small leaves and finely textured foliage for a well-curated appearance. New leaves with a cheery yellow tint that are nearly chartreuse emerge in spring. And because its foliage reaches the ground, it’s packed tightly in a dense, full-coverage silhouette.
As one of the first online nurseries in the world, Brighter Blooms offers a large, proven collection of high-quality plants.
5 out of the 6 Baby Gem Boxwoods had “little to no root system”. Maybe 1-1/2″ to 2″ root system. I seriously doubt they will live. The lady I spoke with didn’t really seem too concerned that I wasn’t pleased with the plants.
Said. let me know if they don’t live. It would have been better customer service for them to offer to replace the plants. Not sure I will purchase anything from Brighter Blooms going forward.
We ordered 13 Baby Gem Boxwood plants a little over 2 months ago. They arrived exactly on schedule. A couple of them had tipped over and looked squashed which worried us a little. But the instructions cautioned that this might happen and said to give them some time and they would snap out of it.
We planted them exactly according to instructions and now every single plant is looking great. We are glad we ordered the larger size as they look nice already and will probably only look better as the years go by.
We are very pleased with the service from Brighter Blooms and couldn’t be happier with our plants!.
The bottom half of the root system was dead and so densely packed that I had to cut it with shears. there wasn’t even any soil left in the bottom half of the pot. I don’t know if the shrubs will survive.
Almost every plant I have gotten from this company is terrible.
Intoxicating fragrance makes everyone want at least one gardenia in their garden or in a patio container. Gorgeous, glossy, leathery dark-green leaves with white flowers that turn creamy yellow as they age.
August Beauty is a prolific bloomer, with the aromatic flowers opening up to 2 to 3 across. An elegant flower for floral designs and decorations such as corsages, bouquets, and table arrangements. Outside, enjoy its perfume emanating from a flower bed beneath a living room window, near an entryway, or out in the yard as a formal hedge.
Needs rich, moist soil, using infrequent, deep soakings. Grows to 5 high and 4 wide. Needs rich, moist soil, using infrequent, deep soakings. Provide full to part sun. Flowers spring to summer. Hardy to Zone 8/20 degrees F.
I noticed when the two plants arrived that one was very wobbly in the planter and I wondered if someone had picked it up by the plant instead of the plant container. I went ahead and watered them both and a couple of days later transplanted them both into their new box planters.
Same plants, same containers, same soil mix, same spot on the patio. One is doing well the other has struggled the entire time and looks like it is on its last leg. I’m glad I bought the extra insurance, but I would rather have two healthy plants on my patio.
Cottage Hill Golden Euonymus is an evergreen shrub known for its high-impact variegated foliage because each glossy, oval-shaped leaf is a deep forest green with bright golden yellow edging that stands out from any distance.
With a dense habit that adapts well to shearing, this popular shrub can be pruned as needed to maintain the perfect size and shape for your landscape. Grows up to 6 feet tall with a 3 to 5 foot spread.
Please refer to the zone map above for recommended planting dates for your location. Includes Golden Euonymus in a 2. 5 Quart pot.
I wasn’t sure what I would get when I bought my plant online through Target but I’m glad i did! Shilling came earlier than expected and the plant was healthy and well protected in transport. I eventually put the plant in the ground and it’s doing great! Very happy for my purchase and would consider buying a plant from Target again.
I ordered one Euonymus Golden shrub early this spring. It was shipped fast & looked healthy. Because of a local drought, I had to water quite often to keep my new shrub looking healthy. I ordered a second Euonymus Golden shrub that was delivered & planted today.
It looks healthy & the same size as my spring purchase. Looking forward to see how they survive the upcoming Ohio winter. Very happy with the service from Target mail order & their relationship with Cottage Hill Nursery.
If it’s like most landscapes, you see lots of green. From the grass in your lawn to the leaves on your trees and shrubs, you probably have plenty of green. But you can use one simple design trick to brighten and refresh your entire landscape ‘– simply by adding variegated plants to break up the sea of green! And if you choose variegated plants that are also evergreen, you’ll enjoy the bonus of year-round color.
Our horticulturists recommend a versatile plant that is evergreen, variegated, and so easy to care for ‘– Golden Euonymus (Euonymus japonicus ‘Aureomarginatus’). Showy and Textural Foliage The foliage of Golden Euonymus forms a striking pattern.
Each richly colored green leaf features a brightly colored edging of cheerful golden-yellow. The leaves of Golden Euonymus grow up to 3 inches long with wide yellow margins! So, you will not have to squint to see the green-and-yellow variegation.
You’ll even notice a textural quality because the leaves are gently serrated near the tips. And the foliage is thick and lustrous, so it holds up during rainstorms without being damaged. An Evergreen with Year-Round Color When deciduous shrubs and trees shed their leaves in autumn and flowering perennials begin their winter’s nap, you can rely on Golden Euonymus to continue adding color to your landscape.
The color does not fade from season to season; it maintains the same vibrancy in the heat of summer as it does through a cold winter. So as many other plants in your landscape transition back and forth, depending on season, Golden Euonymus is a dependable evergreen that keeps its year-round coloration.
You may not even notice these flowers, which appear in late spring to early summer, because the foliage definitely takes center stage on these shrubs. But Golden Euonymus is different than other flowering shrubs because its spectacular color is dependent on its foliage, not its flowers.
This is a big plus compared to the short-blooming times of other shrubs that offer pretty color that’s only temporary. Bold Accent Plant Even if you planted only one Golden Euonymus, it would make an immediate impact statement in your landscape.
You can grow it front and center as an up-close focal point, or you can place it at a far-off spot in your landscape where you want to enjoy a pop of color in the distance. As a matter of consideration for scale, Golden Euonymus can potentially reach a height of 10 feet, although heights of 5 to 8 feet are often more common.
Magnificent Privacy Hedge As dramatic a statement as a single Golden Euonymus plant makes, can you even imagine what a row of them looks like? If you’ve wanted to plant a long privacy hedge, or a shorter privacy screen, you’ve probably considered the traditional plant choices that form a hedge as they grow.
But if you’d like your landscape to stand apart from all those that have cookie-cutter hedges of solid green, why not grow Golden Euonymus as a beautifully variegated alternative? Space individual plants 4 feet apart, and watch them grow together as the plants mature to form a privacy hedge that blocks the view behind it.
And unlike other hedging plants that have small leaves, Golden Euonymus makes an ideal hedge because of its thick leaves and its dense growth habit. Versatile Shrub for Your Border Garden A versatile trait of Golden Euonymus shrubs is their ability to tolerate partial shade.
In fact, if you live in the hotter regions of its perennial range across USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6 through 9, Golden Euonymus will actually prefer some afternoon shade. If you have a transitional area in your yard that receives part sun and part shade, Golden Euonymus performs like a champ! What comes to mind is a landscape-design effect called a “border garden.
” Originally, a border garden was designed as an area that was planted as a buffer between your yard and the border that defined your property line. But this design feature has been expanded to include the border in front of any home or garden structure, such as a fence, a garden wall, or the side of your house or garage.
Golden Euonymus is so versatile that it can grow in all these places, and it’s particularly lovely as the backdrop for smaller plants in your border garden. Foundation Plant with Character If you want a variegated evergreen that bumps up the look of your foundation planting, Golden Euonymus has you covered.
Stagger it between solid-green evergreen shrubs for a two-tone look or grow it as a single row of shrubs at your home’s foundation. It works best at foundations with windows that are higher off the ground because of its mature size or at the edges of your home where its height can grow naturally.
Purchased two. They area extremely small. I’d like to get an idea , on average, what the growth pattern will be. Your site picture is a far cry from what I received, 12 by 11 inches. If I was told how small they would be I would never have purchased them.
I received the plant and wondered about what its condition would be when it arrived. It was packaged very well. When I opened it up I was pleasantly surprised to see a very healthy shrub. I planted it immediately and it growing and thriving.
I will be ordering more plants from Brighter Blooms.
Limelight Hydrangea has an ever-changing appearance. When it first blooms in midsummer, it is covered with creamy white, dense flower panicles. Before long their color changes to a pale green. Then, as fall approaches, they take on yet another look by gradually turning pink.
The bushes are vigorous and upright and can reach a height of 13 feet tall with 8 to 12 inch long panicles or flowers. Limelight Hydrangea is great for mass plantings, mixed shrub borders or woodland gardens.
Limelight blooms on new wood, so it is important to prune in late fall to early spring to ensure increased flowering. Space plants approximately 6 to 10 feet apart for best results. Hardy in USDA zones 3 to 8.
IšverstiShow in original languageThe perfect plant. But must be pruned according to directions or you will be disappointed. Pruned correctly it is a beautiful, prolific bloomer. The center piece of many of my plantings.
Can be pruned into a tree, bush or long spiked plumes with 8′ flowers changing colors as the season progresses from cream, to lime (more nitrogen added to soil will really make the green POP} to rusty fed in fall.
Good cutting flowers all season and then dried blooms for fall.
