20 Best Hydrating Shampoo For Curly Hair (2023 Updated)

For years I have struggled with finding the right shampoo and conditioner for my curly hair. Products like Suave, TREsemmé, Pantene, and Aussie. As popular as these products are, they did not do my hair justice.

For instance, after I would wash my hair with these product lines, I would notice that my curls were left dehydrated and frizzy. Knowing that this was a huge issue I decided to take a different approach and do some research on what shampoos and conditioners were great for those with curly textured hair.

Once I came across the Coconut and Hibiscus Curl and Shine Shampoo and Conditioner from the Shea Moisture line, I knew I just had to give it a try because it said it contained natural and certified organic ingredients, controls frizz while adding brilliant shine, and formed to hydrate and protect your hair while reducing breakage.

I bought these two products at Walmart for approximately $20. The shampoo and conditioner are $9. 97 each. I know what some of you may be thinking. That is expensive for both a shampoo and conditioner but let me tell you it is worth it! Products like Suave, TREsemmé, Pantene, Aussie, and other popular shampoo and conditioners are cheaper because they are the most damaging.

They have sulfates and parabens which dries out your hair faster which leads to frizz and breakage. You can see why these products should be avoided for those with textured hair because are hair dries out faster than straight hair.

Therefore, it is best to stay away from them altogether. Go to your local drugstore and or any other places that sell hair products like Sallys and Ulta Beauty and give the Coconut and Hibiscus Curl and Shine Shampoo and Conditioner from Shea Moisture a try because you will not regret it.

I have very curly, fine, and dry hair. I also have a sensitive, flakey and itchy scalp. I only used this product a few times but each time it felt like I was getting an intense deep cleaning. My scalp felt tight and very dry after a day.

I don’t use too much styling products and I don’t heat style. I think it did so so for curl definition and my hair frizz issues. I currently have hair loss issues due to imbalanced hormones, but this didn’t make my hair loss issues worse.

As in it didn’t cause hair to fall out while I’m in the shower. Thankfully. It offers a great lather and my hair felt soft and somewhat hydrated after using this product. I used a deep conditioning mask from another brand and the the pattern conditioner with this shampoo.

I felt like I needed more steps or other products in my routine because of how dry my scalp and hair felt. This shampoo just fell short of my expectations. I’m doing a circuit of all the Sephora shampoos until I find what’s for me but I won’t be buying this again.

I won’t be recommending it because it didn’t work out for me personally. Good product. Just not for me.

I’m bi-racial with thick naturally curly hair and have tried a lot of different brands but would get the same disappointing result, dried out and feels like straw. I looked at this while shopping at Ulta and a sales person was next to me and told me that it works well for my 3B hair.

The sales person had tight curly hair. Since I work hard for my money I didn’t want to get a big one right away so I got a trial size to try to see how this works. I need it to be moisturizing and not too much or it will make my hair greasy.

When I tried it over the weekend, I could easily slip my fingers though my hair easily so I can get it everywhere. I wish I had something like this years ago. I use this and the medium conditioner and leave-in.

I know these products are generally meant for more coarse and beautifully curly hair, but I got the leave-in conditioner as a sample and fell in love with the scent. literally want everything in that patchouli-rose scent.

I decided to try out this shampoo (which also smells great) and the light conditioner, since I just have slightly wavy, thinner hair with a little damage from occasional bleaching. Man, my scalp is so finicky with weather changes and gets flaky and freaks out at the slightest change, but this shampoo/conditioner combo really helps with that.

I started trying to use up other shampoos and conditioners that I have before I re-purchase these and my scalp went right back to having a tantrum. Definitely worth a try! Seriously, though. the smell is 10/10.

I have an oily scalp with wavy waist length thick hair (many thin/low porosity strands). Color treated blonde. Problems: fluffy/poofy hair, greasy roots, dry ends, seborrheic dermatitis (on back of scalp) 1.

Product longevity: I only used the allotted card sample packet of 10 mL shampoo & 10 mL conditioner, which I was prepared to not be enough for my long hair. It was perfect! It went a long way, which was a pleasant surprise right off the bat.

2. Scent: the fragrance is pleasant, light but it hangs in there, even into the next day. The scent is unisex. It just smells very *clean,* like a fresh aquatic citrus. Although it’s subtle, it is noticeable enough to get a “ooh your hair smells good” when someone goes in for the hug.

3. Effectiveness: this cleaned my hair so well, without making it feel overly dried or stripped. I have a hard time getting a good product that works with my dermatitis, and actually calmed the flare up I was having.

Day 2 after wash, my head was so much less itchy than it was all week. My hair stayed clean and free of grease throughout all of day 1 and 2. Paired with the conditioner, my hair was smooth, shiny, soft (but not overly fluffy/full of poofy flyaways).

It felt hydrated and my ends looked good. I’ve been faithful to olaplex for the past 2 years, but think I may have a new fave. I noticed that with olaplex, my hair began getting greasy SO quickly. I was getting greasy same day as wash.

I still love it (that LATHER and scent tho!), but I think it’s too rich and moisture-focused for regular use given my oily scalp. My seborrheic dermatitis was getting worse and having intense flare ups.

Anyway, everyone’s hair is different, and can change in different seasons, so I really don’t think there’s a “one size fits all” hair product that will be best for everyone at all times. That being said, transitioning into warmer, humid spring/summer weather, I’m really pleased to have found this product.

It’ll be great for clean summer hair.

I feel like I must be using a completely different product from others. I actually bought the shampoo and conditioner because I thought they smelled so fantastic. I have fine, but dense, wavy hair that is about bra strap length.

I only wash my hair once a week because is isn’t particularly oily, but due to the length and fine strands, heavy products can weigh it down. My hair is incredibly prone to tangles. I bought the shampoo formulated for fine hair because I figured the strand thickness was more important than the density and texture.

Boy, was I wrong! I have noticed “volumizing” shampoos and conditioners in the past have caused my hair to be extra dry and tangly, but this isn’t listed as a volumizing shampoo. The shampoo leaves my hair incredibly tangled, even with the gentlest sudsing and scalp massage.

And it takes nearly 1/4 bottle of the conditioner to even come close to detangling the mess the shampoo has made. Even then, I feel like I’m literally ripping my hair out to get all the tangles and knots out, and my hair is still really dry.

Maybe I should have tried the shampoo/conditioner for medium hair, but I know these particular products were a complete waste and totally useless. I haven’t been impressed with the curl cream, wave spray, air dry foam, and especially not the rose hair oil, either.

The products smell fantastic, but they just don’t work for my hair.

I was so excited to use the product range even though its quite pricey. Seeing all good reviews made me think that this will probably help my hair get back to normal. However the results of using these products gave me a really bad reaction and a lot of dandruff which was really frustrating.

I couldn’t figure out what was wrong and I didn’t expect that the results would be really bad. The products made my hair nice and soft however my scalp was horrendous. It left me with a very dry itchy scalp and very flaky.

I am refraining from using it and I feel like I just wasted money paying so much for nothing. I have a very sensitive skin and this range just flared up contact dermatitis. It probably works for some but for me it’s actually a nightmare!.

I have long hair (almost touches my coxis; half of it is dyed because I’m trying to achieve a melted effect. from my natural dark brown to grey) So my ends need help to maintain its elasticity, moisture and prevent split ends.

I got everything from this brand that I was able to afford to start taking care of it. (Repair, protect and restorative products) It has passed 2 weeks and I’m planning on keep washing my hair every 3-4 days; I have experienced NO frizz as before, no tangle hair, it’s feels soft , smell great, more manageable.

I hope as I keep with the routine of using only Moroccanoil , that my hair will get ‘repair’ and be ready for my last color sesión 🤞🏼. I’m a costumer forever. Ps. Hopefully you can see from the pictures the texture of my hair (before and after) and Judge for yourself ☺️.

I used this for the first time a few years ago when I went blonde and my naturally Asian dark hair needed some extra TLC. I loved the smell and I loved how soft my hair felt. Since then, I’ve gone natural and went back to drugstore products, I mostly used OGX but I found that my hair would get oily really fast.

I would shower in the morning and by 5pm, my hair felt like it needed a wash again. So I went back to Moroccanoil, and it’s been phenomenal. I shampoo my hair every other day at most, sometimes I go two days before shampooing again but my hair smells so fresh even on the 2nd day of no shampoo.

I don’t use other products like dry shampoo or anything between shampoo days, I just rinse my hair with water to freshen it up. Also my hair just feels healthier, it feel bouncier and silkier. I find that drugstore shampoos tend to weigh my hair down.

I have curly naturally dry hair. It is also coloured and lately I have been swimming in the pool this summer quite frequently so my hair can get quite stripped and dry. This shampoo is so gentle on my hair and does not strip it from what little moisture it has.

It actually feels like it adds moisture whilst cleansing my hair at the same time. I’ve been using this shampoo for over ten years. Absolutely love it because it works for me.

This shampoo really works! I have just had chemotherapy and although I can’t claim that this shampoo stopped me from losing my hair altogether (the cold cap did that) this shampoo has definitely helped with the brittleness and dryness of the actual hair.

I have used KERASTASE Bain Satin 1 or 2 in tandem with the conditioner and/or mask for about 20 years. My son uses it on his chemically treated hair and it has stopped snapping off. This shampoo really does help with dryness and sensitised hair.

Hair Type: Virgin Fine strands, but a lot Wavy blend of 2A-2C Shoulder length Normal porosity? I have traits from both low/high, so I’m not sure anymore. Hair Concerns: Oily scalp w/dry ends Frizz – Oh, the frizz! Hates coconut oil and protein – my hair gets very brittle and destroyed I received two samples of the Love shampoo/conditioner when I purchased other products from their website and I was able to get about 3-4 uses of each.

One thing is I’m really not a fan of the smell. It’s like the typical strong floral scent, but too much like an actual flower. Besides the smell, it is a pretty creamy purple color and had a rich lather.

Definitely a lot more moisturizing compared to the Dede shampoo (review for that later). This shampoo didn’t really do too much for my frizz and I think it may have been a tad too heavy for my hair type.

If anything, I need to try this shampoo out with a different conditioner because the Love line used together weighed my hair down and flattened out my waves. My scalp was getting way more itchy than normal and I’m not sure which ingredient in the shampoo was causing that.

After I used different shampoos, the itch would stop so I knew it was being caused by this one. Overall, not too impressed with this shampoo and I will probably just stick with using the Oi line which my hair and scalp are responding well to! Due to the smell and the scalp itchiness, I’d give this like a 3.

This is the best shampoo I have ever used! I received a sample of it in my subscription box and was amazed at the fact that it had more then one use in it! The shampoo spread nicely which is why there was more then one use in it.

I have long hair too! It made my hair soft and shiny and healthy looking! It’s hard to do that with my dry, brittle hair. It is quite expensive but worth every penny and then some. I always purchase in bulk when I get my taxes so I will have enough for the entire year.

I highly reccomend this to anyone looking to truly fix thier hair!.

I love Davines Love shampoo and conditioner. It spreads and lathers easily and omg the fragrance is so good. Powdery, floral, musk? I don’t know, but it’s lovely, and when people hug me after I’ve used it, they say “omg you smell amazing.

” My hair is smoother and softer and so easy to style after using this line. I absolutely love it.

I am so pleased with this shampoo. For the first time, my scalp no longer itches! Also I found that the shampoo AND the conditioner when used together enhance my curls. My hair is fine, but I have a lot of it.

I do add a moisture, curl mist to this protocol to really define the curls after washing my hair, but cannot find a product that is safe per EWG and that works for my type of curly hair. Dear Attitude, Please make an EWG certified curly cream or mist for my type of hair and one for those with curlier/coily hair, as well.

First off I love Kerastase hair products. However I have wasted money accidentally purchasing shampoos by them containing sulfates so this shampoo made me happy and as an added bonus, this is formulated for curly hair! I have no idea what type of hair I have but it’s basically wavy and frizzy not coiled curly but curly wavy if that makes any sense? I have not used this shampoo without using the conditioner that goes along with it so I can’t speak to how this works without it but I feel like a hair care works best when they are paired with their are complementing product and for my hair the shampoo along side the conditioner works really well.

My hair is soft it smells great and unlike some sulfate free shampoos the stuff lathers is up really well in the shower! so for me this is a five-star product and I have nothing bad to say about it. I don’t use curl enhancing products to actually enhance my curls I use them to hydrate because I tend to blow dry my hair straight so again can’t speak to how well it’s curling my hair but I can tell you that my hair definitely feels more hydrated and the more hydrated your hair is the more your curls will bounce and shine and look pretty.

I did receive this shampoo as part of a promotion so it was free but these are my actual results it’s not like your product will be confiscated unless you give it a five star review lol.

I am in my mid forties, with hair down halfway down my thighs with ballayage. Hair has gt some greys, is fine-ish in texture with a clump at the crown that is coarse. Knots and breaks easily. I tried the keratase gel cream a few times.

It didn’t do anything on dry hair apart from smelling absolutely divine. I then tried to dampen the dry hair to see if that would work but my fingers felt sticky icky. I then tried it on damp hair a few times and let it naturally dry.

Scrunching it to get better curls. My hair simply looked like wurzel gummidge on a really really bad hair day on the 1st time on damp hair. You know the look like you’ve been through a tornado a couple of times.

Now when I put my hair in a bun it usually clumps together just below the neck like extinct creatures are harbouring in it somewhere. I did find that after I washed it 3rd time this didn’t happen, the hair was a little smoother to but fizzing was more than usual.

3rd time of application I got all the excess water out and applied on wet hair and again let it dry naturally. Results were better no grenade gone off disaster in the hair. Did the Scrunching as it was drying but I was left with more of a wavy look than curls, so maybe it relaxed my curls more than they should.

However it did make a difference to the breakage and falling out of my hair. Still went back to being frizzy after a few hours of application. Not as much knotting and clumping pre use. This didn’t work for me maybe it may work for others.

I will still be using it as it does have some benefits and see if there are any further benefits or results. I did have to use a lot of it due to the length of my hair. Everyone’s hair is different not everyone has the same hair texture etc as me, so it may work well for others.

I’ve asked a few friends to try it and it seems to work well on shorter hair styles.

I received a free sample of this to try and review. My hair has a curl when air-dried, so I was hoping this would be a better alternative to using gel and a diffuser for volume. I tried this three different ways.

I used this as an add-on to my dry hair that was curly first. It made my hair seem oily, so I definitely wouldn’t use it that way, even though the curls stayed. The second way I used it was adding it to damp hair and letting my hair air dry.

This actually loosened my curls and left them less defined, which I didn’t like. They did stay the same all day, and the smell was nice. No oily feeling and probably the best way of using it. The last way was using my diffuser after applying this to damp hair.

I lost almost all of the curl with this product in when I used the diffuser. I’d say if you add this to damp hair and let it airdry, it will give you the best results. I prefer the way my hair looks with a mousse more than this for sure.

It may work better only very curly hair.

I bought this along with the conditioner in the duo pack because I needed a new shampoo&condit after using Monday hair care for the longest time which ruined my hair completely. I had such bad hair loss and scalp irritation I was desperate for a decent product that wouldn’t break my bank.

So far I think I’m happy with this product? I bought the duo along with the healing oil which I use on my scalp and ends before bed the night before a wash and then double wash in the shower and let the conditioner sit.

After my double wash tho my hair feels almost stripped of moisture? But once I add the conditioner it re adds the moisture I’ve lost. What I like about this duo is the way it has brought curls and volume back into my hair once it’s dry.

I believe this works best with the healing oil and the verb oil as well. My hair is medium thickness and curly/wavy but I straighten it most days and it lasts about 3/4 days at most before I need to wash again.

I’m going to give this a fair shot and use the whole bottle and hopefully buy again!.

This product was so bad, I’m writing my first ever Ulta review. I was truly so excited about this shampoo/conditioner, but i’ve now been using it for 2-3 weeks and can easily say my hair has never felt worse.

I have long dirty blonde straight hair that’s fairly thick- this product manages to DRY it out, so badly that even my scalp started getting itchy and flaky (something that hasn’t happened to me in years).

When i let it air dry, it feels like my hair is hardening into a little shell. I thought maybe I was leaving product in, but now i scrub for so long trying to avoid the helmet head feeling, that it makes the dryness and scalp even worse.

On top of all that, because of how drying it is, my hair gets greasy FAST. like within 24 hours. It’s tangly, it’s greasy, it feels like the sahara, it’s truly awful. I set a countdown calendar in my phone for the day I get to go return this product.

The ghost oil is great, but save your money and your hair and avoid this like the plague.

I’ve been on the hunt for a shampoo that cleans my oily scalp with one wash and rinse, and doesn’t irritate my scalp. This is the one! My hair type is thin-to-medium, wavy, and super oily. I do have dandruff which this shampoo doesn’t address (nor does it claim to), but this doesn’t irritate my scalp or make it more itchy.

I was concerned that anything claiming to have an oil in it would never get my scalp clean, or give a lasting clean, but this is not a problem for whatever reason! It most likely doesn’t have as much oil as it’s claiming to; so if you need a shampoo to address dryness, this is probably not the best choice.

Just 2 minor concerns that might be annoying for others, but not a deal-breaker for me. First, you have to use a good dollop to be able to clean in one rinse cycle, which may mean you’re going to run out of shampoo sooner.

But so far this bottle is lasting me a long time, and worse case scenario I’d just buy the salon-size next. Second, if you’re not conditioning your hair, you may find it drying. Again, I don’t know why something claiming to have oil in it is so drying, but because I have an oily scalp I really couldn’t care less.

And I find it’s a non-issue if I use conditioner (which I do every time). So oily-scalp people out there, try this out! May be worth it :).

We have used this for some time and it’s always the same. We are now looking at changing to another shampoo for 4 people. It’s near to impossible every time to get the conditioner and shampoo from the bottom of the bottle, meaning with every bottle around 4-5 washes are wasted from the shampoo and definitely more from the conditioner.

If you have weak wrists or arthritis or any pain in your hands or arms at all, it’s impossible to squeeze the bottle even when half full to get the product out. When the bottles are full, it’s still very difficult.

The plastic is very tough, not malleable or pliable and challenging. It’s a shame because if you can get into the bottles, or rather get the products out of them, the shampoo and conditioner are great.

I am considering cutting open the bottles half way (which would take mighty hand strength) and transferring to a jar to place in the shower but all in all will end up moving to and settling on a different brand as soon as we can.

I bought this because it was recommended as an option for the curly girl method if you don’t want to completely give up using shampoo. I tried using cleansing conditioner and just found that my hair never felt clean.

I have fine, wavy 2A hair that gets greasy very quickly even though I’ve been trying to only wash my hair every 2-3 days or so for months now. I like that this shampoo still lathers because I have an OCD thing about getting a good lather in my hair (I feel like its not actually getting clean unless it lathers!) and it smells amazing, like light and sweet coconut.

A lot of other sulfate free shampoos I’ve tried either don’t lather at all or just barely. This bottle has also lasted me a few months because I have barely shoulder-length hair and only use this once or twice a week.

My hair feels clean and soft after using this. I also love that OGX is cruelty free and also very affordable! I would definitely recommend this shampoo and OGX products in general!.

I am no stranger to sulfate free shampoos but none of the products I’ve tried in the past have worked as well as the Curl Moisturizing Shampoo. Even though the shampoo is sulfate free, it lathers up nicely and deeply cleanses without stripping my hair.

I usually alternate between a deeply moisturizing shampoo and a shampoo specifically designed for curly hair but Curl Moisturizing Shampoo meets all of my hair’s needs. I’ve been using the shampoo together with the conditioner from the same line and my hair has never looked better! Ive always struggled with dry ends and knots.
