It may feel like the end of the world when everyone else in your household is excited about a trip to the beach and you feel as if you’re living through a nightmare. The truth is that you may not ever like the surf and sand but, sometimes, we make sacrifices for our families. If you find yourself in this situation over the summer, here are some suggestions for making the most of the day.

Plan for the Sand

Some people really love the feeling of walking along a sandy beach but, unfortunately, the sand rarely stays where it belongs. Instead, it sticks to your body or flies through the air and quickly turns into a nuisance. Pack some baby powder to rub on sandy skin and watch it fall away. Lay on a fitted sheet instead of a beach blanket and then use heavy items (such as a cooler) to prop up the corners to keep sand out of your sanctuary.

Pack the Right Food

If you’re going to the beach, you need to plan your food accordingly. It will probably be hot and sticky and you won’t have anywhere to wash your hands. Even with a great cooler, this is probably not the best time to pack dairy products. Instead, stick with food that doesn’t need to be refrigerated, can be eaten without utensils and won’t be too heavy on everyone’s stomachs. Make sure you pack plenty of water to rehydrate after being out in the sun for hours. Oh, and don’t forget wipes and/or hand sanitizer!

Anticipate Spills

If you’re going to be by the waterfront, you should expect that your things could get wet. Rather than make this a stressful situation, accept it and plan accordingly. There’s no need to break the bank and get fancy, either. Give each person a large resealable sandwich bag to protect items such as smartphones, cash and books. Consider leaving larger devices, such as laptops, at home where they will be safe.

Sun Protection

It’s amazing but many people go to the beach without a good way to protect themselves from the sun and heat. In addition to packing sunscreen of an appropriate SPF strength, consider taking a beach umbrella to create your own shady area. If you want even more protection (especially, if you are traveling with infants), check out a beach shelter made of breathable nylon.

Manage Your Expectations

This goes for any trip you’re dreading! One of the worst things we can do to ourselves is build something up in our minds to such unrealistic proportions that when the real things happens, we are disappointed. On the flip side, we need to be careful not to have fatalistic thinking and assume that some upcoming event is going to be the worst thing that has ever happened to us. Try to see things in a more neutral way so that you haven’t already formed an opinion about it before it has even happened. It will help improve your attitude drastically.

You don’t have to become a beach bum but, with some planning and a decent attitude, you can make it more bearable and enjoyable for the entire family.
