October 16, 2018

The big news this week is that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are expecting their first baby! Kensington Palace shared the joyful news by releasing the following statement on Twitter:

“Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019.”

They followed up with this sweet tweet:

“Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.”

According to a royal source, the Duchess has already had her 12-week ultrasound screening and is “feeling well.” That’s fantastic news!

The world watched when Harry and Meghan got married on May 19, 2018. The couple met on a blind date sometime around July 2016 and took their relationship public in October of that same year.

Bridging the Cultural Gap

Meghan and Harry’s relationship has already broadened the diversity within the royal family. Born in the United States, much was made of the British prince choosing an American bride. Adding to that, of course, is the fact that Meghan is biracial—her mother, Doria Ragland, is African-American and her father, Thomas Markle, is caucasian.

When Meghan and Harry were dating, the prince was forced to confront the racism being directed at his then-girlfriend. Since he’s normally a rather private person, many were shocked by the strongly-worded statement he released through Kensington Palace, slamming the attacks directed at his love interest.

Of course, there is also the fact that Queen Elizabeth II is a relative of Queen Charlotte, “wife of the English King George III (1738-1820), was directly descended from Margarita de Castro y Sousa, a black branch of the Portuguese Royal House.” Prince Harry’s grandmother even referred to her Asian and African heritage following her Coronation.

An Exciting Time

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have just embarked on their first royal tour as a married couple. Currently, in Australia, the pair intend to continue on to Tonga and Fiji, two areas that the CDC has recommended pregnant women avoid due to the risk of Zika.

The virus, which is carried by mosquitoes, has been linked to serious medical conditions, such as microcephaly, in fetuses exposed to it. The couple reportedly sought advice and will not change their travel plans. Undoubtedly, the people they will encounter throughout the Commonwealth will be excited to congratulate them on the pregnancy.

Prince William and Kate, along with the rest of the royal family, are reportedly “delighted” by the baby news. Meghan’s mom released her own statement saying, “Ms. Ragland is very happy about this lovely news and she looks forward to welcoming her first grandchild.”

It won’t be long, of course, until Meghan’s father and sister, Samantha, weigh in on the pregnancy. Despite being estranged from the Duchess, they’ve felt the need to publicly comment and humiliate heronn a regular basis. Hopefully, they can show some restraint this time and just let her enjoy this happy moment.

Congratulations to Meghan and Harry!
