How to Choose the Best Planner for the New Year
October 20, 2017
The new year is coming, which means it’s almost time to choose a new planner. I’m one of those people who needs a paper planner on my desk to stay organized. If it’s a digital planner on my computer, I forget about it and it never gets used. Over the years I’ve used quite a few different styles of desk planners. Each has pros and cons depending on what you’re looking for. Here are a few tips to consider when choosing a planner for the new year.
Planners are available in a variety of different sizes—from pocket-size that you can easily store in your bag to 8 1/2″ x 11″ size to keep on your desk. Consider the space you have available and whether or not you’ll need to bring your planner with you when you leave home. A smaller planner is more portable, while a larger planner has the advantage of lots of space for appointments and notes.
Do you want to be able to lay your planner flat on your desk? Or fold it open so that only half of it shows at a time? Will you need a band to keep it closed when you take it with you? Different planners have different binding styles. I prefer a spiral bind that allows me to lay it flat, fold it in half, or close it completely with a band.
What kind of writing implement will you be using to write in your planner? Some people simply write in appointments with a pencil or a ballpoint pen. Others prefer to color, doodle, and draw with markers and gel pens. If you’ll be using your planner as an artistic outlet, make sure it has heavy paper. I love my Erin Condren Life Planner because it has nice thick paper I can doodle on.
If you want to be able to decorate your planner, consider what types of supplies are available. Choosing a planner like an Erin Condren Life Planner or a Happy Planner that have standard decorating packs means that you’ll have stickers, bars, page flags and more that fit in the boxes perfectly. If you go with another style of planner, accessories may not fit as well..
