It’s awards season, y’all! Did you watch the 2019 American Music Awards last night? It was an incredible night filled with amazing performances by some of the industry’s most prominent leading ladies. Awards shows don’t feel as fun and climactic as they used to, but the AMAs brought the heat anyway!

Toni Braxton was on the AMA stage for the first time in 25 years and said it felt “great.” Pregnant Jenna Dewan was spotted whispering something to Brad Goreski and had to later deny shading Camila Cabello. It was a night filled with all kinds of drama—both good and bad!

Let’s Talk About Selena

Selena Gomez opened the show with a shaky but emotional performance of her two newest hits, “Lose You To Love Me” and “Look at Her Now.” Sporting some new ink, she took to the stage and it was clear that she was nervous. While some took to Twitter to complain about her singing, most outlets praised her bravery.

It’s pretty obvious that her songs are about healing from her relationship with Justin Bieber, so it took some guts to get up there knowing he’s watching. There were also reports that she suffered a lupus flare-up and panic attack right before the performance (but we have NO idea if that’s true). Good thing she had pals like Taylor Swift and Halsey cheering her on!

Lizzo Debuts “Jerome”

You had to know that Lizzo was gonna bring it to the AMAs. She’s had such a breakout year, so she couldn’t disappoint! Wearing a stunning fuschia, off-the-shoulder, floor-length gown, the 31-year-old performed her new single “Jerome” for the first time and she absolutely rocked that stage.

She’s known for her relatable, inspiring lyrics, so we couldn’t have been surprised when she crooned, “Who told you that you stood a chance with this royalty? You’re so sweet, bless your heart … Jerome, take your ass home.” She might have ended her performance singing on her knees, but she brought the crowd to their feet!

Taylor Swift is the Artist of the Decade

In a truly emotional moment, amid some seriously horrendous drama with her former record label, the legendary Carole King presented the Artist of the Decade award to Taylor Swift. The 29-year-old entertainer was starstruck and took a moment to recognize the singer-songwriter’s accomplishments and impact on her own life.

“I cannot believe that it’s Carole King who gave me this award,” Swift said. “My parents are here tonight. They would listen to Tapestry and all your other records when they were in high school, and then they took those records, packed them in boxes and took them to college with them. Then, when they met and they got their own house they took those records and brought them there, and then when they had my brother and I, they played those records for us.”

Moments before accepting her award, Swift performed a medley of her hits including “The Man,” “Love Story,” “I Knew You Were Trouble,” “Blank Space,” “Shake It Off” (Camila Cabello and Halsey joined her onstage!), then her latest hit “Lover.”

Swift holds the record for the most AMA wins of any female artist in history, and she has claimed more wins this decade than any other performer. Wow! On top of that, on Sunday, she broke Michael Jackson’s record of 24 AMA wins! Clearly, she’s doing something right. We’re excited to see what she’s got planned for the roaring 20s (the 2020s, that is!).
