Most of the phonetics will use English sounds, naturally, because the book is written in English. It is very good when you are very fluent in English. Otherwise I would recommend a book in your native language.
Probably it would make more sense for the phonetics.
The book is great; includes all grammar rules, pronunciation and lots of vocabulary. My only concern is that it does not come with a CD! I really need to listen the words in order to learn pronunciation.

Common sense terms and good annunciation which is repeated twice. I find this very helpful. If you are learning any language for the first time, it’s incredibly difficult to understand anything at normal conversation speed, you have to start slow and listen over and over as well as try to speak.
yep. I really got what I paid for. Audio alone does not give you a great learning experience. If it had visuals as well then maybe it would be better. Plus the idiot that kept emailing me had no brains and was completely unhelpful and Id never deal with those idiots ever again.
Compared to other products Ive found this one doesn’t even come close to being remotely useful. Don’t waste your money or your time, and definitely don’t email them to complain that the posting is taking too long because the idiot at the other end gets upset and smarmy.
You have to be pretty switched on to be able to pick up the language from this book and CD set. If you are totally clueless about the language, it all seems like gibberish. You will basically be only picking up French translations of English words.
Piecing everything into a sentence would be impossible. Tried to learn French using this but wasn’t really successful, especially since the French used in Montreal seems different to the French used in this book.
We needed a mechanic and they only spoke French. we couldn’t explain what we needed, and in the end, we just said “help help” in French to get the mechanic to come to our aid. Perhaps if you went over and over and over the book and CDs, something might sink in.
It definitely works better if there’s someone to practice with you. Not a bad starter kit for beginners.

I found this a very useful resource for someone trying to learn French and to test out how they are going. One learns words, phrases etc but to then read a story puts the learning into perspective. It is well set out and supportive of a beginner’s efforts.
This book is great for the beginner as it tells you at the start how best to utilise it so that you feel that you are actually learning how to understand French. The stories are in quite basic French, but when you’re just beginning to learn a language that’s exactly what you want.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to help expand their basic understanding of French.
Everything about it is good. I would recommend it to people that are on the last stage of beginners level. Its also like a comprehension book-At the end of each chapter there is a couple of questions to see if youve understood the text.
This title deals with everyday situations in which children may find themselves while abroad. French grammar is clearly explained and puzzles provide plenty of practice. This title is part of a series providing a thorough grounding in useful, basic foreign language skills.
I have the Spanish edition of this series, which I purchased from a school book fair, so I was expecting the same product. The book is the same format (which is good & easy to read & use). However, my Spanish book came with a CD.
I should have read the description more carefully – NO CD with this book. Will keep it, but disappointed about no CD for correct pronunciation.
Easy to follow with clear illustrations, and lots of them. You would be able make yourself understood with no difficulty. Simple, day-to-day situations that a tourist might encounter with pronunciation charts at the back.

If you dont feel confident with vocabulary or pronunciation it is easy to sit quietly in a French class and make yourself small. This course gives confidence early on, allowing a child to be able to say useful sentences in French and participate actively in class.
Ive used these courses in several languages myself, and really think they are outstanding, especially when combined with other learning experiences such as school or evening classes, or visits to the country.
Like playing the piano, you need a degree of fluency for a language to be useful and for that you need confidence. This course gives confidence in bucketfuls.
Having learned some french at school ( donkeys years ago) I was keen to learn how to speak more fluently, making sentences instead of learning whether items were masculine or feminine. This set of cds certainly get one moving on quicker in one week of listening – to and from work in the car – than 4 years of disinterest in school.
It is clear, each word builds to make sentences, I have listened to the first cd over again until Im sure I know the words. Very good method of learning, Michel Thomas has a easy way of teaching and explains the pronunciation – I would recommend this set of cds.
Good set of CDs for learning French. For someone my age, it is a little confusing in that not all are audio CDs – there are some discs that are designed to work on a PC. Since I do not have a PC, they cannot be used.
Also, the titles of CDs can be confusing as well. Having said that, the first CDs that I have listened to are good and original ones by Michel Thomas. Later, it is his method that is used by another presenter, which I shall have to get to before I can comment upon them!.

12 themed chapters are broken down into 15-minute daily lessons, spanning a range of practical themes, from socialising to doing business. Each lesson combines French vocabulary and grammar essentials with full-colour photographs for a user-friendly, accessible language guide.
So I downloaded the free app that has the audio on it that goes with the text, but the first section won’t play. Fortunately, I already know how to greet people in French, but for newbies, this would be disappointing and frustrating.
