A router is a device that forwards data packets between computer networks. Routers perform the traffic directing functions on the Internet. A data packet is typically forwarded from one router to another router through the networks that constitute the internetwork until it reaches its destination node.
A router is connected to two or more data lines from different networks. When a data packet comes in on one of the lines, the router reads the network address information in the packet to determine the ultimate destination.
Then, using information in its routing table or routing policy, it directs the packet to the next network on its journey.
The primary function of a router is to connect multiple networks and forward packets between them. A router has two types of ports: WAN (wide area network) and LAN (local area network). WAN ports are used to connect the router to the Internet, while LAN ports are used to connect the router to computers and other devices on your local network.
When you connect a router to your modem, the router creates a local network. All of the devices on your local network can communicate with each other, and they can also access the Internet through the router.
If you have a large home or office, you may need a router that covers a larger area. For example, the Linksys AC5400 Tri Band Wireless Router is designed for homes and offices that are up to 3,000 square feet.

My old Netgear dual-band router had seen better days and so I decided to give the R8000P a go. The initial highlight of the features for me was beam forming, which helped me overcome WiFi dead zones in my home.
Then a few other features stood out and impressed me. The ability to check the speed at the front end of my network, the improved logging with attack identifications, and the level of network control and information that’s available from within the Nighthawk app.
On top of those things, I was also pleased to see the same familiar web interface that I prefer to use while implementing more complex router configurations such as subnetting, vlans, address reservations, and internet/WiFi scheduling.
I’m still in the process of testing Netgear Armor during the free month trial that was offered, but I can say that I already like it and will be purchasing a full year subscription. Previously, I was paying for a Fing subscription to analyze my network and help to find/track vulnerabilities and issues.
But now, my Nighthawk has the same abilities built into Netgear Armor. One feature that I would still like to see is the ability to receive notifications when a device goes offline. The Nighthawk app also has the option of utilizing Circle for parental controls, which includes managing your child’s internet usage, device time and content restrictions.
Something I plan to work with more moving forward. Overall, a Nighthawk router is a worthwhile upgrade and has convinced me to spend more on my home networking in the future. The features and performance differences are honestly worth it.
I recently upgraded my wifi from a Medialink router to the Netgear. I began to notice a definite drop in my internet speed. When I should be getting 200mbps I was only getting about 30mbps. I had the cable techs come and check my lines and they said everything was good to go.
Having that information led me to believe it was my wifi. I ordered my Netgear that day and it arrived 2 days later. After setting it up and downloading the app, I checked my speed. I was now getting 230mbps and the coverage in my 5,000 sqft home was way beyond expectations.
This wifi router sits in my basement office and can hit without loss of strength to my top floor. I would encourage everyone to consider the Netgear Nighthawk AC4000 as an upgrade or new router.
I wish I could leave negative stars! I purchased this product less than a year ago, and purchased a Netgear modem at the same time. I paid extra for the extended tech support. I do not have a cell signal at my house and use wifi calling.
My wifi would buffer and cut off every day throughout the day, and I found out a few weeks ago that the cause is a DoS attack on my router. It’s not my modem, that’s been verified. After countless calls and hours on the phone, changing settings, resetting to factory settings and a replacement router that was supposed to be new but was used and has the same issues, I am still stuck with a piece of junk, a technical support department that has taken over a week to find out if a new product is in the warehouse to replace my current product, no reliable wifi and nobody that seems to know what is happening (is this a firmware issue, allowing DoS attacks?) or how to resolve this issue.
I’ve even tried calling the corp office and left a message on the receptionist voicemail, spoken with a sales rep for a different product, nobody knows how to get this taken care of and nobody really cares to look into this issue.
I regret buying this product and have zero faith in this company and their circus.
Coverage up to 1,500 sq. ft. for 20 devices Fast AX1800 Gigabit speed with WiFi 6 technology for uninterrupted streaming, HD video gaming, and web conferencing Connects to your existing cable modem and replaces your WiFi router.
Reliable wifi is more important than ever with security cameras, home entertainment, etc. We have 23 devices to date and my older wifi mesh system required constant reboots and speeds weren’t up to par in nodes.
Wifi 6 allows much faster throughput with wifi 6 devices. I’m connecting in man cave and master bath at 470mbps with my iphone 13. Easy set up, great range, and reliability are strengths of this router.
You can spend much more and get much less if you aren’t careful. 4 Ethernet ports come in handy also. There is no substitute for some knowledge on how wifi needs to be set up depending on specific devices.
It’s always better to hardwire with Ethernet if possible but sometimes not possible depending on structure. It would be very difficult to get a better performing router at this price point, especially if you have compatible wifi 6 devices.
I have a 400 mbps spectrum internet plan as an fyi. With my amplifi 3 station system I replaced I had slow speeds in areas I used mesh points and had to continuously reboot. I’m getting faster speeds and better reliability with this wifi 6 router.
I had invested 300 in old system and got 3 years out of that system. This router is the best on market in my opinion (at this price) by today’s standards. It also allows excellent expansion if needed.
I would start with 1 and see if your content with performance. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Range is also excellent with external antennas. Our home is 2200 square foot ranch and this does a great job inside and outside with my wifi 6 phone.
Just got this router. Setting it up was a challenge: The app I downloaded asked me to scan a QR code that did not exist. So I went with the manual setup choice. The app insisted that I be on the network.
It should have specified that I need to connect to the “Netgear” wi-fi that appeared. I figured that I should connect to it, but it asked for a password. The minimal amount of documentation (simply a large card) did not have it.
The documentation and the app suggest that the user look online to documentation and videos. However, I have no internet connection while I am setting it up! Finally, I asked a friend to bring his smartphone, He had exhausted his data allowance, so we were only able to go online for a few seconds to find a helpline buried deep – probably deliberately – in the Netgear sight.
Called the helpline and a tech confined that I need to connect to the Netgear wi-fi that appears. And the password is under the router! So a setup that could have been only ten minutes cost me three hours! Netgear, get your act together: 1- Put a QR on the modem if you are calling one.
Netgear never disappoints. In this case, we opened a new business and had the cable company install their business service, including WiFi. When we learned that we could not create guest access using their router, I promptly returned it and purchased a smaller, mesh router.
It was terrible. Settings were very limited. Only one ethernet port. Range was dubious and it dropped the signal. So, back it went and I just spent a little more money and got the Netgear. Had it installed in just a short time, with everything set as we needed and wanted, including guest access.
All speed test numbers went up. Just brilliant. Only downside is it comes with add-on services, like a free trial of a security package, that they push hard for you to subscribe to. Otherwise, love it.
Highly recommend the hardware for it’s function and the setup is straightforward.

I bought the ASUS AX3000 to replace the single-band, WiFi 4 router that is built into my AT&T modem. There are simply too many 2. 4GHz networks bleeding over into our house from the neighbors, and the AT&T router is too weak to get the full circuit bandwidth anywhere beyond about 10 feet from it.
The AX3000 is incredibly easy to set up. Before starting, I Googled how to shut off the built-in wifi radio and put the AT&T modem/router into pass-through mode. The ASUS router app is really nice, but I preferred using the on-board interface to set things up by wiring in our desktop PC.
I set up both 2. 4GHz and 5GHz networks using different SSID’s so that I could tell them apart. (I am not a fan of the “Smart Connect” feature that uses a single SSID and can move devices between 2. 4GHz and 5GHz to try to optimize range and speed.
) Two devices in the house only support 2. 4GHz, but the rest are all on the 5GHz network, including iPhones running WiFi 6 and a variety of devices including Apple TVs and Roku sticks using WiFi 5. Using a speedtest app on my iPhone 12, I then methodically checked every room in the house before connecting all the other devices.
We have a 3000 sq foot, two-story home with another 1000 sq ft in the unfinished basement. The AX3000 sits in the loft near the center of the second floor (great central location). The results? I got the full bandwidth of our internet circuit in every room of the house and in the basement, despite the signal strength sometimes being as low as 35%! This router has great features, a good user interface and a nice companion app.
But it’s the combination of WiFi 6 and other advanced tech that makes its performance shine. I have even noticed my Chromebook getting better battery life now that it can operate on 802. 11ac (WiFi 5) along with a stronger signal.
The AX3000 is not the cheapest home router, but if you need range, throughput, and the ability to support a fleet of modern devices, it is a great investment.
So, decided to cut the cable BUT use some of the money to subscribe to a VPN. The VPN company stated the ISP router would not be adaptable unless I did a bunch of tech stuff like flash it. I can build PCs, I can do very basic things and when shown or told I can pretty much make anything work.
Chose Asus because I like their product, just built a PC with an Asus mobo (Z490 ROG Strix E) and an Asus monitor (PA278) This router is supposed to work well with the VPN company I chose. First upon the simple (and it is simple) set-up, I received no signal from the modem to the router.
Called Asus and they helped me get a signal. I was willing to put that down as perhaps I made a mistake. Tried to install the VPN and when VPN was activated a loss of internet on the PC but not the 2 Rokus.
Contacted the VPN company who worked on it from their end and couldn’t find an issue. Contacted Asus again and again, they helped but when the VPN was on the PC was offline EVEN hardwired into the router.
Had a professional come in to set up the network. He did but VPN drops download from 200+MBPS – >50. He told me to contact the VPN company again. they had me run some configs and nothing. I would call again, but and I know it is something that companies do to keep prices down, but when I can’t understand a single word the phone help is saying (because I can’t be online if working on the internet with possible outages, due to the working on it.
) So, I won’t call them, asking them to repeat and talk slower makes me feel embarrassed. I rarely complain about the telephone outsources because it is what it is, but Asus’ by far the worst. So, while it FINALLY, gets me signals to everything I need the fact that a hardwired PC’s download speed drops 75% is frustrating and I would return it but with the market the way it is with stock on shelves down (bought the last one) and the need for one that handles wifi6 AND VPN there may not be anything else available.
It breaks my heart to have to write this review because as I stated I truly like Asus products.
My previous router was a Netgear RangeMax which gave good service for 12 years until the 2. 4 GHZ radio gave up the ghost. After reading nightmare reviews for routers from many top manufacturers, I purchased this Asus model based on its great reviews.
My first impressions are that this is an outstanding router. To begin, setup literally could not have been easier. Connected it to my cable modem, powered it on, and completed the setup in five minutes via the mobile app.
It was not necessary to update network adapter drivers on any of my PCs. Range is great – I get excellent connectivity from anywhere in my 1550 sq ft home. This includes two smart TVs, two wireless printers, two PCs, smartphones, wireless security with multiple cameras, and wifi connected lighting in multiple rooms.
The app is the crown jewel. The interface is intuitive and fun to use. Using it, I can see real-time traffic, know every device connected to the network – and identify and label them. The best way to do this when their identity is not clear is grab the MAC address from the device label or from the app associated with the device (like wifi lighting) and match it to the MAC address given for the mystery device by the Asus app.
The app reports connection quality for every online device so no need to use a wifi mapper. I am very satisfied with this purchase and would highly recommend this router for anyone with a network environment similar to my own.
Wi-Fi 6 (802. 11ax), Up to 2976 Mb/s Throughput, 2. 4 GHz / 5 GHz Dual-Band, Supports 160 MHz Channel, 2 x Gigabit Ethernet LAN / WAN Ports, Up to 1500 Square Foot Coverage, Works with Amazon Alexa, Works as Smart Home Hub, Supports eero App Cover your home with fast and reliable Wi-Fi connectivity with the white eero 6+ AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Dual-Band Gigabit Mesh System.
This 802. 11ax mesh Wi-Fi router takes advantage of the 160 MHz channel on the 5 GHz band to boost its bandwidth to 2402 Mb/s. With the 2. 4 GHz frequency providing 574 Mb/s you’ll have a total combined bandwidth of 2976 Mb/s for smooth video streaming online gaming and video chat experiences in addition to supporting multiple smart devices.
Featuring two auto-sensing Gigabit Ethernet WAN/LAN ports this module may be configured as a mesh Wi-Fi router or as a satellite providing up to 1500 square feet of coverage. You can further expand Wi-Fi coverage by adding compatible eero 6+ devices to the mesh network providing seamless connectivity as you move across your home.
The eero 6+ also works as a smart home hub with support for over 75 connected devices allowing you to control Thread and Zigbee devices with your voice via Amazon Alexa enabled devices. You can also quickly configure manage and monitor your network using the eero app for iOS and Android devices.
The Eero 6+ AX-3000 is a 3 pack, dual band mesh wifi 6 system that is easy to set up, fast, and provides excellent range capable of handling at least a 3000 square foot house. Set up and control of the system is done entirely through an app downloaded to your Iphone or Android phone.
In my case, it was an Iphone. Set up allows you to keep the SSID and password from your previous network which had been a Velop tri band mesh system. I found this tremendously helpful since all of the 25 or so devices that I have immediately recognized the new network without additional configuration.
The first of the 3 pack devices is connected to your cable modem, etc. and is configured during the initial setup. The additional 2 devices can be configured during initial set up or any time later through the app.
I ended up using only 2 of the 3 pack devices since the 3rd one would have been overkill for my 2200 square foot house unless I wanted to extend the network deep into the backyard or my neighbor’s yard.
As I mention, I previously had a two pack, tri band Velop mesh system. This system had served me well for several years, however, I have recently acquired several wifi 6 devices and the Velop system was not wifi 6.
I have about 25 devices on my system including 4 HDTVs which I constantly stream. In actual operation, the eero system felt very quick and no buffering occurred. Range was also excellent exceeding my previous Velop system.
I have 1 gigabyte per second internet coming into the house. About 20 feet from the router and in the same room as the router, I was able to achieve about 900mbps on my laptop compared to about 750mbps with the previous Velop system.
A story below the router and through 3 walls, I achieved around 250mbps compared to 200mbps with the previous system. I you are a heavy user of video or other data intensive devices and want a network that is easy to set up, fast, and with great range, I highly recommend the Eero 6+ AX3000.
When I stopped renting my modem/Wi-Fi router from the cable company I chose a stand-alone modem and Wi-Fi router. I started with a single original eero unit and it had better coverage of my home than the cable company combo unit as the salesman had promised.
I had powerline units to repeaters all over the house with the cable company unit and when I had the single eero unit. One at a time I added additional eero units until I had 5 to cover most of my 5000 square foot H shaped home.
I was finally rid of the troublesome wireline units with repeaters. My home is difficult for radio signals because of its shape, a number of interior brick walls, metal cabinets with metal backsplashes in three rooms.
I just replaced the 5 original eero units with a 3 pack of eero 6+ units. Throughout the the parts of the house we spend the most time in we get the same fast (250-300 MBps) that we get in our den a few feet from the modem and base eero unit.
The 2 satellite eero units are in place mostly because our TIVO-Mini units don’t work well with Wi-Fi. The rooms with the satellite eero units get an adequate Wi-Fi signal for most of our needs without the satellites but being able to use a network cable to the Tivo-Minis allows us to flawlessly stream HD and 4K television.
The setup was quick and easy. I already had the app on my phone. I deleted the old network from the app and unplugged the old units. The app gives clear instructions that were simple to follow. The new network was up and running in no time.
The one thing I would do differently is keep the name and password of the old network. I didn’t really consider that by giving the new network a different name that I would have to individually log each Wi-Fi using device into the new network.
I couldn’t be happier with my new 6+ version of the eero. I have 3 units providing better coverage than my 5 original units were. Simple setup. I’ve never had a single issue with eero equipment in the past.
Problem free technology, what else could one wish for!.
Pros – Easy to setup and connect these to an existing network/modem. Follow the steps and you will be up and running in minutes without fail. App walks you through step by step. I opened the box, pulled out all 3 eeros.
I then proceeded to plug in the first one and allowed it to connect. Once it connected, I switched my lighting hub to use this device which took about 2 minutes to be added. I then proceeded to adding the next one and set it up.
Then I proceeded to do the next one and got it up and running. I did have to connect existing devices to the new “network” SSID since it didn’t transition the password from the old one with the same name.
No issue doing this process, just connect devices to the new network, even if using the same name (iphones, ipads, tvs, streaming devices) and type the password. Devices are very quick to connect to the new network in about half the time it took with the older devices.
Build quality and size of these devices make them ideal for placing around the house. We have about 2000 sq ft house upstairs plus a basement. I placed one next to the modem, another one at the opposite end of the house and another in the front part of the house.
I am able to connect devices outside on the pool deck without fail. Speeds for all devices is very fast. I noticed that the streaming devices aren’t buffering like they were on the older network “extenders”.
These can also use the new Echo devices which have eero built in to extend your wifi to various areas of a large house. Very clean and small devices are very easy to hide behind objects on a shelf or in a room without anyone knowing they exist.

I was overwhelmed by price of other wifi router after having a hardwire with Comcast business internet service. Appearantly Comcast business only supports/compatible with f a few cable modems with no router function.
Yes only modem itself if you chose to use third part cable modem/router instead there rental modem/router. So I had to buy only modem that compatible with Comcast business internet then bought separate router.
What a waste of time, function and energy for what. It would cost me way more then what it could be if I did not find this router. Really good price with things I needed. Just simple wireless router goes with the JUST CABLE MODEM cus unreasonable reasons from comcast.

I purchased the Netgear AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 router (RAX10) because my old Spectrum router was slow and had horrible coverage. My security cameras were constantly losing signal and needed to be reset at least three times a week! It kinda defeats the purpose of a security system if it is constantly going out.
The AX1800 was easy to install and get set up, the NIGHTHAWK app is awesome! It allows you to test your speed, see who is connected to your network, pause/block connections as well as allowing you to have your own guest WiFi network, set up smart parental controls, and check your network traffic! The additional Armor/ Bitdefender security keeps all of my family’s important info private and secure.
Like it should be! Having this much peace of mind at such little cost was a no brainer.
Accelerate your WiFi with net gear Nighthawk. Enjoy the fastest WiFi currently available, with speeds up to 1900 Mbps and a powerful dual Core 1GHz processor for extreme performance. High-powered amplifiers, external antennas and beamforming+ improve range and reliability for up to 100% more wireless coverage.
Features like Dynamic QoS prioritize streaming and gaming, creating a blazing-fast, lag-free WiFi experience. R7000 provides an extensible design that enables service prioritization for data. Make sure that the network settings of the computer are correct.
Wired and wirelessly connected computers must use network (IP) addresses on the same network as the router. The simplest way to do this is to configure each computer to obtain an IP address automatically using DHCP.
The Nighthawk R6900v2 that I bought a few days ago is quite an upgrade from the ancient ASUS RT-N16, meaning that it’s much faster and had far greater range. I finally have full Wi-Fi coverage throughout my house, as well as my yard.
The only con I have is that in order to opt-out of Netgear’s data aggregation, one must send them an email, rather than simply including an opt-out button within the router’s settings. That is really the only gripe I have with my Nighthawk router.
Well, that plus setting it up the first time revealed some major glitches (not accepting my password after upgrading the firmware via their app – I had to reset the router back to factory defaults) but I got it all sorted out.
eventually. Once the headache of setting up the router has been completed, it is a competent piece of equipment. Even though both the Nighthawk and old ASUS RT-N16 have gigabit LAN ports, I have found that using the Internet is noticeably faster with the Nighthawk; it’s not my imagination either.
🙂 Would I recommend the Nighthawk R6900v2 router in spite of its setup warts? Indeed I would!.

Ones beginning with “C” are AC wireless routers with built-in cable modems, “A” is a USB adapter, and “EX” are Mesh Extenders. While the R6900 is “okay” and the R6900P is “better”, the one you need to focus on is the R7000.
It offersNETGEAR Armor and Circle Smart Parental Controls, but lacks MU-MIMO (multi-user, multiple input, multiple output) for high traffic/multipledevices. MU-MIMO can be found in the R6900P and R7000P (AC2300).
Released in 2013, the R7000 is a Netgear workhorse that is still supported (as of 02APR21). It makes a number of best routers lists, and is the number 1 suggested router of Charter/Spectrum. It also has the best range/coverage of any of the three-antenna AC routers in its class.
The only shortcomingof the R7000 is weaker802. 11 b/g/n 2. 4GHz connections. Youcan tell it was designed for 5G AC.

IšverstiShow in original languageWe purchased the 2 pack Nest Wifi Mesh router as a replacement for our older Apple AirPort Extreme. We could never get it to function properly, eventually returning it to the store.
I’m digitally native, fairly technically competent and work in a technical field (engineer). These routers could not consistently maintain an internet signal. We have Xfinity internet. I imagine this is a very common setup in many homes using Nest routers.
We tried the router with two customer owned modems, an older Arris DOCSIS 3. 0 unit that has worked perfectly with the AirPort for about 6 years (can’t remember the last time it even needed a restart) and a brand new Arris DOCSIS 3.
1 modem. We contacted Xfinity each time before switching to be sure they were activated in their system and receiving an internet signal. The router had the same issue of not being able to obtain/maintain an internet connection with both modems.
I had to call technical support 3 separate times over the short time we had this unit. In the end, they blamed Xfinity, who in turn blamed Arris. But given that we had the same router issue with two separate Arris modems, and that each time when we reconnected our old AirPort, everything worked fine again, the variable here clearly is the Google Nest router.
The Google Home app, which controls the device, is cumbersome. It’s designed for ease of use, but this also means it’s a “black box” with minimal user control should adjustments be needed. I’m still not sure if the issue we had was hardware or software related, but in the end it doesn’t really matter as Very glad I was able to get a refund and try a router from another manufacturer.
If you do plan to purchase one of these, in addition to price shopping, be sure to pay attention to the return window the retailer you’re purchasing it from allows. We found national retailers vary from 15 days to 90 days.
If a defect doesn’t immediately present itself, in my experience, Google’s warranty isn’t where you want to be stuck, so those extra days may end up being valuable.
IšverstiShow in original languageHomes differ. I don’t want to suggest that competing products are intrinsically inferior to this product, but I did try out 4 different makes of mesh systems in my home and found the Google Nest AC 2200 three pack somewhat better than the competition in my home.
The mesh systems I tried were the Netgear Orbi AC 3000 two pack, the Amazon eero 6 four pack, the TP Link Deco S 4 four pack and the Google Nest. All systems were comparable in price, around $ 250, during the Cyber Monday sale window, except for the TP Link system which cost about $ 180.
I would consider these systems mid range mesh systems, not entry level ones. My yardstick was that the mesh had to deliver better speed and signal strength that my existing router and extender combination and had to be stable and consistent in speed.
What I found is that none of the four named systems, all of which claimed 5000 to 6000 square ft of coverage, actually covered my 3000 square ft L shaped home with uniform speeds across the home. I got about 160-200 MBps in one half of my home and only 50-70 MBps in the far end of the other half of the house with these mesh networks.
My subscription is 350 MBps and I get 120-160 MBps in one half and 30-50 MBps in the other half with just my router and extender. The three unit Google Nest based on the older AC 2200 standard gave me better speeds than even the four unit eero 6 mesh which is based on the newer Wi-Fi 6 standard, though the difference was not big: about 15 % better.
Speed apart, the clincher for me was that the two Google extenders in the Nest pack came with built in speakers which could be used as network connected speakers to play streaming audio. Overall, the Google Nest was better in my layout but I wish I could get a true 5000 sq ft mesh with equal speeds across my whole home.
IšverstiShow in original languageI bought this to upgrade my main node as I already had the 2017 version of the 1st gen pucks that worked fairly well. I appreciate that it’s backwards compatible with the older gen and able to use them as mesh nodes without any hassle.
My new home has several walls in between the main node and the locations that it makes to most sense to place the mesh points, so the upgraded antenna on this unit has given my older mesh points a boost.
I’m now getting close to double the speed at the ends of my house. It’s supposedly rated for 2200 sqft which would cover my whole house on its own, but I haven’t tested it out. When replacing the main node I did have to set up everything from scratch and reset the mesh points since there’s no way to transfer an existing network to the new unit.
Other than that, setup is a breeze guided by the Google Home app. My main complaints are the new plug shape and removal of USB C that the previous gen had, the lack of VLAN tagging, limited upload speeds on PPPoE mode, and limited download speeds in general (I get max ~600 Mbps from my 1 Gbps fiber, the ISP provided router got around ~850 Mbps).
If the nest WiFi points had wired backhaul and PoE to use as WAPs I might have considered purchasing them as well. If you want advanced networking features and settings this is not the system for you.

Bought this router at the beginning of 2022 after reviewing 25 other routers. I’ve been in the IT business for 30+ years and needed an ultra-reliable solution for my business network without having to migrate over to NOC level aspect.
The cost for this router was comparable to other high end routers. I also purchased the CM2000 Modem and discarded my ISP’s equipment due to their unreliable functionality. Unpacking and setup was very simple and all equipment appeared to be brand new with easy instructions to get started.
Changing the default login info was effortless and I was able to configure the entire process with no problems. Updating the firmware was also unproblematic and the phone app installation when well too.
Several months after the initial installation, I had some issues with the phone app. The app would not sort the list of devices connected and the reset function would not work on the app. Shortly thereafter, the phone app was updated and everything worked fine again.
A couple more months later, I ran into a few new issues with the router. First, I cannot change the QOS function. If I try to define my internet bandwidth – the router interface does not save the setting and reverts back to the “SpeedTest” setting.
Second, the “Security” says it is not enabled on the Home page of the router after logging in. Even though there is security setup on the routher and the phone app, it still says that it is “Not Enabled.
” Lasty, I am unable to turn OFF the “WPS” function and button on the router. The “LED Control Settings” just turn off the lights on the actual router device. This is not what I need. The WPS button can still be pushed and a device can be connected.
The “WPS Wizard” get to a point when it asks to input a “PIN Number” if chosen not to use the recommended “Push Button” option. If a 4-8 digit PIN is not entered, there is an error requesting that a PIN be entered.
And at this stage, nothing more can be done to disable the WPS feature on the router. So, minus the listed issues; it is a good router but I think I am going to go with the NOC network option and hopefully there will be no feature holes or discrepancies.
My old Netgear modem router wifi was dying. I needed a new Wifi router, and this was on special at PB Tech. After reading the specs and deciding on this device, it was couriered promptly. Set-up was a breeze for 2 Degrees broadband fibre, but I’ll note that I did have to go and find an advanced menu to set a VLAN=10 after entering my username & password.
The first speed test was like night and day; lightning fast fibre again (if not very much faster too). Reliable Wifi Maslow requirements for the family were satisfied again. I’ve been very happy with the router since.
Some other notes then: it’s not a terrible hedgehog antenna design (I barely notice it in my office), the four LAN ports for wired devices are useful, the Netgear Nighthawk app is ok and provides a useful device manager, internet speed check and traffic meter.
I can also set-up a guest network on the fly using the app too. I haven’t signed up for the Netgear Armor security (I hate subscriptions) or setup any parental controls yet. Highly recommended A+++.
The family has owned Netgear routers over many years upgrading them as the technology improved. Needless to say this router is the best one We have owed offering improved security, easy installation, greater coverage, wonderful app interface, and monitoring of devices connecting to it.
Netgear has upgrades for protection of individual devices with products that compete with the leading edge protection software. You can customize to the degree that you feel most comfortable, at home and away.
After installing the router, the protection that has a trial period picked up malware on two devices that the devices themselves did not detect. That confirmed my purchase, and along with my experience with Netgear, I can continue to use the internet with confidence and know that I have the best product available to safely navigate as well as protect my family’s investment at home.
Did I say I liked it, if I did I meant to say “I love my AX6 6Stream. Thanks Netgear!.
Up to 4. 3x Faster than Conventional Wireless Get superior performance and enjoy speeds up to 4. 3x faster than wireless-N with the Linksys AC1900 Dual-Band Smart Wi-Fi Router. Using wireless-AC technology this router offers exceptional data streaming speeds of up to AC1900 Mbps (N600 + AC1300), making it ideal for large households, serious gamers, and HD video enthusiasts.
The router’s gigabit Wi-Fi speeds allow for extremely quick downloads of large files. As you add Wi-Fi-enabled devices, wireless-AC makes it possible for you to catch up on your favorite show on Netflix while family members simultaneously stream HD movies on another device, play online games, or browse the web-without waiting for content to buffer.
The AC1900 also boasts three adjustable antennas that help distribute the Wi-Fi signal and extend its range throughout your home. The AC1900 includes USB 2. 0 and USB 3. 0 ports, letting you easily share devices like external hard drives and printers across your network.
It also has four gigabit ports to connect wired devices at speeds up to 10x faster than Ethernet.
Got this at a very low price, like 1/4th of the list price, which is good value. 5GHz coverage is excellent, the user interface is also good, even though the first setup is kind of tricky. If you only use the 5Ghz band, it’s very good, but unfortunately I could not use 5GHz and 2.
4GHz at the same time. It works for a while, then the 2. 4GHz band just dies (visible, but cannot connect). I have no idea why, tried all kinds of settings, read all forums, etc. I find this a typical problem with many dual band routers – for some reason using dual band setup is very unreliable.
(I have tried 5(!!) different kinds of routers. ) I have now change to using two separate routes for b/g/n 2. 4Ghz and ac 5Ghz, and that works perfectly.
802. 11ac is now the default wifi protocol, with the entry point being AC1200. The next step up from AC1200 is AC1750 and AC1900, etc. AC1750 and AC1900 are both extremely similar to each other in that they are both 3 stream routers, the AC1750 is an earlier chipset that relied on an AC transceiver for 5ghz and an N transceiver for 2.
4ghz whereas the newer AC1900 uses an AC transceiver for both 5ghz and 2. 4ghz (commonly Broadcom). Broadcom also uses its TurboQAM to increase maximum link rate in 2. 4ghz from 300mbps to 600mbps as 80mhz bandwidth is not possible in the 2.
4ghz band. Add this to the 1300mbps link rate at 5ghz and AC1900 supplies a possible 1900mbps across both bands; AC1750 supplies 450mbps on 2. 4ghz and 1300mbps on the 5ghz or 1750mbps in total. However, in order to get these super high link rates you will need an AC1900 router, an AC1900 client and 40mhz bandwidth (on 2.
4ghz). The first is easy, we have many AC1900 routers to choose from, the second is not so easy as few AC1900 clients are actually sold or included in mobile devices, and finally being able to use 40mhz on 2.
4ghz is almost impossible due to the amount of congestion at this frequency, any interference from other nearby networks will cause the router to fall back to 20mhz. Why buy AC1900 then, if you can’t get its rated performance? Perhaps faster file sharing from USB 3.
0? Or better 2. 4ghz due to the newer AC transceivers? With all of that out of the way what do I think about this router? Setup was simple, power down router and modem, swap out router, power up modem then power up router, once done final setup was performed via browser on a networked connected PC.
I like the simple GUI that Linksys is using, it is definitely is user friendly but in my opinion is not quite so informative as other GUI’s in competing routers. I was able to hang the router on the wall where my existing router sits, however the orientation of the screw holes was weird and forced the router to be suspended with the antennas all pointing to the left and the Ethernet ports pointing to the right.
It did not affect performance but forced me to re-route the Ethernet cables! I work from home and having a speedy wireless and wired connection is vital, especially as I run my own network server with multiple VM’s running web based applications.
Most of my mobile devices all have modern AC chipsets, some of which are even mu-mimo enabled and my main work laptop has an Atheros AC wireless chipset that is good for 300mbps on 2. 4ghz and 867mbps on 5.
0ghz. I should point out that most users want a wireless/wired network that can take full advantage of their internet speeds. My cable connection provides a maximum of 65mbps down and 25mbps up so, to get the best from my internet connection, my wireless devices should all be able to ‘talk’ to the router at these rates or higher! Being a geek I have an inherent need to test technology and routers are a bit of a hobby of mine.
My test routine remains constant, I test network speeds only and do this using my laptop with the Atheros AC chipset at a set location, 40ft away from the router with 2 drywalls in between. The router is always set to channel 6 on 2.
4ghz in 20/40mhz mode and channel 153 on 5ghz in 80mhz mode. WPA2 AES security is enabled. I then use Totusofts Lan Speed software to send packets of data to and from my laptop via wifi on both 2. 4ghz and 5.
0ghz to a wired PC on my network and record an average upload (write) and download (read) speed. For this review I actually tested 4 routers, AC1200, AC1750, this AC1900 and my current default AC2600 mu-mimo 4 channel router.
To cut a long story short, all of the routers performed very similarly to each other, except for the AC2600 router which out-performed them all by quite a margin. The EA6900 was able to write from one wired pc to another wired pc on my network via Ethernet at 689.
50mbps and read at 869. 23mbps which was faster than the AC1750 and AC1200 routers. I put this down to a faster, up to date cpu/chipset and more internal ram. At 2. 4ghz the EA6900 was able to write at 18.
84mbps and read at 52. 24mbps and at 5. 0ghz the EA6900 was able to write at 31. 85mbps and read at 65. 56mbps. Not bad considering that I was testing at almost 40ft from my router with 2 drywalls in between! This router was easy to setup, easy to use, has a pretty good interface and mobile applications to allow for remote access.
Performance was really no better than AC1750 or AC1200, which is what I expected. The router has been consistent and reliable with no downtime so far and performance is leagues ahead of any N class router.
1 star off for weird wall mounting and lack of firmware updates. Would I rush out and buy AC1900 over AC1200 or AC1750? No! Performance is no better and range is the same, however at this price I see no reason to buy an entry level router.
I bought this to replace recently purchased EA 6350, which although a good router, was not as robust for 11n devices on the 2. 4ghz channel. Set up was simple – screw on the antennas, plug in the modem to the router and to my notebook, opened a browser and it went right into the set up page.
easy-peasy. Speed/range/connectivity are all great. We have between 9 – 12 devices between computers, network storage, tablets, smart phones, printer, and Roku and all get the bandwidth that they need.
We have a ton of SSIDs nearby (well, over 20 anyway) and an environment with a lot of potential interference, but have no problems with a strong-stable signal to all our devices. *This is hardware version 1.
1. I have read reviews mentioning that the EA 6900 ran rather hot. mine does not! In fact I’d say that it runs noticeably cooler than my previous routers. (I do not know if those were hardware version 1) A few observations/recommendations: 1.
This is a great router for those who desire some flexibility but the Linksys WRT series are better for the die-hard network pros out there. This is a good match for anyone from a casual “I want to plug it in and have it work” type to someone who wants a moderate level of control (such as myself).
2. On that note, I do wish that Linksys would include documentation that goes into explaining how to set up each band for the best performance based on what folks are running on it. The defaults which are geared towards running ANY device that you may have are not necessarily the best settings for those who have all 11n or above devices.
A little judicious tweaking of the settings can result in superior network performance. 3. Yes, it has some limitations, but I LOVE Smartware! It is not aimed at those seeking to have finite control over every aspect of their network, but includes everything that the majority users will ever need in an easy to access/understand format.
4. I seldom use on-line chat support on tech products, more often than not an adventure in frustration. I was pleasantly surprised when I used Linksys’ on line support chat. Not only did I get the right answer on tweaking my network settings.
but got a very detailed explanation as to why those settings were recommended. The EA 6900 is best suited for anyone who wants a very good performing router, that once set up to their individual needs will probably “set it and forget it” (which is likely why the led’s are in the back of this unit).
Network pros out there should check out the Linksys WRT series.

Reviews From Real Customers
I bought this router in 2017 as a backup for the router I was using died. Well, that day came yesterday and I set up this new router today. First router I have been able to set up by myself without calling my ISP provider for assistance.
Took literally minutes with connectivity specs being preprogrammed into the router & my desktop was wirelessly on the ‘net so quickly. Took me far longer to get all my google mini voice activated ‘smart’ plugs, outlets, connected.
If this 80 year old woman can connect quickly, you can, too. Will only ever buy Netgear routers if necessary in the future.
Once we finally got it installed, the NETGEAR R6220-100NAS has been great. I bought it initially because I was hoping it would speed up our wifi, which was from our phone company and really slow (rated for 7Mbps and was always lower).
But it was frustrating to install because the only instructions it came with were to download the Nighthawk app and use that to install the router, but the app tried to locate our existing wifi (our old modem/router from our ISP was still installed) and couldn’t find it.
There was no alternate way to install, and I don’t know what people were supposed to do if they didn’t already have wifi in the house to begin with. Maybe the problem is I was confused, but anyway I set the Netgear aside, intending to return it.
Then COVID-19 came along and we had to get on Zoom and our existing wifi was too slow for that, so we changed our ISP to the cable company. The cable company only provided a modem, not a router, so we needed a new router that was not also a modem.
Good thing I hadn’t gotten around to returning the Netgear router to Staples yet. The new ISP’s installer who came to our house also set up the Netgear router for us. Problem solved! Our new internet is rated for 100Mbps speed via ethernet, though one should usually expect wifi to be slower than the ethernet speed.
The Netgear consistently gives a speed around 42Mbps on the 2. 4Ghz wifi and 117Mbps on 5Ghz. Woohoo!.

– From a corporation perspective, this product is a marketing disaster and if I were ASUS I would be doing whatever necessary to rectify the situation and give paying customers what they were promised on the box.
– If the “fast” Mbps speeds were never promised in the first place, then I would consider this to be a very good router from a “working product” perspective. – I am currently reading the box the router came in and I quote, “Concurrent 300 Mbps (2.
4GHz) and 867 Mbps (5GHz) throughput for HIGH-SPEED wireless performance”. – That statement could not be further from the truth, considering this device’s max output is 100 Mbps, regardless of the wireless channel you’re connected to, wireless device proximity, or if it is hardwired.
– Keep in mind this router is directly hardwired to my other router which outputs around 450 Mbps (limitation due to service provider) – Considering my current success with my ASUS RT-AC66U, I didn’t think twice about purchasing another ASUS router as an access point, but unfortunately this product changed that trust.
– The only reason I purchased this product was because I am a little too far to get 200+ Mbps on the 5GHz channel so I needed to extend my wireless range. – So while this router does in fact boost the signal strength, the boosted signal is essentially pointless, as this router did not deliver what was heavily advertised on the package and on the Newegg website.
– To you ASUS, getting rid of inventory by misleading customers, is not a great way to boost customer retention.
Actually this product is solid gold. Love the interface and setup was a breeze, well not exactly but in a great way. Let me explain. This product is for a customer of mine that has Comcast Business class modem.
I was having issues setting up the router mainly because the modem DCHP was disabled. Asus tech support was helpful but glad that I caught the issue as an IT professional. It was pretty obvious because on the router’s interface page, it clearly showed a DCHP error on the main page.
Great reporting, after Comcast enabled DCHP, I was online in no time. Now i’m going back in the morning to finish the job by doing port forwarding then i’ll call in a day.
I think I’ve had this router between 6-12 months now, and had to get rid of it. Although the 2. 4ghz range was fine, the 5ghz coverage was surprisingly small. My problem was constant wi-fi disconnects and slow connections.
Many times I’d be connected to the 2. 4ghz channel to browse something waiting for a connection, and I’d turn the wi-fi radio off on my phone because cellular was just faster and less of a headache. Constant connection complaints from the rest of the family, poor wi-fi performance and everyone streaming school or video at home because of COVID made this router more of a hassle than a deal.
Gaudy interface (but a good amount of configuration options, surprisingly) and no DD-WRT support unless you get the later G hardware revision, no wireless bridge mode IIRC, and it’s from 2015. Pick something different.
Best Routers 2022. Super-fast WiFi 6 Using the WiFi 6 standard, the NETGEAR Nighthawk RAX200 12-Stream WiFi Cable & Fibre Router is ready for 8K streaming, lag-free gaming and ultra-fast downloads. Or all these at the same time, as it works very well with multiple devices at once.

My previous 2. 4gz Wi-Fi network was reaching max of 6mbps at the longest distance in the house from the modem. Now the same spot goes up to 20mbps. The 5gz network wasnt even getting there, I had to use a repeater.
Now not only it does get there but also speed can go up to 30mbps. Close to the modem and both 2. 4 and 5gz networks go easily to 50mbps. Amazing, I am super happy, no complaints. However if you have a huge house you may need to place it in a central location.
This modem greatly enhanced my internet connection 2-fold and has been working great since set up. It includes great range and the 2 bandwidths offer an extra high speed connection which I use the 5gHz option.
The setup is the only area I had trouble with. Connecting the cords was very simple however deciphering what setting I needed to change so the modem would connect took a bit of ‘Googling’. In order to connect the modem you are required to open up an internet browser and use Netgear’s program to finalise your connection.
The included instructions suggest that the modem will automatically connect and change server settings to the required settings however this was not the case. Netgear’s website has troubleshooting information but nothing that helped me.
After reading various blogs, etc I discovered I needed to look through Netgear’s program and find ‘Advanced Settings’ then change 2-3 setting types to ‘Automatically Detect’ as well as change the MAC address.
Once I had done this my connection worked with no issues. I’m not sure if everyone runs into the same issue or if that was just me but be prepared to change some settings if you get this modem. Chances are if you are buying this modem you are already a bit tech savvy however if you are not you may end up becoming frustrated until someone can help you.
Apart from the setup issue, I think this is an excellent modem for a reasonable price.
This is a great bit of kit and I am very pleased with it. I had problems with the generic basic modem routers sent by my ISP so looked into options from there. This design is a bit quirky but works so well.
I used this with a plug in Netgear MESH extender for upstairs. Together it makes a great setup and sorted the drops and bottlenecks I was getting continuously I used a free online meter (Netspot) to review the % of signal received with the old router, the new router they had sent me, and this router (in various positions too).
This router, for my set up, improved my received wifi by about 15% of available signal, plus working on dual band ac. Also, I suspect my overall download capability via copper is improved too from my speed tests with ADSL / ADSL2 / ADSL2+ / VDSL modes I was able to use this as a trusted quality item with a decent quantity of reviews available against so many alternatives on the market to sort out the issues I was having.
