20 Best Guitar Pick For Electric Guitar (2023 Updated)

I started learning to play guitar a few months ago and had mostly been using Fender medium picks. I wanted to start trying different options after about 500 hours practice. Im glad that I did because like all guitar players eventually you start experimenting with different picks.

In the beginning I was just happy to keep the pick in my fingers and not fly out of my hand but now at almost 600 hours I’m seeing the advantages of trying different types of picks. Its worth trying but in the beginning I don’t think it matters much because you haven’t developed enough skills to be able to see a difference.

But once you get the fundamentals down you can appreciate the difference between the assorted picks this selection offers.

After buying dozen packs of each pick in various sizes to try out as a beginning acoustic guitarist, this is the best (and cheapest) option since it also includes a variety of materials. For now, I’m partial to the orange Tortex.

60 and Nylon. 60 and. 73 as my instructors advise starting out with thinner, more flexible picks. This is about like having a wrench set in your toolbox! When you find the ones most useful, add more of those to each kit.

Finally found this Dunlop variety pack when searching for a pack with tortex flex. 73,. 88 and tortex standard. 73 sizes. Never would have thought it would be named ‘acoustic variety pack’. The tortex flex picks are excellent and overlooked by many.

If you like dunlop nylon and standard tortex, then you’ll probably like the tortex flex; it’s a kind of hybrid of the two and feels like it.

These picks are the ultimate “every scenario” pick. They have the jazz tip for precision picking. They are tortex material for that nice, scratchy tone that everyone enjoys. Aggressive sounding for rock and metal.

The thickness is ideal as an all rounder. ie. it has a tiny bit of give for strumming, but rigid enough for fast picking. 72 pack means it will last you a long, long time. Feels good in the hand, doesn’t slip because of the surface texture of the pick.

What more do you want? Sure, you can get a jazz III for pure speed picking, but then your rhythm playing lacks something, or a regular tortex pick, but then you don’t have the precision tip of the jazz III.

This pick is in my opinion the ultimate all in one pick. Master of none per se, but it can do everything pretty well. I love mine, and I think you should try the TIII. 88mm out as well.

I had been using Dunlop Tortex Standard model prior to trying out the T3 (both in. 60mm). While I can still find use for the Standard pick (e. g. , soft/fluid strumming), I find the T3 facilitates a bit more definition or precision (not quite sure how to put it).

The bit of added sharpness at the tip makes a difference. Anyone accustomed to using the Standard for lead and/or intricacy is likely to experience a benefit in the T3.

Being guitar picks, I obviously use them to play guitar. I play electric guitar for what it’s worth. I use a variety of pick brands, but they’re always heavy thickness. 1. 00 is good for me. These Fender Celluloid Shell picks look nice and play well.

They’re one of my go-to picks now. My only complaint, and it really isn’t a complaint, is that they feel a bit “slippery,” for lack of a better word. However, they’re celluloid picks and that is to be expected, regardless of brand.

Overall I’d rate these picks 9/10. Would certainly purchase them again.

I use 351’s for acoustic and electric rock-n-roll! fender makes some of the best picks! They sound great and are easy to play with my guitars. They are easy are the eyes as well. Great colors! I use them in my mojo grips as well.

Joe Pass turned me on to ultra small jazz picks a long time ago, and he was capable of improvising 16ths at 220, so the pick IS capable of a lot of speed. As for strumming, sure, it’s good for that too, but if you want speed, this is a good choice.

A critical factor is the shape of the point: It can’t be too sharp, but it can’t be too rounded, either. The Fender pick fits the bill in that regard. Whoever engineered it knew what they were doing.

It’s “just right. ” As for thickness, I would have preferred a slightly thicker pick, but it is thick enough — about 1. 2 mm, I would say. The surface has enough grip that it doesn’t slip around when you’re going 120, but it slips by the string like glass.

Drawbacks? Can’t think of any. I use a variety of picks in every practice session so as to avoid fatiguing my hand and wrist, but this is always one of them. For reference, I use a Benson-style right-hand grip with the pick held roughly 90 degrees to the string and twisted upward about 80 degrees.

Just look at George Benson to get the idea. The pick is very smooth using this technique. A real pleasure.

These are fantastic for those of us who dont for whatever dont hold our picks tight enough to keep them from moving around between fingers. I have tried a lot of other picks to no avail but these do the trick for me anyway.

You can change out the pick to your desire. Dont pass on these their great.

A bit steep for only 3 pieces of rubber. Good concept considering hard to find coated picks with a proper grip. Another company seemed to have stopped making them. Also, you ship with I assume some free picks? DON’T ASSUME we all like thin/heavys out here.

I would like FENDER MEDIUMS, if you don’t mind. Didn’t seem to have a choice in the matter when I ordered.

Due to hard dry skin picks tend to rotate in my fingers. Have tried silicone pads which improve but the MOJO Picks are the best solution yet. Had an issue with delivery but PMT responded quickly and the issue was resolved.

Happy to deal with PMT again.

These became my favorite pick the instant I tried the first one. I love how they feel. The regular delrin picks (Tortex) work well and last longer than celluloid, but I don’t much care for how they feel in my hand.

I have dry skin, and They tend to move a lot. I feel like I have to grip them harder. The delrin 500, with the added teflon and the more polished feel are easier to hold onto. They just work better for me.

This is the second bag of 72 I’ve ordered. Great product!.

Opinions on picks are very subjective and one may use different pick materials & thicknesses depending upon the instrument & music style you play. After years of constant experimentation, I found these picks as my favorite for playing banjo.

They provide the correct overall balance, ie, they’re stiff enough to play chords in a typical combo environment while providing the correct flex that allows for smooth strum hand tremoloing. I would not use them for playing a Strat, an arch-top or flat-top.

All of this is just my opinion. I always advise musicians to try different picks; you may be surprised at what you discover. These are quality picks with consistency of material and a great value. Play on, my friends!.

Started using these picks after getting one from Jake E. Lee at Red Dragon Cartel’s gig in Helsinki. Thanks to a kind finnish guy who handed it to me saying “I saw you got it but it dropped, take it.

” Never used Jake’s actual one, let it just be the special thing. In fact, some years passed before I actually ordered the Gels from S&B. They feel unusual to “regular” tortex/delrin picks I used to play so it took me a while to get used to them.

I don’t know how and why it happens, but to me it seems like the picks sustainability, endurance vary from pack to pack. Sometimes they get trashed literally after 30 mins. of playing or even after a dozen of hard strums and the pick hooks the string or two making it too hard to play.

Sometimes they stay pretty well, wearing evenly and even with some minor wear they add a nice “bite” to the sound when you play with overdrive/distortion. It’s literally hit or miss, unfortunately.

I discovered these picks completely by accident. I had just purchased a used guitar from my local GC. The sales person informed me that particular guitar came with a case. This made me very happy, as I had forgotten to bring an empty gig bag to bring the guitar home in.

Problem solved, I thought. The sales person brought the case out from the back and placed the guitar inside. I got home and was eager to check out my new guitar. I took it out and was appreciating the upholstery in the case, and opened the accessory compartment.

There I found exactly 2 of these pics, one purple and one red. I didn’t yet have a pick in my hand, so I grabbed the red one and started playing. I played for a while, checking out the guitar’s tone, action, the shape of the neck, etc.

I noticed right away that the pick felt very smooth against the strings, and the material was comfortable to hold. After a while, I realized that the pick had not shifted in my fingers at all the whole time.

Most picks shift around on me if I don’t deliberately grip them tightly, but these stayed put effortlessly. I bought myself a pack the next time I went by the store, and I don’t think I’ll be using any other pics ever again!.

I like these for studio work. Great for strumming chords. I feel like heavier picks give you more attack but less clarity. These provide a bit more clarity but don’t cut though the mic quite as well.

I’ve been using Dunlop Tortex 1. 0 mm picks for years with no complaints. I stumbled across the Ultex pics, gave them a try, and so far, I prefer them to the Tortex as far as how they feel and wear. With the Tortex, you get a very durable pick that won’t break; it has this softness, but it does wear quickly and looses it’s edge.

The Ultex, while being pliable as well (seems like it would be difficult to break), it also has this stiffness that doesn’t wear as fast and is better for pic slides, for example. The Ultex feels like a hybrid between plastic pics and Tortex.

I’m happy to have found another great pic to choose from.

The Dunlop Ultex series of picks are some kind of the best guitar picks I’ve ever used. They are super durable and sound great. The guitar picks people use are a seriously underrated and overlooked part of your tone.

After playing with Fender medium and extra heavy standard picks for 15+ years I decided to try something new for a different feel, sound and durability. Now I’m struggling with what thickness and tip shape.

The sharps are awesome because they have this great sounding attack and are super accurate which translates into faster individual string picking. The standards are a great all around pick with more articulation.

The material is awesome. They almost have a glass like sound when you jingle them in your hand and the 1mm-1. 14mm still have a touch of bend. The 1. 40mm up are super stiff. String release is instant with all.

I also like the Jazz III XL in Ultex but keep coming back to the Ultex standard and ultex sharp (which has the same sharp tip shape as the Jazz III). I usually play the same pick for both electric and acoustic and have found the 1mm and 1.

14mm are balanced enough that you can play either and not have any issues. The thicker picks have way too much attack for me on the acoustic.

New product, unopened. Perfect! I bought these after reading a review somewhere about how they last so much longer. The reviewer said he had used these picks for a year and the tip was barely worn. Well, I guess I have a really heavy picking hand, as I have to file down the tip every month or so because I round off the point.

I have cracked the tip off on a few of them. They do feel good against the strings – not like those indestructo picks made of plastic with the ridged grip at the top. And the picks last longer than any other celluloid pick I’ve used in the past 40+ years.

These are my favorite picks – pricey but worth it.

Love the Ultex feel and the grip is perfect, not too much-not too little. The first time I touched Ultex to a string I knew it was special, then I tried the Primetone and wow what a grip, not too grippy but just right for my sense of feel.

It’s very easy to let this pick “float” for rhythm and yet have a great firmness for single notes and picking. I got lucky and found both of these in a variety pack. I have ordered more. They are that good.

I also like the Jim Dunlop’s Tortex over celluloid, but Ultex is slicker and quicker-Primetone brings it all together. My experience is with. 88 and 1. 14 Tortex, 1. 0 Ultex, and. 96 Primetone. The. 96 Gator is good too, but it’s Tortex (Delrin).

Only one complaint–they’re so dark you’ll never find a dropped one at night. If they ever make these in a brighter color, I’ll be ordering a dozen.

If you are an acoustic player (especially mandolin!) and you are already familiar with the excellence of the Blue Chip pick, this is a great contender for the price. Now that is not to say that is EXACTLY like a Blue Chip pick, but with the price difference considered, it is great for what it is.

The material is not quite as dense as the Blue Chip pick material, and the the material’s surface is not quite as grippy as the Blue Chip pick’s material. That being said, it is still worlds above the other typical flat picks.

If you already play with Blue Chip picks, I think this may be a good pick to use in situations where you might fear losing such an expensive pick (playing on the road for instance). If you don’t already play with Blue Chip picks, I think these are worth a try for those not inclined to make the leap and buy such expensive picks.

I am not sure I feel the better quality is of as much impact if you are an electric guitar player, but may still be worth trying if you like experimenting with different picks. I was actually impressed with the attention to quality that is afforded these picks in the aspect that they are apparently hand-beveled and include a sign-off sheet with the worker’s initials.

These are great picks. For me, they play well on my guitars and mandolins. They produce a warmer tone but still project well. Unlike some other thick, rounded edged picks that I’ve tried, they still provide a great response for treble voicing in addition to the strong bass.

The rounded, sculpted edges are conducive to fast, flat picking and the 1. 3 mm thickness give a stiff but precise feel. In the center area of the pick, the name, thickness and additional texturing of the large triangles provides an excellent grip surface.

I’ve used/tried out picks that are MUCH more expensive but I couldn’t see a correspondingly dramatic improvement in tone, volume, precision, or playability. Right now I find myself switching back and forth between the sculpted plectra with the rounded tips and the ones that are the large triangles and have a slightly more pointed tips.

For the money, you can buy a lot of these picks (as opposed to those expensive clear picks or those thick ones with the big holes in them) but for me these sculpted plectra picks are great performers at a great value.

(Plus, if you lose one, you’re not out an arm and a leg. ) I couldn’t see much difference between the 1. 3 and 1. 4mm picks, but to each his own. Price, performance, playability, strength, balanced tonal response.

It’s all here. I would recommend them to all pickers or strummers, novice or advanced. Give them a try, I think you’ll be pleased.

Jazz iii picks are by far my favourite picks. This pick, along with the jazz iii nylon (black) make the perfect combo for all my needs. This pick in particular provides a great attack on strings with great precision.

Does not flex at all, meaning every note is articulate and allows you a quick access to your next note (perfect for alternate picking). Since this pick is thicker and tougher than the nylon jazz iii, it adds some treble to your sound – perfect for strats and achieving some cool country tones.

Plus, with this flashy colour you’ll never lose your picks again 😉 Highly recommended.

I have been using Tortex picks since the early 90’s and have never found anything that works nearly as well. Tortex mixes high build quality with just the right amount of snap while feeling really good in your hand.

Before I found Dunlop Tortex picks I went through many produced by big names that just didn’t cut it. At the time I didn’t realize how important a quality pick is to producing a good tone or how much easier it makes playing guitar overall.

I had problems with lack of stiffness, loss of grip, strange shape or thickness and sometimes I was just literally tearing picks in half one after another during shows. Once I tried Tortex picks all of those problems disappeared! The shape is perfect, with both the sharp and rounded edges having their uses.

The feel is great, with a soft mat finish that seems to grip your fingers so I very rarely drop a pick. I have NEVER had one rip, sometimes using a pick until the sharp end is worn to a nub. The material itself has just the right amount of ‘snap’ to it that just seems to liven up my playing.

Even the very thin Tortex picks snap back and hold their shape while other brand picks the same thickness don’t snap back as well, sometimes warp, and can both fold and rip too easily. I am also particularly fond of the color coded thickness system that makes it easy to switch between picks for different instruments and songs by sight alone even on a dark stage.

I highly recommend that a first time user get a sampler of different colors or go to a local shop to test them all before settling on one. I personally fell in love with green as my workhorse pick but will sometimes switch to a blue or purple for metal or when I need a little more stiffness.

For acoustic I use something along the lines of a yellow to give that string slap sound that sounds good for open chording. I can not recommend these enough. They are the perfect blend of everything that you need in a high quality pick and can make playing more enjoyable.

The longer you play, the quicker your style gets, and at some point, the flimsy, thin picks start breaking and wearing quickly. I love the blue hard picks. They’re cheap, so you can buy a pack and literally throw them out onto the floor in your practice space, so there’s always one to pick up within spitting distance.

Good durability. I’ve lost a hundred of these, but never had one break on me. They are pliable, durable, and cost-effective. They don’t make any more noise than you would expect out of a stiff pick, and they have a nice soft, but sandy grip to them.

Highly recommend. Buy them quite often. They make one grade harder I think. green? Play hard and you’ll need these.

Great picks that just have enough flexibility to give you the sound you want. They also have a bit of a rough side to them which I like as it helps to give you a better grip and prevents them from slipping out of your fingers.

Love the thickness of these picks. Very little give in them, allowing for a better strum. I actually feel more accurate using these picks as well.

Fantastic picks with just enough grip and heavy enough to really dig into the strings

I thought this was just a normal string purchase until I took them home, put them on my guitar and all I can say is my life will never be the same. I now have 5 girlfriends because of these strings. Someone gave me a house, just gave it to me because they heard me playing with them.

All my friends moms look at me differently too. I find myself saying eyes up here ladies. a lot. Thanks to these magical strings.

This is the pick you need if you want your strat to sound like an 80s strat. ie; Michael Landau, Dann Huff. this pick can be heard on the countless tracks of the music that came out throughout the 80s.

But it does require that your guitar is properly set up to appreciate and hear what this pick can do. Your strat sounds will have so much more quack and percussive attack. This pick grabs the string just the right way and with it being nylon, gives your guitar strings highs more prescence like an acoustic kind of quality.

You can’t break these picks. They are virtually indestructible and will take you forever to wear one down. Also there are a lot gentler on your strings too. I never break a string when using these picks.

But if you want that classic celluloid tone (ala Eric Clapton) I would recommend the D’Andrea standard 351 shell pick. Both guitar picks together are an unbeatable match.

Big fan of these jazz-pick shaped plectrums by Ibanez Japan. I gravitate toward heavy metal playing, so the first two picks out of the pack got worn down pretty thoroughly. I was used to the grip and feel of Dunlop tortex Jazz III’s for so long that I was actually over-exerting with these new ones.

Once I got used to the shape and tip of these Paul Gilbert picks, they felt extremely smooth during fast legatos and sweeps. I recommend the jazz-pick shape in general to players who wish to play technical, articulate metal guitar.

These plectrums by Ibanez Japan are an excellent balance of size, shape and material quality. Try them out!.

These are good picks and has the perfect gauge/thickness. The only thing that boggles me is why this color is more than expensive than the other Paul Gilbert guitar picks. Same material, thickness and shape but you have to pay a couple more for this color.

That is why it gets a 2-star rating from me.

Before I bought these picks, I had in mind what the ideal pick would be for me. I wanted a comfortable, rather small pick with a pointy tip. This allows me to play faster and, with them being smaller in size, you have less material to maneuver.

I now prefer these signature Paul Gilbert picks over the picks I used to use which were too big, had a less pointy tip, and didn’t feel all that comfortable to grip.

Jim Root Nylon 1. 38 mm picks are sic. I love the slightly less than hard attack, great for solos and strumming on acoustic and electric. Like an upgraded Jazz III XL with a pointier tip, and I love the Jazz III XL.

Perfect rigidness, not fully hard and definitely not too soft.

This is one of the best picks ever made in my opinion, except that they should have added max grip or more texture! If a Jazz III is too dinky but you need the articulation, this is it! If Tortex is too scratchy sounding, this is it! If the black nylon 1mm is your thing but is too floppy, this is it! If max grip has grip but sounds weird in comparison to the original nylons, this is it! It has the general revenue of the the original nylon, but it’s stiffer, and has a Jazz III tip! The only thing I could ask for is max grip WITHOUT CHANGING THE NYLON FORMULA OF THIS!!! The only reason is that this could get slippery if your hands are sweaty.

I haven’t dropped it yet, but that’s the only thing that could make it more perfect!.

I saw this recommended by a professional jazz guitar player and tried it. I have been using softer picks but after trying this one I see the benefit of using firmer picks. Some say they use the hardest picks they can find.

This one is very close to the hardest one I could find and it works very well — especially for lead lines. I really like it and recommend it highly.

What differs this pick from the orange one is that this white one seems to be a little wider where the player holds it; this feature gives more confort and security to the musician. Another aspect is that it has a sharper edge; it means that, when touching the strings, the player spends less energy, which makes his/her maximize the movements and feel less tired.

Besides, it seems to be a little lighter than the orange pick. All things considered, it is a very good pick, giving confortability, security and pleasure for the musician. Highly recomended!.

I bought this for extra storage on a Fire Stick. Unfortunately, it does not give me a larger buffering cache as the OS on the Fire Stick does not allow to put cache buffering on an external device. It does, however, allow me to put downloaded medial content on an external drive and play it on an internet detached TV set.

I can also use it with my Android phone for the same purpose.

These Dunlop Celluloid picks gives me that Classic tone that only a good quality celluloid picks deliver. I prefer the XH ( Extra Heavy ) gauge for full control and warm tones of a thick pick. These Dunlops tend to last a bit longer than other comparable type, style & brand.

Celluloid picks normally do not last very long specially for players that play and gig a lot. Extensive playing will usually start showing some wear on celluloid picks in a matter of hours. I’ve played a lot from other brands in my entire 29 years of guitar playing and these Dunlop Celluloids tend to last a lot longer than the others I’ve tried.

Great classic tone and control. And yes, I tend to agree with people saying that the different color seems to deliver a slight difference in tone and attack. The tortoise shell color seems to have a brighter attack than say a white or black ones which normally has a richer, warmer tones compared to the tortoise shell color.

Nowadays I’ve been playing the Dunlop Jazz III XL Series Nylon Stiffos ( Black ) for electrics and the Herco Flex 75 nylons ( Silver ) for acoustic work and they are my standard picks of choice but I still play a Dunlop Classic celluloid on a regular basis whenever I crave that classic tone and familiar feel.

I started out with a celluloid pick and I still love the feel and tones they give me.

After trying a number of different shell picks and black Celluloid picks, this one nails the tone and attack that I needed for my Strat. If you’re playing cleaned funky guitar riffs and love that quack tone from your Strat, this is the pick to have.

Perfect combination of silkiness and snap. Do you want to capture that Paul Jackson Jr tone. Think the Commodores nightshift. But this pick can rock too!.

I received one of these by accident when a friend sent me deluxe hard case he wasn’t using, and it was one of two picks left in the storage space with the key. lol. I tried it for one practice session, and ordered three 6-packs of 205s the following day.

I’ve used JD Jazz III Stiffos for well over 20 years, and had NO interest in switching, but when I tried the 205, it was as if I’d gotten an upgrade. Like the bow of a violin, this is where our tone is initially propagated.

The feeling/feedback of this pick is so much more natural and organic than anything I’ve tried before. I’m rediscovering my sound, and could not be happier about it. A VERY surprising bonus for me: I have a proper sounding pick slide again! As many as of us know, if you use the Jazz III Stiffo, you sacrifice the sound of a classic VH/Rhoads pick slide.

unless you take the time to reshape the edges of all your picks with a file, which I never did, and was fine with it. Killer tone!!.

Molly Tuttle uses these picks so thought I’d give them a try ( not that I play anywhere close how she plays) LOL ! ! ! Wanted a warmer sounding guitar pick and these are it. Only issue I have with them is they’re kinda slippery ( especially in cold weather) are hard to hand onto.

If only there was texture surface on these picks would be my perfect guitar pick for my gibson 50’s Lg2. I would still recommend them if you’re looking for a warm articulate sound.

If your looking for a smooth round tone these picks are perfect. These may not be for everyone, jazz picks do come with a learning curve. If you are not familiar with using this type pick it may feel a bit awkward at first.

However if you are willing to spend the time getting to know them, the tonal rewards are great. These picks are great for many styles not just for jazz, they do however lend themselves to smooth darker tones.

I’ve been playing for over thirty years both live and in the studio. I’ve spent way to much money chasing tone. If your in the market to improve your tone, buy a bunch of different picks, spend some time with them.

It’s a much more effective and economical way to chase what you are looking for. It seems like such a small thing but picks make such a big difference in your tone. Do yourself a favor and give these a try, heck for that matter order a variety, you might just find a little magic, I know I did.

Got these to use and give to a few select Eddie loving friends…never again. They’re perfect…if you don’t ever touch them! Second time I played my guitar with these I noticed tiny black flakes all over my hand and white guitar…the design and signature comes off just handling them so now I’m left with a bunch of overpriced plain red picks.
