20 Best Am Fm Radio For Reception (2022 Updated)

I loved this radio. Excellent sensitivity and selectivity. Excellent audio quality. I liked the ergonomics and the feature set too. I had 2 of them and they both failed in the same manner, the display develops problems after 5 or 10 years.

The display is not connected to the main board by a soldered connection. There is a rubber piece that has carbon channels in it. This is wedged between the display and the main board. That connection eventually goes south.

I got a few extra years out of it by a cleaning that connection with de-oxit. But that only gets you a little more time out of the radio. Excellent radio just dont expect it to last a very long time.

I suppose at the current price it’s worth the cost to just trash the old one and get another one, which I may do as i really liked the radio when it works.

I find the CCradio 3 to be a pretty amazing radio. Love the MW RX performance. From my home I can easily get stations in Chicago that are 255 miles away at noon. Having NOAA WX radio built in with alert is a sweet feature and this will come in handy as my wife and I go car camping a lot in the warmer months.

There are very few portable radios that have a NOAA alert feature which this radio has. The radio uses four D cell batteries which is unusual to find and will give it a long run time. The FM performance is great and pretty close to my Sangean HDR-16.

There are a number of areas that I will take the radio to this year that don’t have a lot of interference and I look forward to using the radio. I use the radio almost every night and fall asleep to old country music on WSM and use the sleep timer to have it shut off after 30 minutes so as to not run down the batteries.

But there area few things that I find lacking. First is that there are only five memories per band. It is 2021 and I find this lack of memories surprising. The next thing is that it does not have RBDS (Radio Broadcast Data System) which shows the station name and other data like song titles or program name.

This is a common feature in many portable radios and makes listening to FM a lot more enjoyable. Most Sangean radios have this feature. Last of all it needs a built in fold out carrying handle. The indent in the back that you put your fingers in to carry the radio is an accident waiting to happen.

Dropping this radio would be a disaster. I knew that the radio did not have these features when I ordered it BTW but still find it surprising that Crane does not have these features in their flagship radio.

But I would still recommend the radio to anyone who wants to have what is likely the best portable radio available.

While the FM, WB, 2meter band tuners work fairly well, the AM BCB does not perform as well as I expected since that was the primary reason for buying this radio. I found the audio output strained when listening in larger rooms where you are more than a foot or two away.

My GE P780 has unquestionably superior sound. The audio power rating on this radio seems rather optimistic. The weak signal reception has a lot of background hiss/noise until the signal is rather strong.

The AGC continually pumps on weaker signals making DX listening fatiguing. Compared to my two Sony ICF-S5W’s it is not as clear or listenable with weaker stations though it does match to the Sony’s selectivity.

The built in carry indent has a rubber grip strip which promptly came off making the radio impossible to pickup with one hand without it slipping off. While CCrane offered to repair it, returning a 2 week old radio at my expense renders the warranty useless for a minor(?) defect.

(the grip handle, while a clever idea fails in practice. ) Over all it’s the only choice in today’s market for a decent portable AM/FM radio. However I think at the current selling price the overall performance is disappointing.

This is a very compact HD radio based on the low engery HD chip. Being small its speacker is tinny. When connected to a good speaker or headphones the audio is escellent. HD stations provide static free audio.

You will want to use the suppied ac adapter(be sure that it is fully seated as there is not light indication of ac power use on the radio) as this is a battery eater. I use everyready lithium batteries and get about 3 days of constant use per set.

This is a menu driven radio. The menu is not reliable to setup with if the batteries are low. Whit good batteries or ac adapter the menus work well and are eary to use. The present are 10 FM and 10 AM with 5 buttons on the front that are switched by choosing the “page” you are set to.

There are 4 pages. It will remember the last station tuned to when you turn on the radio. This is a world wide am/fm radio. You can set the bands to your countries standard. It does not do shortwave and HD radio in europe is DAB and not compaitable.

Downside when you change the region am/fm band it earases all your presets. It does not come with a carring case. When you are packing it you can slde the lock button on the right side to lock and none of the buttons will be accidently activated.

Overall this is a nice HD radio that like all HD radios hasan exceptional turner section that will tune in stations not normally recieved even on high end am/fm turners. The very nature of the HD signal requires very sensitive turners.

Yes it does am and fm HD. The FCC has started approving Digital only AM radio stations and this radio will recieve those signals.

Make sure you check your local HD station web site to make sure you want this radio. The stations had changed by the time I ordered the radio. Also most stations are just adding their sister stations as HD2 and HD3.

This is ok when the sister station is AM or from the internet but not so special when its just another analog station Already on the dial. The alarm works great especially how it comes on quietly and turns up Gradually.

I only gave it 4 stars because I have an analog Sangean DT 800 pocket radio with a bass boost switch that sounds like a home stereo tuner when used with headphones or plugged into a stereo aux port. I cant understand why Sangean cant make this radio have better sound quality.

The whole point of the Hybrid Digital is to increase the sound quality while consolidating scattered sister stations. Like HDTV. Better picture and consolidated channels. I can run this through an equalizer pre amp and that will do the trick but thats puts this radio back 40 years in sound quality.

Like a Kraco connected to a Pyramid eq amplifier. Ha ha.

The Sangean HDR-14 is a high-performing radio that delivers excellent reception of standard analog signals as well as HD stations. FM HD signals can be heard from about 50-60 miles away, and AM HD is available from 100+ miles.

Impressive performance that matches that of larger HD radios I have used. Having this performance in a radio this size (roughly 3″ x 5″ x 1. 25″ thick) brings the capability to enjoy HD radio just about anywhere you like.

The controls are fairly intuitive and easy-to-use, but you’ll probably want to at least leaf through the owner’s manual (which is concise and well-written) so you don’t miss out on some of this radio’s useful features, such as the sleep function and alarms, the ability to turn emergency alerts on and off, and the many station presets.

Audio quality is crisp and clear, with a sound that’s pleasing for a radio this size, but obviously you don’t have the bass and volume that a larger radio/speaker can deliver. Battery life is good with the 3 AA batteries, and there’s an AC adapter that’s included with the radio so you can plug it in and conserve your batteries when listening near an electrical outlet. NiMH rechargeables also work well, eliminating the need to buy throwaway batteries.

(This radio does not provide onboard charging of rechargeable batteries when it’s plugged in, so you do have to remove the batteries to recharge them if you’re using rechargeables. ) The antenna is longer than on most radios of this size, which undoubtedly helps maximize reception of FM/FM HD signals.

While a long antenna on a small radio can cause stability problems, Sangean has cleverly addressed this issue with a small flip-out stabilizing flap on the bottom of the radio. It works great, preventing the radio from having the tendency to tip over when you have the antenna fully pulled out.

Sangean’s little HDR-14 is a high-performing, feature-packed radio that provides excellent reception of both analog and HD stations. I’m very glad I bought it. I find myself using this little radio more than my larger HD portable simply because this radio performs just as well as the larger one, and it’s so convenient to use and to take anywhere.

What I really like about the Victrola – Retro Wood Bluetooth AM/FM Radio – Walnut it brings back good fond memories when I was a kid in the late 50’s throughout the 60’s what old radios looked liked and sounded like.

(I even remember tube testers at the grocery stores and pharmacies for TV’s and radios). I especially really like the radio knob and the station numbers on the Victrola Radio. Good sound as well for one speaker.

My only problem is it does not pick up any Los Angeles, CA. radio stations or two or three San Diego, CA. radio stations. The signal is weak for the AM frequency. Just picks up the four local AM radio stations in my small city and one radio station the next county south from my city that is about 25 miles away.

I have C. Crane Pocket Radio and it can pick up a couple of Los Angeles, CA. radio stations and a couple of San Diego, CA. radio stations that uses only two AA batteries. Just might be my location There is some blocking in my surrounding area in the building that I reside at and few other buildings.

The FM frequency is very good. Picks up many FM stations, but not from Los Angeles, CA. Mostly local and a couple further up north. But still I really enjoy listening to my Victrola Retro Radio during the day and at night when I go to sleep.

Better than I expected! Not really pretty but sound is really really good. Nice to have treble/bass control. Picks up FM stations just fine. Haven’t tried AM yet since I don’t tune in to that very often.

Really don’t need the BT feature, but for some that might be a plus. Definitely “retro” and reminds me of the way bigger radios when families (before TV) would gather around and “watch” radio! Nostalgic, but then I’m not a youngster.

Overall, would definitely recommend. Sometimes wish it had a snooze button so that I could listen til sleep overcame me. I guess that’s what clock radios are for but I didn’t want the always present light coming from the radio.

This Victrola is perfect for me!.

Although I gave four stars this is a excellent radio with some old fashioned flavor. It looks similar to a 1975 Sony radio I have except it’s smaller. If the dial had a backlight it would really take on the 70’s feel.

The dial also doesn’t line up with the station. It’s not a huge problem but noticeable. The Bluetooth sinks with my IPhone easily and the volume is good for a radio this size. It’s a radio not a boombox so if you want deep base you probably will want to try something else.

The antenna is also helpful for removing any static from the stations. Overall I am pleased and I enjoy listening to my favorite stations. This brings back a lot of memories!.

I love this vintage little radio. It fits in our remodeled bathroom very well! I love that I can listen to my Apple Music playlists or just the radio ( we don’t really have other radios in the house so it is nice to have that option).

I like the sound quality it produces; it is a similar sound to my beats pill Bluetooth speaker, only this one does not get as loud. Often I will listen to podcasts while in the shower and the speaker is slightly hard to hear at the same time.

(That’s the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars) the speaker holds its charge for a while. Comes with a short black cord to charge but no wall connector piece to receive the usb. I love this speaker because it sounds great, is super modern with Bluetooth, looks vintage, and is a great price point.

Will be buying a few for fiends as presents.

We were looking for a portable radio as we live in a fairly active wildfire area, and are subject to power outages and evacuations. This is a perfect size, with excellent sound quality, stereo output, and runs either on AA batteries or an AC adapter (not included).

We are very pleased with our purchase, in addition to the fact that it has excellent AM reception. Another feature is that there are up to 10 AM.

The product comes with no batteries and no adapter. Anyone who listens to the radio for a long time each day should also order an electric adapter. Volume adjustment buttons are located in an inconvenient position, and are not noticeable in relation to the rest of the buttons.

Good sound for the size. Volume range is from 0-30. I listen to it at 3-5 at a desk and also 12-15 outside. I does go a lot louder than I need it to be and that’s perfect. Not pocket size but compact.

I own several of their offerings and have never been disappointed at the features or the value. Among my radio-stash is the 10 year old forerunner to this radio and other than power failures, it has been playing reliably in fulltime service since that time.

I am a broadcast engineer and preordered the HDR-18 for an older friend who uses our classical service. Her S**y HD radio had burned up and factory service simply said, “Sorry. ” I believe that this radio will give her the good service that my radios have given me.

Overall, this is an excellent HD radio — and one of the few available. But better quality high definition sound makes it worth it, as well as the ability to listen to the secondary HD stations (usually commercial free).

Hopefully the replacement radio will work flawlessly and Sangean will implement the redesign suggestions that buyers have been making to remedy the excessively bright light around the power button and make the labels much more legible.

Small, compact with a lot of features, especially made for a traveler going worldwide. Was a little complicated for me to set up and I don’t travel. But tried it for a bit and overall a good radio with a very decent sound.

This is a very good radio to be so small! The sound quality is excellent and more than what I anticipated! It has good reception, and is very easy to use. I highly recommend this radio!

Good sound and a cool wood case that’s lends an old school cool vibe Grabs and holds FM stations well. However. A stronger station will walk right over a weaker one. For example in my area 100. 3 comes in great and ocuppies a big swath of the anolog scale.

101. 5, doesn’t come in at all on the sangean but comes in great on a much older radio set right next to it, also comes in great on the car radio when it’s parked in the garage. AM reception isn’t great in fact poor.

Wasn’t cheap. Expected more Don’t recommend to a friend.

When comparing with Tivoli and Bose wave, I like its sound better even though its not a stereo because of rich bass classic Radio sound not a digital sound. Easy to control and well reception.

I drank the Sony Kool-Aid several years ago and have Sony TVs, DVD players, Cameras, and Lenses. I thought this radio must be of similar quality. NOT! I could not pull in local AM stations clearly much less a station 10-20 miles away.

FM works ok, but I bought this for the AM feature. Tuning is almost impossible with stations that are close together and even if the station comes in, the static is unbearable or the signal drops out if you move, the radio moves, the earth moves, if anything moves.

I hate to say it but this is going back for a refund and I will seek out an old transistor radio.

This small radio, with my arthritis it would have been better for me if it was slightly larger, surprised me with very good sound quality. Selecting the stations is helped having the red Tune light come on right over the station number, but since they are close together (shorter distance between them) have to rotate dial very slowly to get it right on station.

A very good value in a small package, 2. 75×4. 75×1. 025 inches ~.

This radio works great, can go fairly loud and it’s all wrapped in a small and stylish look. Using it for listening to Blue Jays games in the park/at the beach/in the backyard and I really like it. The battery life is also excellent, plus there’s a headphone jack if that’s what you prefer.

The radio itself is most excellent. This radio was purchased after having been pleased with the first which was obtained a few months ago. The first radio featured rechargeable batteries and headphones.

Expecting the second one to have the same, we were somewhat disappointed, however the 2nd one was only $18. 00 and the first was $40. 00. One can’t snivel too much as a consequence of our thinking which was that we were getting a “real steal” the second time.

We are very pleased regardless.

Sony Radio ICF-P26. I carry this beautiful little radio everywhere , even on my bicycle. Its very light weight and tunes to stations sharply. Crisp sound on both FM & AM. Ive had no issues with this radio.

Full credit to Sony for producing such a great radio at a very reasonable price, and I have since purchased another one for keeps. Batteries last incredibly long time. 10 out of 10 Stars.

Very good price. Best Buy sells same radio for several dollars more. Decent tuning sensitivity but not great. Tinny speaker. Headphones a must. FM antenna does not seem to have any effect on FM stations.

Volume wheel needs some resistance as it changes your level if, for instance, it brushes against anything in your shirt pocket. But all in all, a very good radio to take on your walk or listen privately to your ballgame.

A Sony made in China, presumably of Japanese design. I got last one in the store.

The volume control/on off dial broke in less than a month. I have had at least 3 other brands of small AA radios I use at work and they all lasted, but eventually showed wear from rough use. Luckily I kept one as a back up and am using it until I decide what brand to try next.

I took this one apart. The screw on the volume knob came out and was stuck to the magnet on the speaker. I of course broke the speaker wires and had to re solder them. I put the volume knob back on with some red thread locker and the screw and now it is working.

I love, love, love this wonderful little Jameson battery operated, hand-held radio. The reception is really good, The stations do not fade, it has a GOOD tone (which is surprising for such a small radio).

I am so glad to have this battery operated radio in times of power outages. Just what the doctor ordered!.

I still cant get the main news station that I listen to in the car. I try to adjust it but cant get AM 1070. A basic station. I will use it in case of emergency. Also its as light as a feather. No substance to it.

I fear it will break easily. Itll be in our emergency kit. Hopefully it will work if needed.

The FM sound quality was good, and the selectivity was fair. The AM reception, sound quality and selectivity was very poor. The packaging materials were in good condition and along with the product container box, it appeared as if the item had been shipped before.

I only tried operating the radio using the 110VAC line cord. I did not try using batteries. The main reason I purchased this was to use it with AM only. The reception description was covered above. I have another AM radio which is very old, and I wanted to replace it because I listen to nearby AM Programs for news and information from AM programming.

The handling and information exchange with eBay was excellent. I used eBay for many years to sell reconditioned radios. My ID is HAMEVAN.

I recently purchased the Panasonic AM FM portable radio. The radio is compact with a large carrying handle and the station tuner is easy to read. The sound quality is good but not excellent. Unfortunately the battery door doesn’t stay shut so the radio stops working as the batteries fall out.

It appears the radio may have been damaged in shipping as the outside packaging and radio box were torn. If you are looking for an inexpensive radio for the news then this radio would be fine. But if you want to listen to music then the sound quality may not be what you want with this radio.

This compact radio has clear reception, good volume and transmission of vocal sounds but lacks sensitivity in reproducing musical sounds. At times, the sound is quite harsh for my ears. I would have liked to have had a deeper bass and lower treble range in its speaker.

However, it seems to be a good value for a protable radio that can be put anyway in small spaces. I also bought it because it has an AC plug to avoid using batteries.

The Panasonic RF-2400 has adequate reception on FM. I do not even need to raise the antenna for the powerful local stations. Unfortunately, in large cities many low power and translator stations have been squeezed in between the high power FMs.

This radio can only bring those in if they are far enough on the dial from the strong stations. The AM section is very good. I get everything on AM in my area and at night can get many of the high power distant stations from several states away.

The sound quality is also impressive for a radio this size. It is no “boom box” but quite pleasing for the kitchen or workroom.

Back in 2000 we wanted a table radio for our dining nook, and another for our father’s shop. We bought a Boston Acoustics for our home and a Tivoli Audio for our father. We were ecstatic about our Boston Acoustics sound quality and digital tuning, but we also really admired the Tivoli’s sound and beautiful design.

Over the years we thoroughly enjoyed the sound and service of our radio, while our father used his to listen to “talk radio,” which I thought didn’t allow the Tivoli to “do its thing!” Well after 20 years our Boston Acoustics began to sound terrible (I think a number of the capacitors went bad with age), so we decided to replace it.

Table radios seemed to have fallen out of favor, so the choices were quite limited. I thought it would be great if we could stumble upon one of those finds where some store had lost track of an original Boston Acoustics radio, new-in-the-box, and just found it and decided to clear it out.

After a long search that came up empty we didn’t have any luck, for a Boston Acoustics that is, but we did find a brand new, in-the-box, Tivoli Model One! I immediately bought it and waited excitedly for it to arrive.

It came on schedule and was exactly as described, new and untouched. Hurriedly, we set it up and turned it on. The wonderful, full and rich sound that we remembered from Dad’s radio poured from the amazing, small speaker.

Tivoli Audio designed an excellent radio with the Model One and it sounds simply great. It doesn’t have the digital tuning and digital readout of the Boston Acoustics, but that doesn’t matter. In fact, the Model one is absolutely beautiful with its real walnut wood case, dark brown tuning and control knobs on a soft-almond colored background.

Even the 2 lights (one green and one yellow, to show power on and station strength) are perfect among the rest of the design choices. We have an excellent stereo set up in our living room, which really does sound wonderful in its own right, but on a daily basis the Tivoli Model One is the one the plays our music all day, every day!.

Bought the Model One Digital. Looks nice but totally unreliable. Problems with it from the beginning. Horrible service. Wouldn’t refund purchase. Wouldn’t replace unit. Just endless runaround.

Recently got the Model One from a dealer. Nicely packed, and a very nice analog, “no-frills” radio! The unit is well made, and has excellent sensitivity on FM and decent AM reception, certainly good enough for local/regional during the daytime, and many distant stations at night.

I am an AM Broadcast enthusiast, so I connected an external AM antenna made of a large diameter ferrite rod that is tuned over the band. Radio gets signal from a pickup coil on the antenna. WOW! Selectivity and Am stations come from all over with this radio now! Very nicely performing radio, with superior sound (retro old-school feel to the radio when tuning AM!) This is a nice addition to a living room, as a bedroom radio or kitchen unit.

True analog radio! You can tell when you dial in the stations that it is true analog because it doesn’t get choppy as you roll through the channels. It’s a smooth transition from one station to the next.

I love this because it allows me to get a few broadcasts in between that are fuzzy. (I miss analog TV too!) Also the shortwave station are excellent in my area. Received one from Czech republic (English speaking broadcast) and Cuba.

They are fun to listen to. The volume and speaker are excellent and I love the old school look. Battery operated only, but that’s okay with me. No need to extend the antenna in my area, everything comes in loud and clear with it down.

Love this radio! I will be buying a second one for a backup.

5 Core Multi-Band Radio The good. The bad and the ugly. Very first thing: the case is literally egg shell weak. The battery cover broke in three places as I was removing it! I put the first six inches of duck tape on to hold the cells in! More on that “case”, it’s just plain ugly.

There are stickers and trim that may serve to make it look good. Be really careful handling your radio. It will break! The good? This thing has a Sony radio chip in it! Yay! This means the AM part works really good! There is no earphone jack.

🙁 If you can keep it all together you can DX with it! Yay! Three stars for egg shell case.

I take public transportation and it’s a small, convenient size. Just pop it in your pocket and go, which was important to me. The sound quality was my top priority though and it didn’t disappoint. Even in areas where I always got a weak signal, radio stations come in clear with no bleeding stations blending together.

I also like that it has a lock so that you don’t accidently turn it on when not in use, killing the battery. All in all, nice little radio for the price.

Too new to judge AAA battery life or durability, but reception and sound quality (using existing quality ear plug type) are very good. Ear phones with radio are cheap and just rest in ears unlike plug type.

Overall pleased with purchase.

Overall, a fine device. Does all I waned. Only complaint I have is I am constantly, in error, selecting the 90 minute timer function when all I really want is to play the device on full time. Advise to all : READ THE DIRECTIONS.

I use this fm radio every day when I need to carry it will me, and am hoping it lasts well. It is a bit fiddly for me to find the channels I want, but I can do so. The volume is very adequate as well.

Worked to begin with then kept stopping for no reason . I will be returning this radio after Christmas.

I wanted a small simple traditional radio. This is perfect. Dials for tuning and volume. Nice and easy to use.

Can’t go wrong with Panasonic!!! In January 2021 I purchased a Kaito Voyager V2 Am FM radio and was quite impressed with it. After i had it for a little over a week I left a glowing review and literally three days later it completely quit working! So do yourself a favor and spend a little more money and go with a QUALITY brand like PANASONIC!! I have had a Panasonic cordless phone that’s at least 20 years old.

I have dropped it probably 10 times over the years and it continues to work perfectly!!! I HIGHLY recommend Panasonic and feel ridiculous for wasting $25. 00 on that Kaito radio! The clarity of the sound is amazing as is the volume! Easy to find MANY stations and you can use with electricity, it comes with a cord, or use with batteries.
