The sunny yellow of a lemon can add a dash of sunshine to your day, some tartness to your lemonade or a dose of detox to your hot water. Lemons are a great tool for more than just cooking and at-home cleaning concoctions. They can create shine in your hair, lighten it and fix and nurture a number of beauty issues, making the lemon a must-have in your kitchen and by your bathroom sink. Let’s slice one up and see some of the juicy ways the little lemon can help you.

DIY Lemon (Beauty) Aid

Called nature’s multitasker, the lemon can make a toner, skin enhancer and cleanser. Just remember that the lemon is a sensitive little fruit and reacts strongly to light. When using lemons in beauty treatments, it is best to stay out of the sun right after so as not to cause irritation or discoloration.

Quick fixes like this lemon nail rinse are as old as time but still work well. Refresh your yellowed nails caused by sun exposure or nail polish with just one lemon. Rub your nails with half a lemon for two minutes and then rinse. Store the lemon in a plastic bag for future nail treatments. You can do it daily for up to five days and get whiter nail beds fast.

Acne-Fade Mask

Lemons exfoliate skin and lighten it. That means you can lessen the look of old acne scars. This mask makes up to eight applications so it can be shared with friends or stored in the refrigerator for later use.

Ingredients:  2 tbsps. honey, 4 tsps. lemon juice from fresh lemon, 3 tsps. plain Greek yogurt, 1 egg white.

Whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl and apply to a clean, dry face. Let it sit and dry for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and pat skin dry.

Lemon Vinegar Foot Soak

If you spend a lot of time on your feet or just can’t get to the salon or spa for a pedicure, then just mix up a batch of lemon and apple cider vinegar foot soak at home for a fast and easy way to relax and soften up those tired togs.

Ingredients: 5-10 cups of hot water, 1 cup apple cider vinegar, ½ cup salt, juice from 2 fresh lemons.

Soak your feet for 15-20 minutes in the solution.  Use a pumice stone to further exfoliate the feet.  Rinse with clean water afterwards. The apple cider vinegar scent can linger.

Lemon Rinse

Dry skin that flakes off is no one’s friend.  Solve your scalps pH problem with a lemon!

Ingredients: 1 tsp. lemon juice, 1 cup water. Mix together.

Pour the rinse over damp hair in the shower and massage into scalp for two minutes. Rinse thoroughly so the lemon juice won’t lighten your hair when it sees the sun.
