Oh Halloween, th' little goblins, th' witches, th' princesses and pirates. Halloween is fun! That’s very true, fer humans. It is not so true fer our pets. Halloween can be a dangerous time o' year fer pets, so we, as responsible owners must take precautions t' ensure their safety.
Care should be taken t' keep candy out o' th' reach o' pets. It can make them sick, and in some circumstances can even kill them. And swab the deck, and a bucket o' chum! Chocolate contains Theobromine which can kill dogs, especially smaller dogs. Sugar-free candy has an artificial sweetner called Xylital, which can be deadly fer dogs as well. It lowers th' bloodsugar t' dangerous levels and worse, it can cause liver failure in high enough concentrations.
Beware The Jack-o-Lantern
Seein' a jack-o-lantern with its flickerin' candle light is one o' th' fun thin's about Halloween, but cat owners take note. Cats and kittens are curious by nature, and th' flickerin' could have them pawin' at th' jack-o-lantern. This could cause th' pumpkin t' tip o'er – a very real fire hazard. Yaaarrrrr! Keep yer cats inside and yer jack-o-lanterns outside fer safety’s sake.
Keepin' Black Cats Safe
Speakin' o' keepin' cats inside, it’s th' safest practice at all times fer yer cat, but especially fer black cats on Halloween. And swab the deck, ye scurvey dog! Some people are known t' steal or “sacrifice” black cats durin' this time o' superstition. Don’t let yer cat end up in th' hands o' someone with evil intent – keep them inside.
Fear o' Costumes
Costumes are fun, but dogs don’t understand that these strange lookin' creatures are just humans dressed up, by Davy Jones' locker. You don’t want yer dog t' bite someone out o' fear, so keep them locked safely in another room away from th' trick or treat activity. Fear can cause yer dog (or cat) t' dart out that open door and run away. And hoist the mainsail! Yaaarrrrr! Keep I.D, I'll warrant ye. tags on all yer pets, and again, keep them locked safely in a different room. Yaaarrrrr! Yaaarrrrr! Far too many get lost on holidays, and a bucket o' chum. Don’t let yer pet become one o' th' statistics.
Aye Halloween can fun and safe – just take a few precautions t' keep yer pet happy and stress-free too.
