January 21, 2020

Looking for travel inspiration for 2020? We’ve got you covered! There are so many possible destinations, so we narrowed it down by focusing on four key factors. This list has a little bit of everything for everyone and it’s all family-friendly (but also perfect for a girls trip!).

The first is an undeniable hot spot based on a major event taking place this year. The second is a way to unwind and practice self-care ahead of another huge upcoming moment. The final two suggestions are based on two growing travel trends—the active vacation and ecotourism. If you’re wondering where to travel in 2020, read on!

Tokyo, Japan

The 2020 Summer Olympic Games will be held in Tokyo, Japan, which means that travel to the area is expected to peak. Having lived in two Olympic cities, I’ll say that, even though it will be really busy, there’s nothing like experiencing the excitement surrounding the Games.

Whether it’s in the weeks leading up to the big event or the months that follow, there’s such a unique, festive feeling in the air. We’ll be traveling all across Japan in late August, and if you get the chance, we highly recommend visiting this amazing country.

In 2020, the busiest times to visit Japan will likely be during the Tokyo Olympics (July 24 to August 9th) as well as the national holidays, Golden Week (April 29 to May 5) and the Obon Festival (August 13 to August 15). During these times, you can expect flights and hotel rooms to be more expensive and you’ll probably face long waits at restaurants, historic sites, and other attractions.

No matter where you travel, it’s always a good idea to brush up on the local culture and customs before you arrive. Japan is very different from North America in many ways, but if you surrender to it and think of this as an immersive adventure, you could have the experience of a lifetime!

Aruba

Every year, travelers flock to Aruba, but there’s an added incentive to book in 2020. The island nation has launched the “Election Disconnection” vacation package for people seeking a break from the toxic political climate. It doesn’t matter what side of the aisle you find yourself on—you’re probably exhausted and overwhelmed by the ongoing drama.

Designed to give you an off-the-grid escape (there’s no WiFi access and you’ll be given a lock box for smart devices!), the Election Disconnection travel experience will give you a chance to unplug in luxury surroundings. Really, does it get much better than that? Actually, it does!

Custom itineraries are curated and created for each guest based on responses to a simple questionnaire. You’ll be asked about your needs and preferences at booking, and Aruba’s travel experts will go to work planning a getaway designed just for you.

The Election Disconnection trips will take place in October 2020, so that you can return in time to cast your vote on November 3, 2020. You’ll be refreshed and relaxed at the polls by avoiding the last few days of craziness leading up to the big moment. If you register on VoteAruba.com now, you’ll receive priority access to reserve your spot when bookings go live on March 2, 2020. Availability is limited, so don’t wait too late!

Hyatt House Chelsea, New York City

When was the last time you visited New York City? It’s such an iconic spot that many people overlook it when planning a vacation. There’s just so much to do, whether you love shopping, sightseeing or want to take in a Broadway show. It’s also a great active vacation destination!

Do you want to be in the heart of the action but need well-appointed, yet affordable, accommodations? The Hyatt House New York/Chelsea—where guests can choose between residential-like suites and spacious studio rooms—is perfect for you! You’ll be close to the Empire State Building, Times Square and One World Trade Center.

The active vacation trend is growing, so make sure you take advantage of the ample jogging paths that take you through famous landmarks including the Central Park Reservoir. World of Hyatt members can also earn and redeem points for fitness classes (including barre, yoga, and kickboxing!) and spa experiences, as well as Exhale on Demand subscriptions at participating locations.

There’s no shortage of amazing restaurants in New York City, but if you find yourself feeling hungry after a busy day, the H Bar at Hyatt House New York/Chelsea offers the H Bar Sip + Snack menu. Prepared with fresh, quality ingredients, options include Mediterranean Bowls, Korean Street Tacos, and an All-American Burger. It’s a great way to replenish reserves after walking along those massive New York City street blocks!

Silvies Valley Ranch, Eastern Oregon

Another rising trend is sustainable travel, which makes the Silvies Valley Ranch in Eastern Oregon a great destination. The boutique eco-resort allows guests to focus on health and wellness in a truly unique setting. While you’ll find WiFi inside of the buildings, the vast outdoor areas will give you a chance to enjoy a digital detox without cell phone service.

Founded in 1883, the modern mission at Silvies Valley Ranch is to build and maintain an ecologically-sustainable retreat by setting a gold standard for ranching and environmental practices that can serve as a model for generations to come. Guests occupy the ranch along with 50 horses, 3,000 goats, and 4,500 cattle while native wildlife roams freely.

It may be rustic, but the accommodations are truly luxurious. The property boasts eight lakeside one or two-bedroom log cabins featuring king-sized beds, private outdoor hot tubs, rain showers and more. If you don’t need a full cabin, you can stay in one of the 18 Ranch House single and double-king guestrooms.

Silvies Valley Ranch offers a number of experiences including ranchland eco-tours, horseback riding, and nationally-acclaimed golf courses. You can even play a round of golf with the world’s first (and only) goat caddies. That’s right—the caddies are goats! Soothe tired muscles with a massage, spa treatment or lap in the Olympic-sized pool at the 17,000-square-foot Rocking Heart Spa.

One word of advice: review the menu for the on-site restaurants before booking. Your dining options outside of Silvies Valley Ranch will be limited, so it’s important to make sure you’re happy with the food the ranch is serving. If you stay in a cabin, though, you’ll have a kitchen and a full dining table, so you could always bring a few things to prepare on your own.
