So, Christmas is over. It seems like it took forever to prepare for Christmas. There was all the shopping and baking and decorating to do. Then in just a few hours worth of present opening and visiting with family, the holiday was over until next year. All that’s left is a slight mess of wrapping paper and the Christmas tree in the living room – and then a pile of candy canes.

Use Up Your Candy Canes In This Candy Cane Latte

I love hanging candy canes on the Christmas tree. It gives it such a festive look. The kids and my husband will eat one or two candy canes too but since they come in a  box of 12, I always end up having more candy canes than I need. I generally let them sit around in a pile for a few weeks until I throw them away. This year, I decided I would use up my candy canes in a Candy Cane Latte.

easy-candy-cane-latte-recipeIngredients:

  • 1 cup of strong, hot coffee or cappuccino
  • 1/4 cup milk of your choice (warm)
  • 2 tsp sweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 drops of peppermint extract (not flavoring)
  • Whipped cream
  • Crushed candy canes

Directions:

  • Mix the hot coffee with the sweetened cocoa powder.
  • Add the warmed milk of your choice and the peppermint extract. Stir.
  • Top with whipped cream and crushed candy canes.
  • Enjoy!

This is a great way to use up your candy canes after the holidays. Of course, you could always make this during the holidays as well. If everyone in your house loves to eat candy canes and you don’t have leftovers, you can pick up an extra box of candy canes when they go on clearance after the holidays. Properly stored in a cool, dry place, wrapped candy canes will last for quite a while. If you’re careful about storing them so they don’t get sticky, you could probably enjoy this Candy Cane Latte well into the summer months. If you don’t have candy canes and want to enjoy this recipe, you can crush the red and white Starlight candies for the same taste and flavor.
