It is time to fight back against winter and its war on your skin. Now is the time to seize the spring day and bring on some beautiful renewal with your skincare routine. Find out what is true and what is a downright lie when it comes to taking care of your skin. It’s a beauty myth smack down!

True or False? Your Clarisonic brush is your exfoliating BFF.

False, exfoliation is important but not enough to use this mechanized brush more than twice a week. Don’t put your skin into overdrive and use it morning and night as suggested. As an additional exfoliant it works just fine. It is never good to over-scrub your skin with any product, including the Clarisonic. Use with care 1-2 times a week and with a gentle cleanser to avoid skin going into hyperactive mode and producing too much oil or redness.

True or False? You have to wash your face every night before bed.

True! Yes, ladies, yes! Washing your face with mild foam or milk-based cleanser each night before bed, no matter how late, is one of the best things you can do for your skin. Disposable wash cloths loaded with cleanser are fine in a pinch but don’t rely on them because they leave make-up and cleanser residue behind which can cause clogged pores and future breakouts. Why wash your face after washing your face?

True or False? Layering products has no benefit.

False, applying your products in a certain order is always important. It makes no sense if you apply a thick moisturizer first and then a thin layer of serum. The thin product cannot break through and sink into your skin. Thinnest to thickest is the rule when using facial products. First, wash your face, spritz on an astringent-based toner, and add a layer of serum. Finally, apply the daily or night-time moisturizer. A light sunscreen should be used daily.

True or False? Makeup can cause acne.

False, there is no makeup out there that can cause acne. What really happens is an irritation or inflammation in the skin due to a particular ingredient in the product or product set. It is actually what you are using based on your own, unique skin and genetic make-up that causes the breakout. Terms like “noncomedogenic” are industry-made and really don’t apply.

True or False? You need an eye cream.

False, just not true. Eye creams are just another way that companies can shill products at a higher price. While you shouldn’t avoid your eyes you also shouldn’t use products that can irritate the sensitive skin around the eyes. A water-based cream or gel will work just fine.
