Walt Disney World is constantly expanding and evolving and this summer seems to break the record with new attractions set to open. Every year new attractions are added, while old ones fade away or are completely transformed. New characters arrive on the scene, too, bringing even more happiness into the magical world of Disney. Here’s what’s new at Disney World for summer 2019.

Escape to the Edge of the Galaxy

Perhaps the most anticipated opening for summer 2019 is Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Set to open late-summer, on August 29, 2019, the Star Wars fan’s dream come true will be the largest land within the parks: 14 acres within Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Expect to be transported to an altogether different planet. The star attraction will no doubt be the Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run, also set to open August 29, 2019, so make sure you’re ready to hop in and pilot the fastest ship this side of planet Earth!

A New Restaurant for Epcot’s Japan Pavilion: Takumi-Tei

Epcot’s World Showcase gives visitors the chance to dine around the world in one day. A new restaurant in the Japan pavilion takes dining up a notch: Takumi-Tei celebrates Japanese craftsmanship and the natural world with its upscale menu, signature cocktails, and premium sake. The restaurant will also host a daily, traditional Japanese tea service.

A New Pageant and Projection Show for Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom will debut two new shows this summer. Rivers of Light: We Are One kicks off on Memorial Day Weekend 2019 at the the Discovery River Amphitheater. Expect to see all your fave animated animal characters as well as real-life animals from Disneynature films in a stunning, multimedia display set to an upbeat, original musical score.

The magnificent Tree of Life, the centerpiece of the park, will be the focus of a new projection show, the Tree of Life Projection Show, also debuting on May 25, 2019: this new show, which runs through the end of September, will pay a special tribute to the 25th anniversary of “The Lion King.”

The NBA Experience Arrives in Disney Springs

The NBA Experience at Walt Disney World is set to open in late-summer, on August 12, 2019, ushering in interactive games and immersive experiences that give visitors the chance to be the next NBA star. Put your skills to the test on the court, pick up NBA-themed fan gear from the massive on-site retail store, and cap your visit off with lunch or dinner at the City Works Eatery and Pour House, an upbeat sports bar featuring classic American fare.

A Brand New Walt Disney World Resort: Gran Destino Tower

Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort’s expansion will be complete with the opening of the 15-story Gran Destino Tower on July 9, 2019, adding 545 guest rooms. Themed with the great Spanish explorers and historic innovative Spanish artists, writers and architects in mind, the resort will also feature two new restaurants: Three Bridges Bar & Grill will be located on an island in the middle of the resort’s 14-acre lake, Lago Dorado, while Toledo will offer tapas, steak, and seafood from a rooftop perch.
