The new year is a time of new beginnings and fresh starts, and with 2017 right around the corner, many people are starting to think about how they can make better decisions and lead healthier lives. From losing weight to reducing stress to creating a greener home, essential oils are a great addition to your new regime. Here are my favorites to get you started:


Whether your resolution is stress relief or a better night’s sleep, lavender essential oil can help. Lavender has long been known for it’s calming properties. You can diffuse it in the air to help with overall stress relief, or mist it lightly on your bed sheets to help you drift off into peaceful sleep.


When I’m feeling sluggish or having problems concentrating, my first thought is to grab another coffee. While I enjoy my coffee quite a bit, I’m realizing that I need to cut back. If you’re like me and you want a natural way to feel more alert, try diffusing peppermint essential oil. A peppermint oil body wash or bath scrub in your morning shower is a refreshing and energizing way to start your day.

Tea Tree

Switching to more natural cleaning products is a great way to start the new year. While vinegar and water work quite well for most cleaning jobs, if you’re struggling to clean an area that is prone to mold or mildew, adding a few drops of tea tree oil will help keep it from returning. To cut the scent, you can add a few drops of lemon essential oil to the mixture.


If you try to avoid traditional medicine when you get sick, try diffusing eucalyptus essential oil to reduce congestion. You can add it to your diffuser or put a few drops in your next warm bath for a relaxing natural remedy.


I have a thing about bugs: I don’t want them anywhere near me or inside our home. Citronella is a lemony scented essential oil that deters many insects. You can use natural citronella candles in your picnic area or even in your home. Or you can use it diluted in a spray bottle of water to wipe down counters, tables, or other areas where critters like to congregate.
