Makeup reacts differently in the summer months, so it’s important to know what products will work with you, not against you. You want to look fresh and have a hint of color, not walk around with shiny streaks of makeup running across your face. Follow these top tips for your summer makeup routine and look great even on the hottest of days!

Don’t Skip the Primer

Like a wall needs primer before you paint, your face needs primer before you add any makeup—especially in the summer. A good makeup primer will keep your makeup in place, as well as minimize pores and fine lines. Apply it directly after you moisturize. After you’ve used it and see the benefits, you’ll wonder how you ever went without it in the first place.

Consider Skipping the Foundation

I’ve tried going without makeup in the summer months and always regret it the minute I step outdoors. Most women have some imperfections and uneven skin tones we want to cover, but a heavy foundation during the summer will completely work against you. It will melt and settle into your fine lines and completely ruin all the work you did that morning to look your best. Instead of foundation, try a tinted moisturizer or a powder mineral foundation. They are both light, but offer some coverage.

Bronze Baby, Bronze

I don’t go a day (even in the winter) without applying a bit of bronzer. It gives you just the right amount of color and helps make your skin appear fresh and healthy. Brush a little bronzing powder on your cheeks and nose, with just a small swipe on your forehead and chin. I even apply it to my neck and chest if I am wearing a low cut top.

Lose the Lipstick

Instead of using lipstick, consider trying a stain or give your lips some color with liner. ‘Stain’ your lips by spreading the color with your fingertips and then apply a lip gloss or lip balm over the top. Your lips will appear fresh and the color will last all day. Just reapply a little gloss as needed.

Go Ahead – Give Waterproof Another Try

I swore off all forms of waterproof makeup when my eyelashes started to fall out. Trying to take off waterproof mascara was a nightmare, but times have changed and so has waterproof makeup. Do your research on both waterproof eyeliner and mascara and read up on what brands are best. There are a handful of excellent waterproof products out there that are worth trying.

Beat the Heat By Blotting

If you have oily skin, you know it’s sometimes impossible to beat the heat and avoid shiny skin. One easy fix, that fits into just about any size purse, are blotting papers. These can be a lifesaver in a shine emergency! Using a primer, as I mentioned above, will help keep down the shine, but with extreme heat it’s always best to be safe. So stick a few in your bag and you’ll be good to go.
