Generally considered a fruit, the squash is in abundance during this time of year. From butternut to acorn squash, each variety is different and contains its own healthful properties, including being great for skincare. Move over baked spaghetti squash and say hello to a whole new way to enjoy these fantastic gourds during the fall season.
While summer squash is loaded with Vitamins A & C, winter squash is now in season and available at farmer’s market and grocery store shelves this time of year. This means plenty of pumpkins, spaghetti and acorn squash to make some beatific concoctions. These recipes can help your face and hair as each type of squash is full of Vitamins A and C, plus iron and riboflavin too.
Fantastic Fall Facials
Butternut Squash Skin Brightening Mask
Ingredients: 1 egg, 1 cup cooked butternut squash puree. Add 1 tsp of honey or apple cider to vary the recipe and results.
Directions: Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. Apply to face and let sit for 10 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. Mask will brighten and tone skin. Add mashed papaya for exfoliating results.
Pumpkin Facial Scrub for Glowing Skin
This recipe works well if you have left over pumpkin rinds from another recipe.
Ingredients: Steamed pumpkin rind, 2-inch pieces are best. 1 tbsp. raw honey, 1 tsp. cinnamon.
Directions: Gently use a fork to make crisscross marks in the pumpkin pulp along each rind. Using a knife, spread the honey onto each marked pumpkin rind. Slowly, sprinkle the cinnamon over the honey. Take one rind and cut it in half. Use one half section on each cheek. Rub the pumpkin rind pieces over individual parts of your face in a circular motion. Rinse with warm water when done.
Butternut squash (filled with Vitamin E) can also help heel and protect skin as well as repair it. This is a quick and excellent little bit of DIY beauty that will fix up those dry, cracked heels.
Ingredients: 1 butternut squash cooked and mashed. Let it cool. Add 3 cups of milk, whole milk is best. Mix in 2 cups of vegetable oil.
Directions: Whisk in a large bowl or pail (think about dipping those feet in!) Once mixed, put your clean feet into the bucket or bowl and let them sit for at least 30 minutes. Rinse feet with warm water and dry. Don’t forget to put on some socks to keep the moisture locked into your feet.
