I love a trip down the beauty aisle at my favorite store just as much as the next person, but it’s always nice to find that items I have at home can work just as well! After all, women decades ago didn’t head to the store when they wanted to make their skin softer or their hair shinier. They used what they already had because they knew it would work.

Here are four foods that have surprising beauty uses you may want to try.

Mayonnaise can be used to make your hair soft and shiny. Mayonnaise is basically eggs and vinegar, both of which are good for your hair and skin. By applying mayonnaise (not salad dressing) to your hair after washing it, your hair will become softer, more manageable and shinier. Start by shampooing as normal, and then when you’re done, apply mayonnaise from the roots to the end of your hair. Leave it on your hair for one minute, rinse completely, and dry as normal.

Avocados are not only delicious, but they are also loaded with healthy fats! Use as a facial mask to improve your skin. Here are simple directions you can follow to make your own avocado face mask. You can also use the same mixture to deep condition your hair. Just make sure you rinse it out completely after using it.

Baking soda has many uses beyond baking, so you probably have a box or two in the cupboard already. But, did you know that you can use baking soda as a dry shampoo? You really can. Just mix baking soda with cornstarch and work through your hair. Note that this works best if you have light colored hair. If you have darker hair, you may want to add a bit of cocoa powder to darken the tone a bit.

Coconut oil is another food that has many uses other than eating. I use it to create a homemade body scrub with granulated sugar. You can also use it straight from the jar to remove your makeup. And, you can also use it as an occasional deep conditioning hair mask. Don’t use too much or it will weigh your hair down! You may want to keep a jar of coconut oil in your beauty stash and another in the kitchen just in case.
