We are at home. We are getting stir crazy. We need additional science projects for our kiddos. Now is not the time to cut your bangs.
Now is not the time to cut yourself some bangs.
It is time to get creative, use some items you have on hand, and take care of your hair. We may not have the option for a salon deep conditioning but you can still fix your locks or scalp during this time at home. Dig through the fridge, pantry, and cabinets, reserve some time at the bathroom sink, and get to fixing those flakes, frizz, and more. Let’s look on the bright side of quarantine and achieve some hair self-care.
One of the benefits of working from home means we are doing less to our hair. The daily stress we inflict on our layers with blow-drying, straightening, curling, and all that heat creates a dull look. Unlock the natural shine in your hair by hydrating it with some healthy fats like avocado, argan or olive oil. The fatty acids act as a humectant and add moisture to the hair. Note: For fine hair use argan oil, it is lighter. Coarse or thick and color-treated hair sees better results with olive oil.
Ingredients: 1 ripe avocado, 1 tbsp of honey (raw preferably), 1/8 cup of coconut or almond milk, 1 tbsp. of argan or olive oil.
Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. No clumps! Smooth the mixture through dry hair starting at the roots and work to the tips. Wrap your hair in a towel and leave on for about 30 minutes. Shampoo the mixture out thoroughly and condition as usual.
Do tresses look stressed? Simply mix together equal parts apple cider vinegar (ACV), honey, and coconut oil and apply to your hair from root to tip. Leave on for 20 minutes and then wash and condition as usual. Dullness is banished!
Tame frizz fast by going bananas. Bananas lock in moisture and eliminate frizz. When mixed with plain yogurt, dullness, damage, and frizz are gone. Yogurt has lactic acid that adds shine, repairs, and smoothes out the hair cuticle.
Ingredients: 1 sliced banana, 2 tbsp yogurt, 1 tbsp honey.
Combine in a blender and apply the mixture to damp hair. Comb through hair and clip up. Wrap hair in a towel or shower cap and leave the mask on for 20 minutes. Wash and condition hair as usual.
When dry shampoo doesn’t help, and you need to degrease your hair, it is time for this egg whites and lemon mask.
Ingredients: 1 egg white and juice from half a lemon.
Mix ingredients together and apply to hair. Leave on for at least 45 minutes to an hour. The longer the better with this treatment. Then rinse out with warm water. Note: Do NOT use hot water to remove this mask. It will cook the egg whites into your hair. I speak from experience on this one!
No one wants a dry, itchy scalp, especially one that is noticeable from a Zoom meeting. Say goodbye to dandruff when you use tea tree oil (antibacterial and antifungal) with salicylic acid-filled aspirin and apple cider vinegar (ACV) which disrupts the growth of flake causing yeast.
Ingredients: ¼ cup water, 6-8 drops of tea tree oil, ¼ cup apple cider vinegar, 1 aspirin.
Mix the water and ACV in a clean spray bottle. Add the drops of tea tree oil and swirl together. Crush the aspirin and pour it into the spray bottle and mix until dissolved. Spray onto your scalp until it is saturated. Let it sit for 30 minutes before shampooing and conditioning as usual.
