Summer is full of fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and fresh skin. Let’s take those fresh items, like tomatoes, and make use of them in a different way. Instead of taking the overabundance of tomatoes from your garden and passing them off to friends and neighbors or making another pot of sauce; create your own beauty routine. It’s easier than you think!

Totally Toned Tomatoes

Tomatoes aren’t just good to eat – they also can help your skin maintain a youthful glow. The acids from the tomato juice make an excellent facial toner, masks, and even scrub. While there are a lot of tomato-based products in stores you can make many on your own and save money.

Ingredients: 3-4 cucumber slices (no skin), 2 slices of fresh tomato.

Mash the cucumber and tomato together. Strain the juice from the pulpy mixture into a separate container. This is your toner, which works great on reducing excess facial oil. Apply the tomato-cucumber juice mixture with a cotton ball or pad to your face.

Clean It Up

Make use of the lycopene in the tomato and reduce redness and rejuvenate skin while cleansing with this facial cleanser.

Ingredients: medium tomato, 2 tbsp. baking soda

Take a washed and de-stemmed tomato and puree it in a food processor or blender until completely pureed. Pour the tomato puree into a bowl and mix in the baking soda. Mixture will foam up slightly. Gently massage the tomato cleanser onto wet skin. Rinse off with water. Remember that this is a fresh cleanser so it only lasts about two days before you need to make more.

Scrub & Shine

There are lots of DIY recipes for tomato facial scrubs. I like to keep things simple and this one uses only two easily found at-home ingredients. It helps show off your best face. The Vitamin C in a tomato can help with acne while removing dead skin cells too.

Ingredients: ½ of 1 tomato, ½-1 tbsp. sugar.

Hold the tomato half with the sliced side facing up. Sprinkle sugar onto the half. In a circular motion, gently rub the tomato half onto your face. Do this until the sugar dissolves completely. Rinse off with warm water when done.

Mashed Mask

Tame redness with a ripe, red and juicy tomato! That applies to sunburns too. If you had too much time in the sun, then use a tomato to calm skin down and have it feeling new again.

Ingredients: 1 tomato, 1-2 tbsps. plain yogurt.

Mash the tomato up by hand or puree it in a blender or food processor. Add yogurt to the tomato puree. Apply the mask onto a clean, dry face and neck. Let the mask sit for 15-20 minutes. Wash off with water and dry. Don’t forget to moisturize as the sun can dry out your skin.
