Cold and flu season will be here again before you know it. If you have kids in school, commute to work, or/and work around a lot of people, you’re probably looking for ways to boost your immune system. There are no guarantees when it comes to staying healthy, but there are simple steps you can take to help you ward off common seasonal illnesses.

Getting the full recommended eight hours of sleep each night is a challenge for most adults. Between stress, children, and insomnia, many adults get far less sleep than their bodies need to stay healthy. To make it more likely that you’ll get a good night’s rest, attempt to go to bed and wake at the same time each day. Stop consuming caffeinated beverages in the late morning or early afternoon. Turn off the TV and eliminate other types of technology before bedtime. Try a cup of chamomile tea and a lavender linen spray at bedtime to help your body relax and unwind.

Stop Germs

It’s impossible to eliminate germs from your environment entirely, but there are ways to slow them down and help your body ward off their ill effects. Wash your hands frequently when you’re out in public, and keep your hands away from your face. If you sneeze, sneeze into your bent arm rather than your hands so you’ll be less likely to spread germs. Many commercial hand sanitizers are loaded with harsh chemicals that eliminate good bacteria as well as bad, so look for brands that contain natural ingredients, like tea tree oil.

Maintaining a healthy weight and getting enough exercise are important elements of a healthy lifestyle, and will help your immune system stay strong. If you’re not used to exercising, start with an easy walk around your neighborhood. Even activities like throwing a ball with the kids or walking the dog count are beneficial.  Just be sure to get up and move!
