The brisk cold of winter may leave us feeling chilled but instead of turning to basic black to get through another frigid season, it’s time to look to another chic color, navy. Navy blue is a classic color that looks fresh all year round. It works for all occasions and can be dressed up or down. Here are some old and new ways to do the blue!

The Basics

Why give navy a try, especially after such a nautical-themed spring and summer? It’s simple. Navy blue never goes out of style. It looks great on all skin tones and hair colors. The color navy can make the whites of your eyes look whiter. Your navy blazer can be worn all year layered over fall and winter looks.  A navy jumpsuit is a modern twist that works well for a nighttime event. Remember that navy needs dimension and depth. Try finding a fabric that has some embellishment, sequins or shine to it to dress it up and lose the stuffiness the color can sometimes give off.

Don’t forget that you can always mix and match navy with black. A navy peacoat or trench coat worn with dark rinse jeans, black shoes and a black purse work quite well any day of the week.

Swap out that old LBD and wear a little navy dress instead.  A simple sheath works well for the office during the day. The addition of a statement or bib necklace, or a chunky jeweled bracelet, adds glamour for a round of holiday parties that always has you looking stylish. Want more glitz to go with that staid navy? Find a navy dress embellished in sequins, brocade fabric or leather panels for a look that is both full of life and less harsh than its dark counterpart, black.

Navy Hues

Put aside that black eyeliner and trade it in for something a bit more modern. Day or night, dark navy eyeliner can brighten the whites of your eyes and add a subtle change to your daily make-up routine that will create stunning results. Navy blue mascara instead of a black one creates the same effects. Keep this tip in mind when you are going through your round of late nights and holiday festivities.

Dip the tips of your nails into something new. Stash away your dark reds, deep plums and metallic color nail lacquers for the dark blue of navy.  With high-gloss shine and still allowing for that on-trend dark manicured look this color is hot season after season. A great one is Essie ‘Mind Your Mittens’ and ‘After School Boy Blazer’ offer sleek coverage that lasts days.
