February 20, 2018

In February, most people focus on Valentine’s day and love, hearts, and candy. If you’re coupled up, it’s a single day that will come and go. If you’re not in a relationship, it can feel a little lonely. That’s why it’s a good idea to make the entire month of February about loving yourself—starting right now. Interested? Here are some tips!

Me Time

Creating “Me Time” is an important way to incorporate self-care into your daily routine. It’s not always easy, but it’s entirely worth it.

You may have to be aggressive about scheduling this time, since most of us are so busy these days.  Pick a time that works for you and, even if it’s just 15-30 minutes,  make sure everyone knows that, barring an emergency, you need to be left alone. Do not feel guilty. Every person deserves and needs a breather. Take yours.

Eat Healthier

Even if it’s just for the month, make a commitment to nourish your body in a healthier way. The changes you make will largely depend on what you’re currently eating. Chances are, you already know where you need to improve.

Wake up in enough time to eat breakfast at home. Pack a lunch instead of hitting the fast-food joint. Stick to a meal plan for dinner so you’re not ordering pizza. It might be more effort but you will feel a lot better in the long run.

Move That Body

If you’ve got a gym membership but your gear is collecting dust, it’s time to lace up those shoes and get back to it. If you don’t have a gym membership, you can still get your body moving.

Take walks (even if it’s cold—just bundle up!), do yoga, or download an app so you can workout from home. Technology makes it possible to get a good workout just about anywhere. Don’t have weights? Use food canned! Get creative and have some fun (a nightly dance party totally counts!)

How many of us have heard about we should drink 6 to 8 glasses a day (minimum) and still manage to consume way less than that? We’ve only got one body so we need to take care of it! If you have trouble making yourself drink enough water, consider downloading one of the many aps that remind you throughout the day to have another drink.

Get Positive

All day every day, there are little things that chip away at our confidence. It may be a rude remark or an unfriendly encounter that makes us feel badly, but it’s often our own inner voices that tell us how  unworthy we are.

For the rest of the month, write down something every day that you’ve done well. Put it in a journal or on a small piece of paper that you collect in a jar. When you’re feeling down, refer to your list or pick a note out of the jar. Let the positive messages drown out all of the negativity, even if it’s just for a little while. It will feel amazing!

When this time of year rolls around, instead of thinking only about romantic gestures, chocolates, and relationships, think about how you will spend the month loving yourself. Try your best to carry this forward throughout the year. You deserve to be loved just as much as anyone else, and if you don’t do it, who will?
