My husband has been pestering me lately to make him cookies.  I don’t tend to do a lot of baking since I follow the Paleo diet.  I find a big pile of cookies to be a bit of a temptation some days.  The kids and my husband don’t follow the Paleo diet so they do enjoy the occasional cookie.  It’s easier for me to make my own cookies than to try to find cookies without added preservatives in the grocery store.  This healthy oatmeal chocolate chip cookie recipe is one of our favorites because it is simple to make and absolutely delicious.

Healthy Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

The key to making the healthiest food possible is to be aware of the ingredients you’re using when you make it. I try to start out with organic and all natural ingredients in all of my recipes. That way I can be sure that the food I am serving my family doesn’t contain artificial preservatives, sweeteners or colors.  I prefer to start with local organic ingredients which I get at our local food co-op. When I cannot find local organic ingredients, I will look for organic or all natural ingredients from elsewhere in the United States. Ingredients

  • 1 cup organic sugar (I also look for fair trade)
  • 1 1/2 cups extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 farm fresh eggs
  • 2 cups rolled oats (not instant)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (not flavoring)
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 tsp aluminum free baking powder
  • 2 cups dark chocolate chips (organic & fair trade)


  • Preheat the oven to 350F. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  • Mix the sugar, olive oil, eggs and vanilla in a large bowl.
  • Add oatmeal, flour, baking powder, and chocolate chips. Mix until well combined.
  • Using a cookie scoop, place batter on parchment paper, separating 3 across and 4 rows.
  • Flatten slightly with a fork.
  • Bake 12-14 minutes. Remove from oven and cool for 2 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

This recipe makes about 2 1/2 dozen cookies. You can easily double or triple the recipe if your family goes through a lot of cookies.  Cookies can be frozen between sheets of parchment paper in the freezer for up to a month once they have completely cooled.  Freezing some for future use is a great way to have home-baked, healthy treats even when you are very busy. This recipe can be changed depending on your family’s preferences.  You can use raisins, nuts, or dried cranberries instead of the dark chocolate chips if you prefer.
