My BFF since preschool, now a personal trainer and nutritionist, has long expounded on the healing powers of the spice Turmeric. Known for its anti-inflammatory properties she has put it into drinks, my morning eggs, soups and other dishes all to help reduce post-gym aches and pains and even reduce the inflammation in breast tissue each month. And you know what? When I do it regularly it actually works! I’m not saying you have to add turmeric to every food, a little goes a long way, but keeping it in rotation within your daily intake will definitely have its benefits.

Did You Know?

Turmeric, the spice that gives curry its yellow color, is filled with anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Why is this important? Turmeric reduces inflammation in joints, tissues and muscles in our body which when sore and in pain are less effective in fighting off the invasion of germs and diseases. Taking a daily dose of turmeric extract when training – or daily – can actively help you recuperate at a quicker pace and fight off future illnesses. That includes fighting aging and free radicals that damage the skin. Turmeric repairs and helps with cell turn over to combat the signs of aging.

Here’s How

True, you could just eat a lot of curry dishes or take a daily capsule loaded with turmeric extract but that isn’t always the way to go. A combination of adding it to your weekly diet and skincare routine can be just as effective and more fun.

Try Tea: Perfect for these cold days. Make a cup of warm tea.

Ingredients: 1 cup coconut milk, 1 cup water, 1 tbsp. turmeric (powder or grated root works), 1 tbsp. ghee, 1 tbsp. honey.

Mix the coconut milk and water together in a saucepan and heat through. Add the ghee, honey and turmeric and heat for another 2-5 minutes until hot and well combined. Pour into glasses and serve hot.

Mix up a Mask: A weekend facial with turmeric can fight off the effects of a long work week. This one reduces the appearance of dull skin, which contributes to looking older.

Ingredients: ½ tsp. of turmeric powder, 1 tsp. rose water, 1 tsp. baking soda.

Mix all the ingredients together. Apply the paste to your face and neck area. Wait for five minutes and massage the mixture into the skin with wet fingertips. Do this for 5 minutes then wash off the mask with cold water. The mask works by exfoliating your skin and removing dead skin cells and hidden dirt. Blackheads and whiteheads will also diminish after using this mask on a regular basis. Skin will look fresh and glowing too.
