Foods that Boost Brain Power

Eating well is important for both your physical health and your mental health. “Garbage in. Garbage out.” was one of my father’s favorite sayings when I was growing up. Your brain needs healthy food just as much as your muscles or lungs do.  Do you know the foods that boost brain power?

Foods that Boost Brain Power

  • Whole Grains: In order to focus and concentrate, your brain needs energy. This energy comes from glucose or sugar in your blood system. Carbohydrates are a source of glucose and whole grains release glucose into your system slowly which means you’ll be more alert all day rather than just in a short burst after processed foods.
  • Fish: This is one of my favorite foods that boost brain power because there is such a variety to choose from. Your body cannot produce essential fatty acids so you need to get them from foods you eat. Fish like salmon, trout, mackerel, herring, sardines, pilchards and kippers are the perfect choice.
  • Blueberries and Black Currants: Studies have been done recently that suggest that blueberries may help with short-term memory loss. Since these are very easily grown in my area, I try to eat these regularly when they are in season. Black currants are also known to help with brain power so if you enjoy berries, you may want to look for these the next time you shop.
  • Broccoli: This green veggie is a good source of Vitamin K which is known to help improve cognitive ability. Why not try it in a salad with pumpkin seeds on top. Pumpkin seeds are loaded with zinc which helps with memory.
  • Vitamin E: Foods containing this vitamin may help prevent the decline of cognitive ability especially in the elderly. Good sources of Vitamin E include nuts, asparagus, olives, eggs, brown rice, whole grains and green leafy vegetables.  With spring right around the corner, asparagus and green leafy vegetables will soon be available at local farmer’s markets.

Eating a healthy diet is very important if you want your body to function properly. Research is still being done on memory loss and new information is found regularly. These foods that boost brain power are a great place to start when you are looking for healthy lifestyle changes. If you aren’t sure that you get enough of these foods in your diet, you can always add in a daily multi-vitamin and omega 3 supplement to be certain.
