The new year is the time to start making goals and many of us make a resolution surrounding fitness and getting healthy. Year after year we say, “I’m going to lose 20 pounds this year and start working out.”

Then reality sets in and we start to question how we’re going to accomplish that goal.  If you are anything like me, and have little time, the excuses start. I don’t want to join a gym. It’s too cold outside to start running. I can’t possibly wake up any earlier in the morning. I can’t be away from the kids. I’m not sure how to use any of the equipment.

The excuses can be paralyzing, to the point that February and March hit and you’re no closer to your goal than the previous year.

So this month, let’s squash the excuses and look at fitness a little differently. Let’s find a way to work out at home and incorporate our children into our exercise goals.

I would guess a huge percentage of us parents have some sort of game consol (Xbox 360 Kinect, Wii, or Play Station 3) at home. Maybe your kids play on it. Maybe you’ve dabbled in a few of the games or have a favorite of your own. But have you seen all the fitness video games there are for these devices? Whether you want to exercise, dance, play yoga, or pick up a sport – you can find a game for that. Buy them new or used, rent them, or borrow them. Just try one out today.

Here some personal favorites of mine:

It’s important to us as parents to make sure we spend time with our kids, and take care of their well being. This truly is a fantastic way to do both, and take a little time for ourselves. You will see a difference just by taking 20 minutes a day to incorporate a workout routine, along with a laugh and smile or two from the kids. Come on Mom’s and Dad’s we are worth it.

The better fit we are physically and mentally the better we are well rounded people and parents.

With so many choices available to help you get back in shape, or start a new routine, why not get started today? Grab your children and their remotes and get active.
