Halloween Shopping at the Thrift Store
October 24, 2012
With Halloween right around the corner, you may still be on the lookout for that perfect Halloween costume or decorations for your upcoming party. Sometimes it’s easy to hop online or run to the department store – but have you considered stopping by your local Goodwill or thrift store? You’re likely to find great buys on both costumes and party decor.
Buying new is something many of us are suckered into doing for Halloween. Whether it is the bags of fake spider web, a new plastic Halloween costume, plastic pumpkin Halloween buckets, or orange and black streamers, there are Halloween decorations and costumes lining the aisles of pretty much every store you enter. But buying used is ideal for Halloween. Trust me, two-year old Halloween decorations with the look of a little wear to them can be all the more festive. Halloween is a time to be “spooky” so adding some age to your décor can give it some extra pizzazz.
The best part about purchasing used decorations is that you won’t be contributing to the after Halloween trash flow. Even if you reuse new decorations over and over again (which is far better than using and tossing) you still have lots of packaging to throw away. If you purchase used there is no extra packaging and you can use the decorations year after year until they have run out of life.
Here are some things you can expect to find relatively easily at your local thrift store for the Halloween season:
- Halloween costumes– The aisles will be lined with Halloween costumes that typically were only worn once. You can even make your own custom costume with some thrift store finds. From cowboy get-up to real nursing scrubs, you can find great items even outside of the costume aisle.
- Party Decoration– You will find used Halloween lights, pumpkins, decorative witches, cob webs, and more. Most thrift stores have a section dedicated to the local holiday décor offerings.
- Yard Supplies– Do you want to give your yard a little sprucing up for your trick-or-treaters? You can find fake tombstones, mummies, scarecrows, and more. These items are typically deeply discounted and still in fantastic shape.
- Flatware and utensils– Halloween serving platters, plates, and mugs sometimes can be found in the thrift store as well. Instead of purchasing disposable plates or cups, check out the thrift store shelf for reusable decorative flatware.
These are just a few of the things you can find at your local thrift store. Have you hit up your local thrift store for Halloween shopping yet?
