Now that the holidays are over, you might be wondering the best way to handle all of the leftover food. While we always send guests home with leftovers, it seems like we have far more food than we can ever eat ourselves. We definitely don’t want it to go to waste, but thankfully most leftovers can be frozen to use in the future.

If you find yourself with leftover Christmas cookies, you may want to consider freezing them so you can enjoy them in the future. As much as I love Christmas cookies, I don’t need to be tempted by them for the entire month of December. If I see them in the cookie jar, I am going to have “just one more” far more often than I should. So, the solution is to freeze them. Out of sight. Out of mind.

If you’d like to get started freezing your leftover Christmas cookies, it’s important to keep a few things in mind. You want the cookies to remain whole and taste amazing when you finally do decide to eat them.

  • If you want to freeze plain, unfrosted cookies, it’s very simple. Freeze them in freezer containers. Separate each layer with a layer of parchment paper or wax paper. This will ensure that the cookies don’t get stuck together when you want to eat them.
  • If you plan on freezing a frosted cookie like a gingerbread cookie or a sugar cookie, you need to use a different method. If you pile them on top of each other, the frosting will cause them to stick together. Instead, lay them flat on a cookie sheet and place in the freezer until they are frozen. Then, you can store them in layers separated by wax paper or parchment paper like a plain cookie.
  • If you have a very delicate cookie that you don’t want to break, wrap each layer separately in plastic wrap before placing in a freezer container. Also, be sure that you place the container in an area of the freezer where the cookies won’t be jostled or broken. And don’t place anything heavy on top of the container!
  • Make sure that when you freeze your cookies, you clearly label each container. You don’t want to have to guess if you’re taking out leftover meatloaf or your favorite sugar cookies.
  • To thaw frozen cookies, take them out of the freezer container and place them on a cookie rack for 15 minutes to allow them to come to room temperature. If you want, you can refresh them in the oven at 325F for 5 to 10 minutes.
