Are you wondering how to celebrate Christmas virtually? Whether you can’t visit relatives who are far away or you are choosing to socially distance, here are a few simple tips to help you enjoy the holidays at home this year.

Host a Zoom Call

Get everyone together for a few minutes before or after the big holiday meal for a Zoom call. You can gather for prayers before dinner. Or, you can get together for dessert and chat while you enjoy a piece of your favorite pie. Just load up Zoom on your computers, tablets, or smartphones and it couldn’t be easier.

Use a Facebook Room

If everyone you want to chat with uses Facebook, you can create a room and visit there. This is an easy way for people to visit informally as they have time throughout the day. Just create the room and leave it open. People can enter as they have time and visit with those that are there. This is perfect for people with large extended families. Pick a set time for everyone to attend while you open gifts.

Do a Drive-By

If your family lives in the same general area, you can easily do a drive-by Christmas. Just put banners and balloons on the car and set a time for everyone to look out their windows. Drive from home to home waving and honking your horn to wish them a happy holiday.

Send a Care Package

If you worry that some of your relatives may not be up to creating the Christmas meal on their own, why not send a care package? You can make a loaf of your favorite fruitcake and add a few packages of hot chocolate. Or, you can arrange for Instacart to deliver all the fixings for their dinner. You can spend as much or as little as you want to with this idea.

Plan Shared Experiences

You don’t physically have to visit everyone to feel a connection during the holidays. Plan experiences that everyone can do at the same time. This might include starting dinner at the same time, lighting the same scented candle at the same time, or even watching the same television program in your own homes. While it’s not the same as being together, it can give you a common bond to share.

Connect by Phone

Many older relatives aren’t interested in the latest social media or computer technology. If you have older parents who don’t feel comfortable with a zoom call or Facebook, why not give them a call? Put the call on speakerphone and prepare your meals together while you chat. It’s not the same as seeing each other. But, it can help to bridge the distance.

Sharing is caring!
