Congratulations to Sophie’s World: the SocialMoms Blog of the Week!

Sophie’s World is the digital home of Sophie Maletsky, renowned California Bay Area childrens entertainer and event planner. In Sophie’s World, every care provider can entertain and be entertained by their children through simple and usable crafts, games, learning tools, and activities suitable for all ages, situations, and surroundings. I recently chatted with Sophie about her site and blog:

SM: What was your inspiration for starting your site?

I’ve been in the business for over 17 years now and I’ve learned so much about so many things. Kids inspire and teach me daily, and I wanted to have a place where I could share all this accumulated stuff. My assistant Simone is the one who turned me onto blogging. I was a bit shy at first…I wasn’t sure anyone would really care about what I had to say … but then I sort of got over myself and said, “hey, there’s a lot of little pointers that I’ve learned from the kids, the parties, and the parents … why not share them”.

SM: What has most surprised you about running the site?

How I can’t really do it alone. If I didn’t have Simone I’d probably end up posting my drafts into the ethernet. I’m not the most tech savy individual in the world. The thing is, I’ve been doing so much of what I do on my own for soooo long … so to have someone to help me … to actually work with me … that was a big change. It’s a good thing … but it’s also an interesting thing … relinquishing power.

SM: What are you most passionate about?

I love challenging kids and adults to get creative together. I’m really lucky and blessed that I have an amazing program that I run through the public library system of San Francisco. It’s an art program for kids and caregivers and it’s unbelievable. People come in saying – “oh, I’m just here to bring my kid … I’m not creative” and then you watch them realize that they have “permission” to get creative too, and they just go wild. It’s so cool to see. Kids and adults working side by side…laughing, sharing, enjoying each other’s company…it’s the best thing in the world. So I guess I’m passionate about creativity, connectivity, sharing, laughter, and libraries! I love libraries!

SM: What is the most popular section of your site?

Hmmm … I think the party ideas … and the how to’s. I wish I had more time … I’d write up dozens of parties….

SM: What is your favorite part of blogging?

Writing and speaking in my own voice. I don’t feel like I have to pretend to be something I’m not … I just write about what I know, what I like, what I feel is important. It’s fun to find out that there are people out there that feel the same way. I like the dialogue that comes through our site … I like connecting and sharing with other people … that sense of community.

Sharing is caring!
