Finding breakfast smoothies that are dairy free can be a challenge for some people. Since my daughter is lactose intolerant, we try to avoid dairy-based foods in the things we prepare for her. Since many breakfast smoothies use yogurt or Greek yogurt as a base, we have been searching for an alternative to use when we make smoothies.

One of the reasons we make smoothies for breakfast is because they are portable. It’s easy to prepare the ingredients the night before. Then, right before we head out in the morning, we throw everything in the smoothie blender and blend.

Then, it’s simply a matter of pouring it into a to-go blender cup and heading out the door.  The cup fits in the cup holder in our car and we can enjoy on the road or take it to the office. There’s no mess, crumbs, or need to heat anything up when we get where we’re going.

Banana Berry Breakfast Smoothie

  • 2 cups of frozen berries
  • 1 medium frozen banana
  • 1 cup almond milk (chilled)
  • 1 cup ice

Add everything to the blender and blend on high until it is smooth. Enjoy! You can use your favorite mixed berries in this recipe. We love blueberries and strawberries in ours. We use unsweetened almond milk, but, if you prefer sweeter smoothies, you can use vanilla flavored or sweetened almond milk instead.

Banana and Cocoa Morning Smoothie

  • 1 cup water or cold coffee
  • 1 small frozen banana
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup ice cubes

Add all of the ingredients to your blender and blend on high until everything is well blended and smooth. Enjoy! This is a great pick me up in the morning if you use cold coffee or cold espresso. Or, if you want it with no caffeine for yourself or the kids, you can use plain water instead. It won’t have a caffeine kick but it is still delicious.

Healthy Green Smoothie

  • 1 handful of fresh baby spinach leaves
  • 1 cup of cold water
  • 1 to 2 cups of frozen mango or frozen banana or a combination of both

Blend the fresh baby spinach leaves and the cold water in the blender until any chunks are gone. Remove any stems if necessary. Add the frozen mango or banana and continue to blend until smooth and thick. Enjoy! If you want, you can substitute kale for all or some of the spinach leaves when you make this.
