Farmer’s Markets in the Fall

Farmer’s markets are the absolute easiest way to eat locally grown food. You know where the food comes from and many times get to meet the farmers face-to-face. Farmer’s markets are a great way to eat healthier and support your local community at the same time.
The key to farmer’s markets is to know what is in season. What can you expect to find at your local farmer’s market this fall? Here is a quick list of the most prominent fall fruits and veggies for your favorite fall recipe.
Apples
I know what you are thinking, “Apples are harvested year round, right?” WRONG! When we started importing so many apples , many people forgot they actually have a season. Apples, in the Northern Hemisphere, are harvested from late summer through fall. So if you have a hankering for some home-made apple pie, head over to your local farmer’s market for some tasty, locally grown apples. Depending on your region and the number of farmer’s in your area you may be able to get a variety of apples.
Leafy Greens
There are numerous different leafy greens in season for fall. If you want fresh salads that are locally harvested, fall is your time of year. Here is a list of in season leafy greens.
- Arugula
- Cabbage
- Chard
- Kale
- Lettuce
- Spinach
Garlic
For those Italian food lovers out there, garlic is at its best late summer and throughout fall. Locally grown garlic that is harvested in this timeframe is the best garlic out there. You will find it fuller and sweeter.
Onions
A variety of onions are harvested during the fall months. You should be able to find any variety of onions at your local market including scallions.
Squash
Many of us associate the fall season with squash and for good reason. Squash is at its best during the fall months.
Pumpkins
