I love lobster and crab cakes but the expense of using the real thing is just out of my budget. If you’re looking for an easy, affordable meal idea, you can make these easy imitation lobster cakes just as easily at a fraction of the cost.

When you purchase imitation crab or lobster at the store, what you’re usually buying is a mixture of Alaska pollock with a bit of lobster or crab added in. To me, it tastes pretty close to the real thing, especially when you are making a recipe like lobster bisque or these imitation lobster cakes. It’s an inexpensive, pre-packaged, and pre-cooked option that works for a variety of different dishes.

Imitation Lobster Cakes Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 package of imitation lobster or crab (fully cooked) 8 oz
  • 3/4 cup of seasoned Italian breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 finely chopped white onion
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • Basil and parsley, dried, to taste
  • 1/2 stick of butter (not margarine)

Directions to make the imitation lobster cakes

  1. Finely chop the imitation lobster or crab.
  2. Mix the seasoned Italian breadcrumbs, finely chopped imitation lobster, white onion, milk, egg and dried seasonings in a bowl until well blended.
  3. Melt the butter in a large frying pan.
  4. Form patties, about the size of your palm, of the mixture.
  5. Fry over medium heat until lightly brown on one side. Watch carefully, these will burn easily.
  6. Flip and fry until the other side is done as well.

Serving Suggestions

Because the imitation lobster cakes are made with breadcrumbs, you don’t need another starchy side dish like potatoes, rolls or rice. Instead, serve them with your favorite steamed vegetable or a fresh garden salad. Of course, you’ll want to have a fresh lemon to squeeze over the lobster cakes when you serve them.

You can easily use other types of seafood in this recipe depending on what you have on hand. It works just as well with imitation crab meat, canned tuna, or canned salmon. Or, if you have real lobster or crab you can certainly use that as well.

What’s your favorite way to use imitation lobster or crab?
