In the summer, the warm temps and humid air keep our skin looking dewy and feeling supple but the cold of winter isn’t quite the same. Not only might your skin take on that signature ashen hue associated with the season, but it may also crack and peel.

Is there anything you can do to turn things around in time for spring? Fortunately, yes.

Hydrate

One of the most important things you can do for your body is to drink enough water. Your organs function optimally when you are properly hydrated so sipping on this restorative drink throughout the day has many, many benefits.

If your tongue is feeling dry, there’s a good chance your lips are already chapped. Increase your intake for a few days and see if that makes a difference (spoiler: it should!)

Humidify

Your skin is drier in the winter due to a lack of moisture in the air. Turning the heat up to stay warm only addresses one of those problems.

Consider adding a few humidifiers throughout your home and see if that makes a difference. This is also good for your nasal passages since they are affected by dry conditions too.

Moisturize

Don’t be afraid to slather on that body and facial lotion when you notice your skin looking a little worse for wear. Be sure to pick up some smaller, portable sizes to carry in your purse or packet and stash some in your car and at work.

Also, consider Vaseline. It’s thick and goopy but it can do wonders for your skin. Spread some on your weary, cracking feet at bedtime and then wear a pair of socks overnight. You should wake up with healthier looking toes!

Exfoliate

Shedding that top layer of dry, dead skin will help things considerably. Don’t overdo it since this can irritate your skin further, but a nice gentle scrub, or even a washcloth, can do the trick.

Once you slough off the driest skin, go ahead and double down on your moisturizing efforts. Without that barrier, your efforts may be more effective.

Avoid Hot Showers

When it’s cold outside, you might be tempted to take a hot shower to warm up, but this might have a negative effect on your skin. Heat actually breaks down our skin’s natural barrier.

Try to keep the temperature of the water around 84 degrees and avoid staying in the shower longer than ten minutes. This should help your skin retain those precious, protective essential oils.

We all know that our skin may lack its usual lustre during wintertime but that doesn’t mean we have to accept an ashen complexion. Try these five simple strategies and you could find yourself looking vibrant and refreshed in no time!
